ada205mi what killed group b was spectators. its possible to get a lot of power from a lot of engines but only for short periods before they give up. we know peugeot and audi could make more power than the rally cars did, from pikes peak and rallycross. but they are only doing it for short periods of time. in rallying that is not a viable strategy. as there are many, often long stages over several days, and they can't rebuild the engine 3 or 4 times per event with limited service times, its not f1.

Many people aren't aware of how much power Group B cars were making and are quoting "official" figures that the factory claimed. In the case of the Lancia S4, it had around 470 HP when they first raced it and in the last rally, Olympus Rally of 1986 they ran ~720-730 HP on the final engine evolution (+some overboost being used, they ran different boost pressure according to road conditions etc.) The source of this information? Markku Alen who won that rally in the S4.
