hi there thanks for this guide! I'm having some trouble with "7z x SIM7600X-4G-HAT-Demo.7z -r -o/home/pi" it says "Can not create output directory: /home/pi/" Any ideas? thanks!
I purchased a Waveshare SIM7080G Cat-M/NB-IoT HAT for a project, but I'm no programmer. The project involves sending an SMS message via 4G IoT (NB-IoT) upon a triggering event. Do you know if there are similar scripts available which are specific to the SIM7080G Hat, which might get me started?
What if I want to provide internet to the raspberry Pi zero which is sitting inside my drone. Video is the only way of doing it or any cheap solution is available??
I've been looking for a way to set up a pi at a hunting club hooked up to cameras and the internet so I can see deer activity. I've got a pi zero w 2 I'm planning on using for the project. The hardest part will be getting a reasonable price for service.
Not quite sure what you mean but this is a guide on how to run this HAT as a hotspot which may be what your looking for - www.twilio.com/docs/iot/supersim/getting-started-super-sim-raspberry-pi-waveshare-4g-hat
@@Core-Electronics Thank you. Also do you have any source/link to know the process of SIM7600G module bring up with Arduino? If you have any plans you can do a video as well.
@Core Electronics I noticed you said you needed a usb mic to make calls and to use the headphones for the hearing.. Is this correct? Isn't the jack in for both audio and mic? Can the mic of the raspberry pi via usb be accessed by the hat without using the 3.55mm jack?
One issue. I'm using this with only 4G and of course since there is no real time clock on the pi it has no idea what time it is when not connected to a network. And of course that matters for running cron scripts to send GPS coordinates. I guess what I need is internet access but my SIM has almost no data. Need to set time over 4G or GPS and then kill the internet once time is set.
Looks like another fellow has run into this issue too. He created a script that fixes the system time based on the GPS location of the device. I reckon that is right up your alley with your current hardware - wb4son.com/wpblog/?p=1635 You also have the option to include a RTC to your system. Something like this would be a plug in solution to getting accurate timing - core-electronics.com.au/catalog/product/view/sku/DFR0386
@@Core-Electronics Thanks. Looks like on my install the GPS outputs NMEA data on ttyUSB1. Installing gpsd and then grabbing the output causes the SMS GPS script to fail. I guess there is a serial port issue there. I have a couple of options. My only goal is to track my camper if stolen. I can attach a second USB GPS (I have many of them) and then run that script. There is bound to be a way to do it with one GPS but I can't figure it out. Also I keep the power off in the camper via a battery switch. Ideally I want to boot the Pi when the thief powers up the camper for the first time but it seems like by then the Pi won't know the date much less the time. Real Time Clock sounds great but really no less trouble hanging another GPS off the Pi on another serial port.
Cool, functional and easy to install/use but a 80 euro price tag for allegedly 35 euro board.... At this point just getting a router with a sim slot from a local provider is easier and bypasses all possible region specific problems in terms of setup.
The existence of this might not impress you then - core-electronics.com.au/catalog/product/view/sku/CE08606 Truthfully for me this gear is about getting into the weeds and figuring out how all the connectivity methods blend together in our modern world. That and you can great some pretty amazing projects with an un-comparable level of control.
@@Core-Electronics It doesn't surprise me that it exists. As the people around here like to say, there are passengers for every train. As for "getting into the weeds", focusing on the cheaper stuff (for example I'm looking at a SIM800L GSM GPRS module for 6 euro in a local site) is better idea IMO since, even if its more soft and hardware limited than the featured one here, its affordable for more people. I know that it won't make a very interesting video for the "tech enthusiasts" but how many ppl that watched this would spend 80 vs 6 euro to try it for themself? That is the main problem in the "hobby electronic" market also - making a small run product, focused for the few instead of the many, and keeping the price up since selling little means u gotta cover expenses and make profit fast - the fact that the chip on this hat retails for 38eu means the whole thing cant cost more than 40,45 when mass manufactured. At least the documentation/software support here seems solid enough compared to most modern SBCs even.
hi tim, this is a great video. i am using a pi zero 2w. when i run the "chmod +x configure && ./configure && sudo make && sudo make install" i get an aclocal error which appears to stop the drivers from loading. this is on a new debian bullseye build released 6/9 - if i run the script on the existing pi, it works. i am a newbie so no idea how to overcome
Hey mate, interesting question. Allow me to break it down a little, are you using the exact same HAT in the video on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2? The Installation guide for the Pi Zero HAT Version may just come in handy if so - www.waveshare.com/wiki/SIM7600G-H_4G_HAT_(B) Also typing and entering a quick | sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade y | terminal command might just be the remedy. Great video, thanks! I have been using the module for a month and 2 days ago the NET LED started flashing. I checked what this means and found out that the module is looking for a network even though it is already connected. What is the reason for this? And how do I solve the problem?

Hello Tim. Thank you for the amazing video. I have the same hardware but instead of RaspberryPi OS I am using OpenWRT on my Raspberry Pi. Can you make a video how to access internet via GPIO pins and other features in OpenWrt. Thanks in advance.
I wonder if using this kind of setup if an older analogue car phone could be enabled to work without any physical changes, sounds like the main thing would be getting an analogue phone keypad and maybe screen to work with this setup. I have a Lexus LS400 and they came out with analogue phones in the centre console and I have the phone, it would be awesome to get it operational, not to use while driving of course. If this was possible I guess it could be integrated with a 7" screen and be usable through the screen also. it is above my neuron limits.
when the Waveshare hat is using a sim card, would it use moble data (as is it was a phone) or hotspot data, becuse some phone providers offer unlimted 4g data for 30 bux a month, but no hotspot data

Can I make a standalone portable 4G router for wifi hotspot out of it, without using the main Pi board? Will it be more efficient than those portable 4g routers?
Hiya :) Thank you for the tutorial, so helpful! Could you please a video on how to use the SIM7600E LTE Cat-1 HAT with a Raspberry Pi 4 model b as a router - or how to communicate and send data with a SIM card? Thank you in advance!
Hi Your video is quite informative. I have question related to GPS as GPS is sending Time also. I am using the same method to read time from GPS. But the time i can read from GPS is UTC 0, I have change my CLK time zone to +32 after doing that network time is ok but GPS is still send with UTC 0.
It is incredible and fascinating work with great demonstration; thanks a lot . I would like to know about SMS. Is it possible to send a message to a phone within the same network with Waveshare SIM7600 and raspberry pi by using the phone MAC ID instead of the phone number?.
Cheers for your kind words mate 😊 my understanding is that a MAC address is a low level physical address which is used for unique identity for a device. That Address will exist only for your local network/WiFi and not used for Mobile Connectivity. The web server is the easiest way to visualise information around a local network. If you want to transfer data around a local network Home Assistant is definitely a good approach. Hope this helps!
Thanks for all information , but i need help for IMEI change for my country , i will make order from abroad? I want to change my 4G gsm module's IMEI Is it possible ?

However, I am experiencing power issues when I plug in this module for longer than 30minutes? The Pi starts to overheat and hang... Any suggestions?
Very interesting, I haven't had overheating issues with my set up over here when I ran it overnight but my office is pretty cold. Have you installed heat-sinks to the Integrated Circuits on the Raspberry Pi?
Yes you should be able to do it but it all depends on the driver situation. Software like OPNSense can use a connection as a fallback, but you need BSD drivers. Hit up google regarding the + . There will be a ton of information you can uncover regarding the best approach.

Hi, great video. I have followed all the instruction the calling is working, but sending a message seems to not working, the cms error 500 is popping up. Do you know any way to fix this? Do you think because the power of the gsm module isn't enought? since sending a message requires more power and ampere. Thank you.

Great video. I'm using Hologram SIM you recommended. But it's not connecting. From articles I read makes mention about setting the "APN" but not on how to do that. So, how do you do it?
I am having this same issue, haven't been able to figure out how to send a SMS or make a phone call. Everything looks like it works it will even say that the SMS message was sent but my phone does not receive the text message of the phone call. I think it has something to so with the hologram number being an international number and then fact that I don't have a verizon international plan. But have not been able to confirm that yet. I trying sending it to my friend who uses t-mobile but they also did not receive that text even there were no errors when sending the message and hologram charged me for the text.
Hi, Great video. I would like to ask, could Pi with this 4g Hat transmit the image to my laptop (Linux)? I see it can communicate with smart phone, but not sure if it can communicate with laptop/PC and if transmit image remotely? X.
Hello, this is a super nice video. We are working on project of an Arducam 16MP with RPi. We need to send 4 or 5 times a day a picture taken by then camera to a server via HTTP POST or similar. How can I use the SIM7600G-H 4G HAT to do it? Is there any Python library to do that? The project should run remotely 24/7, we do not access the RPi and so we cannot write commands. Everything should be finally packed into a Python script that runs continuously and alone.
This HAT should be the ticket you need. You can set this HAT as a internet Hotspot for your Raspberry Pi and that will allow you to remotely connect in (SSH). The rest is just some clever Python scripts 😊 totally doable.
Hi Tim! I have a question regarding the 4G HAT - i'm currently working on a project and i cant find an answer to a question you might be able to answer Is it possible to communicate with a certain other device which supports 4G? I have a smart power meter, IoT, and its called ADW300. This device supports 4G communication, but is it possible to read data from the ADW300 with the Raspberry Pi 4B (combined with the waveshare module)? They dont need to communicate to each other, just the smart meter has to send its data to the raspi. How can they connect to each other?
Hey mate, If you are sending data you need some form of communication. Is the ADW300 able to connect to Wifi? If so you can create a Hotspot using the 4G HAT which then gets the WiFi connected to the Raspberry Pi and the ADW300. Once they are communicating on the same Wifi you will be able to create Python Scripts that pull, display and utilse the data form the Smart Meter. Hope that helps 😊, Tim
I have a relay board that my pi is plugged into and my pi gets it's power from the relay board. Is it possible to use this with a pi and relay board. The relay board does have a 40 pin connector that looks like what is on the pi.
Hi, I want to use a wifi video doorbell for a project but do not want to connect it to home wifi. I was wondering whether I can use this module with a data enabled sim card to create a wireless wifi network that the doorbell could connect to?
Most likely a Sudo permission issue, potentially due to the bcm2835 being installed via a Sudo command. Prefix those last two terminal commands with | sudo | to give you admin privileges when you run those last two terminal commands. That should fix you up.

You sure can mate, come check this comment I left at the bottom of the full write up 😊 forum.core-electronics.com.au/t/guide-by-tim-4g-and-gps-hat-for-raspberry-pi-waveshare-sim7600x/14357/13?u=tim
Awesome video. Could you please add the updates for the new PI5 setup and files? thank you!!
hi there thanks for this guide!
I'm having some trouble with "7z x SIM7600X-4G-HAT-Demo.7z -r -o/home/pi"
it says "Can not create output directory: /home/pi/"
Any ideas? thanks!
Any experience so far with a 5G hat? That would be awesome!
In "nano", when saving, enter CTRL-Y Enter You don't need that extra "x" Also, CTRL-L will clear the screen.
Cheers for your tips 😊 I'll be weaving them into my workflow
I purchased a Waveshare SIM7080G Cat-M/NB-IoT HAT for a project, but I'm no programmer. The project involves sending an SMS message via 4G IoT (NB-IoT) upon a triggering event. Do you know if there are similar scripts available which are specific to the SIM7080G Hat, which might get me started?
What if I want to provide internet to the raspberry Pi zero which is sitting inside my drone. Video is the only way of doing it or any cheap solution is available??
Awesome video! Thanks for that. You made it very simple.
When i tried printing the mount, it was too big can you specifiy the dimensions or upload them somewhere. great video keep it up!
Amazing video. Is there a way to establish ssh connection from raspberry pi with this module?
Nicely done, very good video.
Hiii, Great Explanation, Do you have videos on Waveshare SIM8200 M2 Hat?
I've been looking for a way to set up a pi at a hunting club hooked up to cameras and the internet so I can see deer activity. I've got a pi zero w 2 I'm planning on using for the project. The hardest part will be getting a reasonable price for service.
Hello Tim. How to setup 4G in SIM7600X module? If you have any links which describes the process would definitely help.
@Core Electronics
I noticed you said you needed a usb mic to make calls and to use the headphones for the hearing.. Is this correct? Isn't the jack in for both audio and mic? Can the mic of the raspberry pi via usb be accessed by the hat without using the 3.55mm jack?
Merci beaucoup
Thank you so much, can we use the same setup to access the Pi desktop using VNC and PiTunnel without further steps?
I reckon that is right up your alley with your current hardware - wb4son.com/wpblog/?p=1635
You also have the option to include a RTC to your system.
The existence of this might not impress you then - core-electronics.com.au/catalog/product/view/sku/CE08606
Truthfully for me this gear is about getting into the weeds and figuring out how all the connectivity methods blend together in our modern world.
At least the documentation/software support here seems solid enough compared to most modern SBCs even.
amazing, superb, top notch tutorial!
great video. Extremely easy to follow. Thank you
hi tim, this is a great video. i am using a pi zero 2w. when i run the "chmod +x configure && ./configure && sudo make && sudo make install" i get an aclocal error which appears to stop the drivers from loading. this is on a new debian bullseye build released 6/9 - if i run the script on the existing pi, it works. i am a newbie so no idea how to overcome
Hey mate, interesting question. Allow me to break it down a little, are you using the exact same HAT in the video on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2? The Installation guide for the Pi Zero HAT Version may just come in handy if so - www.waveshare.com/wiki/SIM7600G-H_4G_HAT_(B)
Also typing and entering a quick | sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade y | terminal command might just be the remedy.
If you run into more issues write up a post on our forum with some photos of your hardware 😊 We'll get your system up and running in no time - forum.core-electronics.com.au/
Any chance you have a tutorial on how to do a Post action using this hat? Running RPI4, have the SMS running, but having issues doing a HttpPost
Great video, thanks!
I have been using the module for a month and 2 days ago the NET LED started flashing. I checked what this means and found out that the module is looking for a network even though it is already connected.
What is the reason for this?
And how do I solve the problem?
I haven't encountered that before! Hit up our forum with some photos of your hardware and we'll best be able to diagnose - forum.core-electronics.com.au/latest
@@Core-Electronics I followed the documentation and I also added the execution of A7600E to rc.local, but still it is the case that the Raspberry is not always connected to the internet after a new boot.
What exactly am I doing wrong and what steps should I follow to connect the Raspberry to the network after booting?
You may be able to get better connectivity using the Raspberry Pi Lite OS version. You could also write a Python script to force the system to connect to the internet by pinging it multiple times.
I am currently using the same setup except a raspberry pi zero w instead. Would the code or the setup process change for the pi zero? Also is it ttyAMA0 instead of ttyS0 for the pi zero? Keep up the amazing work 🙏
Thank for your great tutorial
Would you please let me know they version of the raspberry pi version and can I do the same with raspberry pi 2 and the same GSM module?
help, I'm writing a bachelor's degree, I need to combine such a system with OBD for car diagnostics, but I can't find an application for visual supervision for Raspbian. In addition, after the command "cd /home/pi/SIM7600X-4G-HAT-Demo/Raspberry/c/bcm2835" it says that it cannot grant access. HELP(
Do s video on the SIM8280 model
Do you think a raspberry pi 3b would work for this? I get free data sims from Google Fi and want to build a Pi hotspot using my Pi but not sure if it's strong enough
Hello Tim. Thank you for the amazing video. I have the same hardware but instead of RaspberryPi OS I am using OpenWRT on my Raspberry Pi. Can you make a video how to access internet via GPIO pins and other features in OpenWrt.
Thanks in advance.
That is a brilliant idea! It will be added to my list of goals.
Thanks so much for putting this together!
Glad you enjoyed it!
If this was possible I guess it could be integrated with a 7" screen and be usable through the screen also. it is above my neuron limits.
when the Waveshare hat is using a sim card, would it use moble data (as is it was a phone) or hotspot data, becuse some phone providers offer unlimted 4g data for 30 bux a month, but no hotspot data
will this work on a pi 5?
Do you guys plan on doing a video on controlling dc/stepper motors with a raspberry pi 4 any time soon. I am struggling to find info.
Heyya mate, I've added it to the to do list. To give you some inspiration check out this HAT for Raspberry Pi here that will let you control DC or Stepper Motors - core-electronics.com.au/catalog/product/view/sku/ADA4280

Can you get practically the same use out of the SIM7600E with an arduino as with a RPi? I'm playing with a low power setup and i have good experience with sleep modes etc on an ATmega, where as the pi guzzles those sweet watts.
I use Pi-Star, and I would love to have this connected to Pi-Star and a Raspberry Pi, so there is no external cell hotspot.
Can I make a standalone portable 4G router for wifi hotspot out of it, without using the main Pi board? Will it be more efficient than those portable 4g routers?
Hiya :)
Thank you for the tutorial, so helpful!
Could you please a video on how to use the SIM7600E LTE Cat-1 HAT with a Raspberry Pi 4 model b as a router - or how to communicate and send data with a SIM card?
Thank you in advance!
If a connect several modems could I switch between SIM cards in a Python script? Its for OneTimePasswords QA automotion
Hi Your video is quite informative. I have question related to GPS as GPS is sending Time also. I am using the same method to read time from GPS. But the time i can read from GPS is UTC 0, I have change my CLK time zone to +32 after doing that network time is ok but GPS is still send with UTC 0.
Im usign the 4g dongle version of sim7600g-h. So is the procedure same?
1:46 Wait🧐!....? Pulls a hologram card and sim size adapter outta where?!? 🤣
I’m getting one of these!

Great video, thanks
Thanks for all information , but i need help for IMEI change for my country , i will make order from abroad? I want to change my 4G gsm module's IMEI Is it possible ?
That is an excellent question. My understanding is the IMEI is unique and not easy to change. You can see how to identify it in this guide here - wimsworld.wordpress.com/2022/07/16/more-networking-with-sim7600g-h-4g-hat-b-for-raspberry-pi/
HI Tim, I am currently running this 4G HAT with a Raspberry Pi in exactly the same hardware configuration that you are using (Same jumper configs and USB connections).
I'm looking into building a router that could connect via 5g or 4g lte. Is it possible to use one of those pci express iot modules for that purpose?
Yes you should be able to do it but it all depends on the driver situation. Software like OPNSense can use a connection as a fallback, but you need BSD drivers. Hit up google regarding the + . There will be a ton of information you can uncover regarding the best approach.
Would the same code and software or process apply for the sim R800C GSM/GPRS HAT For Raspberry Pi but on a pi zero w ?
Similar mate, there would undoubtedly be some changes in regards to the installation of packages and fine details in the scripts.
do you know how to enable the GPS from the 4G HAT to the openCPN in chartplotter?
What about voice calls? Do they work with Waveshare SIM7600G-H 4G DONGLE ? I hear only clicking when connected
We have a dedicated forum topic for this video, there is quite a lot of chatter in there and there might be some helpful information. If not, feel free to post your question in there! We have a lot of makers over there who can help out.

This would be pretty mad for the IP cameras I've setup in my ute; I could write a script for the NVR to push notification alerts direct to my phone without a 3rd party cloud service.
Absolutely you can! Proper sick project idea.
NVR as in network video recorder. would still be using a provider, ute aka vehicle
Thanks so much for this. It was a big help. In the video, you mentioned a 3D print file for the mount. Is that file still available somewhere?
Yes, head to the first link in the description to our written version of the guide at the bottom will be a download link to the STL and the scripts used in the guide/
I scaled it down to 10% of the downloaded version and it fit perfectly. Maybe a cm/mm units issue somewhere?
Is there a tutorial to make this function on ubuntu 20.04? Im running ROS and having issues entering the AT commands in
Hi, great video. I have followed all the instruction the calling is working, but sending a message seems to not working, the cms error 500 is popping up. Do you know any way to fix this? Do you think because the power of the gsm module isn't enought? since sending a message requires more power and ampere. Thank you.
Hey mate, come check the bottom of the full written up guide. There's lots of successful troubleshooting worth checking out there. If you can't solve the problem with that then pop the question there with some images of your hardware. I'll best be able to help you that way 😊
Great video.
Hi Tim!
I have a question regarding the 4G HAT - i'm currently working on a project and i cant find an answer to a question you might be able to answer
Is it possible to communicate with a certain other device which supports 4G? I have a smart power meter, IoT, and its called ADW300. This device supports 4G communication, but is it possible to read data from the ADW300 with the Raspberry Pi 4B (combined with the waveshare module)?
They dont need to communicate to each other, just the smart meter has to send its data to the raspi. How can they connect to each other?
Hey mate,
If you are sending data you need some form of communication.
Hope that helps 😊,
Tim
I have a relay board that my pi is plugged into and my pi gets it's power from the relay board. Is it possible to use this with a pi and relay board. The relay board does have a 40 pin connector that looks like what is on the pi.
Hi, I want to use a wifi video doorbell for a project but do not want to connect it to home wifi. I was wondering whether I can use this module with a data enabled sim card to create a wireless wifi network that the doorbell could connect to?
It may be possible to do it with this, another option might be to buy a small 4g router for your setup.
when I try to do the last two terminal commands it says I don't have permission to access the bcm2835 folder do you know why?
Most likely a Sudo permission issue, potentially due to the bcm2835 being installed via a Sudo command. Prefix those last two terminal commands with | sudo | to give you admin privileges when you run those last two terminal commands. That should fix you up.
I wonder if there is a way to do this on a mini pcie board inside a mini pc for camping/ car purposes

Such an excellent question and I haven't got an exact answer because it seems to me nobody has tried to use it with that Operating System. It looks like a challenging route to take but I do think it is possible.
Hey Tim, can you tell us how to identify which GPIO pins are unused by hat so that we can attach our sensors and drivers to ?
