  • U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the nation Thursday to brief the general public on the deadly midair collision at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. which occurred the night before.
Trump confirmed there were "no survivors."
An American Airlines jet with 60 passengers and four crew members aboard collided Wednesday with an Army helicopter while landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, D.C., prompting a large search-and-rescue operation in the nearby icy Potomac River.
Though Trump advised reporters that an investigation is ongoing and the cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed, he suggested the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policies - which he claimed the Biden administration was behind - may have something to do with the tragedy.
Backing the Republican leader, Vice-President JD Vance emphasized that the "colour of [one's] skin" shouldn't determine who qualifies for a high-level position. "We want to make sure we have enough people in air traffic control who are actually competent to do the job," he said.
The body of the American Airlines plane was found upside down in three sections in waist-deep water. The wreckage of the helicopter was also found. Three soldiers were on board. It is being considered the deadliest U.S. air crash in nearly 24 years.
