    • @Tyr_Magnus
      @Tyr_Magnus 2 года назад +1

      @Sweet Juicy Estus yeah, I beat Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania. When I was like 12. They're not impossible. And I've beat plenty of "difficult" modern games and on "hard modes" and such. So no need to be condescending. And I've tried a few DS games. "Klunky" is the first word I think of. The controls are so stiff. Not being able to swing your sword if you're next to a wall. Falling off edges because your attacks make you go forward is as bad as being knocked back off ledges. That ridiculous stamina bar. Etc. Etc. Etc.
      Again, it's not about not being able to beat parts, it's about knowing you're probably gonna have to do certain parts 5,10, 20 times to beat them along with possibly a long run back to it that may take 10-15 minutes or longer each time and just not having the patience to do so.

      Guess what dude? Not everybody is gonna like the same things. Some people are going to hate things you like. Because that's how shit works. Nothing is going to change their minds. So you can lose the superiority complex you guys so commonly have (and sometimes probably don't even realize you're doing it) and accept that some people actually just don't like DS games and it has nothing to do with being too hard or needing something to "click" or whatever else. Nothing is gonna change giving them a "fair chance" whatever that means. You're not providing any "insight" and nobody was asking for any anyway.
      You sound like a religious nut trying to convert people.

But died several times to very easy fights. He died at celestial emissary twice. But one shot Maria. He died over 10 times to Ebrietas but one shot shadows. I decided to re-watch the entire stream series, so I could figure out how many attempts Luke took to kill each boss, here's the results:
    Cleric Beast: 3
    Father Gascoigne: 4
    Blood Starved Beast: 1
    Vicar Amelia: 3
    Witches of Hemwick: 2
    Shadows of Yharnam: 1
    Darkbeast Paarl: 2
    Martyr Logarius: 1
    Rom the Vacuous Spider: 1
    Amygdala: 5
    One Reborn: 2
    Celestial Emissary: 2
    Ebrietas: 15 on stream attempts, beaten by let's play Luke after 20 minutes
    Micolash: 1
    Ludwig: 3
    Living Failures: 1
    Lady Maria: 1
    Orphan of Kos: 7 on stream attempts, 15 off stream attempts shown before it become a montage that I couldn't keep track of
    Laurence: 2
    Murgo's Wet Nurse: 1
    Gehrman: 2
    Moon Presence: 2
    Edit: I didn't include the hunter enemies because a lot of them didn't have names and that made it difficult to keep track of, also in the dlc there are hunter enemies that *do* respawn and it fiddly to keep track of. Maybe I'll track the number of times it took to kill the hunter enemies next re-watch.

    Feel like in a weird way Luke missed out a little by just being so damn good at the game. Like saying the Logarius fight wasn't particularly memorable for him after beating it on his first try. Not sure if this is true for other people but some of my favourite fights in these games are ones I struggled with. When you've had to re-try a boss fight a few (or a lot of) times you really get to know the intricacies of the fight, understand the mechanics of it and appreciate the design, setting and music more.
    Logarius and Maria kicked my ass but those fights are etched in my memory now.

    I’d highly recommend watching GMTK’s videos about easy mode. I would take an unbalanced easy mode on this game any day. I have physical disabilities that make super precise movements of my hands very difficult, and I didn’t play a single video game until my twenties so my skill level will never be as high as a gamer who started young and has normal hands. Not to mention the completely horrific gatekeeping in the culture surrounding the game, perpetrated by the fans of these games. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been told games “aren’t for people like me” and suggesting that my asking for completely optional accessibility I am ruining the game for everyone. My hard is not the same as your hard. There is no way for me to get the intended experience of this game as is. There are so many simple ways to offer difficulty options that don’t ruin the experience. If the myriad of indie games that nail “easy” or “assist” modes without sacrificing the vision can do so on a shoestring budget, a massive fromsoft game can certainly do it.

    • @looler12123
      @looler12123 3 года назад +2

      This is why I ADORE Nintendo Switch. I am legally blind so games like Bloodborne push my ability to process and see what's going on. I can do it, but the aftermath is taxing.
      It's more games like Monster Hunter or more classical JRPGs where the text is so small and that actually made the games until World unplayable because I couldn't tell what was going on. The Switch has built in magnification on the console so now that greatest roadblock is gone. It pains me that they are the only console to do so. The others have text to speech which... JRPGs like making words up, it makes things aggravating. Also menus so yeah, Nintendo Switch is great in helping those who need alternatives out.

    • @Tinyvalkyrie410
      @Tinyvalkyrie410 3 года назад

      @@nathanabel8169 for my types of issues, PlayStation is best. Nintendo is actually almost unusable for me, because the games rarely have good accessibility features and the controls are so delicate. They have so many built in options to make things easier for those of us with odd hands, and I think their exclusive games are some of the best in the industry for accessibility options. They really seem to prioritize that (unless they are made in Japan). I also know someone who uses Xbox because they have a lot of peripherals that can really help those with more dramatic issues than mine. I do wish this stuff would be standardized so all these options were on all consoles.

      That I can respect and agree with. It is nice to know the other systems account for other areas but yeah it would be great if these things were universal. Didn’t play it for about 6 months, randomly decided to start it again, and somehow had an epiphany moment when going through the tutorial area at the beginning. I agree with pretty much everything you guys said.
    About Sekiro's "easy mode", there's actually not one but two ways of increasing the difficulty after your first playthrough.
    The first, as Luke mentioned, is the demon bell, which you can find past the first headless demon in the early game area (there's a ninja door that leads you to it).
    The second is slightly more hidden.
    Pretty much nobody realized it but when you play the game for the first time, you have an item in your inventory called "Kuro's charm". This item has been secretly given to you by Kuro to protect you from harm (I mean...too much harm I guess).
    It is impossible to do anything with this item the first time around, it's just in your inventory for the entire run, however, when you restart a NG or a NG+ after you finished the game once, Kuro's dialogue, the first time you find him, will be a little bit different and you will be offered to either give him this charm back or keep it for yourself.
    If you choose to give it back, you'll be no longer protected by it, which translates by taking cheap damage everytime you block an attack normally (so, you're basically forced to deflect almost everything).
    It's not a bad feature but to be fair, I found the bell making the game a lot harder since deflecting the vast majority of attacks is pretty much what you're gonna do after finishing the game once anyway. Ringing the demon bell makes enemies a LOT harder, unless you're ringing it on NG+ (oddly, the bell has a much, MUCH smaller effect on a NG+ than on a NG, so, if you want to experience the hardest form of Sekiro, NG with Demon bell rung and no Kuro's charm is the way to go).
    About Bloodborne, you can definitely skip the final boss fight against Gehrman if you choose to wake up and yes, it counts as the bad ending.
    Now, to be fair, I found it easy to see coming since the game kinda present things as "do you want to let things evolve the way they are currently going (which is not very good at all) or do you want to intervene".
    It was actually the first ending I picked, knowing it would probably skip the boss.
    the reason I did that was, I loved Bloodborne so much that I knew I was going to replay it (in fact, I had another run on the way when I finished it the first time) and I wanted to keep the surprise of the final boss fresh. Also, I knew I was going to love this boss so, I wanted to be done with the ending that involved not fighting him immediately, so I've seen it and get to the fun stuffs for any furture runs.

    But because of Luke's game play, I searched unofficial patch for DS, and started play it. I'm still quite beginning in the game. Third boss is next - reached the smith. But one thing is, that I do not stress DS so much (as Luke and Aoife says in this video 1h 25min or so...), and reason is that I saw whole Luke's series of Bloodborne, and learned much from him. Most important is be patient. Defence first. Keep your head cool. If you do, you succeed much more. One point I started feel frustrated, and I started get all the time killed by weakest enemies in familiar area. So much, that I did not succeeded to do even any grinding - losing often all souls. Taking pause, doing something else, and coming back later fixed the problem.
    So, I think your "mood" or "attitude" is most important to win or lose in Bloodborne/Dark Souls. If I would not have seen Luke's playing, and how he succeeded, I would struggle so much harder.
    So far I played for same point (before third boss) with two different starts. Cleric start with str-based weapons, and wanderer start, with dex-based weapons. I wanted try, which kind I like more. Which feels better for me. I feel that with mace I kill faster non-boss enemies, but I feel better with scimitar. I'm more relaxed with it. Relearning timing for hit is bit hard between switching characters. What is perfect timing for mace is bit too late for scimitar.
    I want thank Luke for nice series of Bloodborne!
    PS. So far I didn't really learn use shield in Dark Souls... Or maybe so far I learned much better to use weapons with 2 hands. For parrying I have bad timing with shields, but with dagger I'm good parrying. Maybe learn later...

    The thing about balance and easy modes, easy modes don't have to be hard. Like you said, a "good hard mode" is you turn those dials _just so,_ such that it's hard but not impossible. Fair enough. To make that "easier" though, you only need to turn those dials back a bit. Give players more fails before it ends the encounter, make some parry windows a bit longer, etc. The people who want an easy mode will not be so demanding that it be "perfectly in balance," the devs do not need to agonize over whether easy mode is "balanced," the balance is around the hard mode, the easy mode is just something you can casually coast through, and that's ok.

    I really love the fromsoft games (haven't played bloodborne or demon souls) and they are really as hard as you make them. I like that most of the items are entirely optional and I did not use them for the most part until I started soul level 1 runs of dark souls 1-3. Often times the play style that you use makes it seem you are playing an entirely different game from other people, which can encourage people, like myself, to repeatedly play the games trying different play styles. Started the series with darks souls 3 did not look into it at all in advance and ended up trying a pure magic build (which I later learned circumvents most of the core mechanics and did not really learn to "properly" fight most of the bosses until later play throughs). I enjoyed this discussion and always find it interesting to hear what people think of these games (many people have that love hate relationship with the games).

And, based on the let's plays of Bloodborne that I've seen (Johnny and Aoife, Ben on Vidiots (I think it was Vidiots at least, was possibly triple jump)), it's safe to say that Luke absolutely smashed it. Gehrman in two tries! He seems almost supernaturally skilled at it. It's incredibly satisfying to watch.

    One thing I think would have been nice in these games is if they had a transmogrification system similar to Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, where you can make your armor look like any piece of armor for that slot that you have gotten. Bloodborne isn't so bad since the gear isn't as important as in the Dark Souls series or Demon's Souls. But I think for like the remaster of Dark Souls, and the remake of Demon's Souls a transmog system for the gear would have been a good idea to have added. This would also make it so you could level a weapon you like the stats of but you could make it look like a different weapon of that same type that you prefer the look of, as well do the same with armor you are using.

    I'd love a FromSoft gamer expert to list out the gate keeper bosses of each game. I've only ever beaten Sekiro (I'm getting close with Bloodborne) and I agree that Lady Butterfly and Genichiro are the big gate keeper fights, where the game just stands in front of you and says "Learn to play, dumbass." Or is Dark Souls so versatile in your options that there aren't really big tentpole gatekeepers in terms of "learn to play"? (Note i don't just mean HARD bosses, btw. Educationally hard.)

    • @dane1317
      @dane1317 4 года назад +2

      Ds1 has Ornstien and Smough as its gatekeeper boss, you have to crowd control using the pillars and they have pretty large health pools while being capable of killing you in one hit, even with highly upgraded health.
      Bloodborne’s gatekeeper boss tends to be Gascoigne as he forces the player to be fast and aggressive, but Vicar Amelia can also be a gatekeeper as she deals high damage if you haven’t upgraded your weapon and she has a lot of health while being able to heal.
      Ds3’s early gatekeeping fight is usually the Abyss Watchers as there’s 2 aggressive watchers fighting you and it has a second phase with another health pool, while Ds3’s mid game gatekeeping fight is Pontiff Sullyvahn. He’s aggressive, has very short and hard to predict windups, and deals physical dmg, fire dmg, and magic dmg.
      Cant speak for Ds2 as I haven’t played much of it.

    • @jothamfunclara5135
      @jothamfunclara5135 4 года назад

      I'd say definitely Ornstein and Smough for DS1, as you can't beat them without learning good spatial awareness: pillars, 2 bosses, wildly different fighting styles, go figure.
      For DS3, Darkeater Midir (idk, man, I think this guy's just unfair), Sister Friede (you'll have to play like you're in Bloodborne for a sec), or if you prefer base game only, Aldritch (spatial awareness, stamina management, not to mention what is most likely the most lackey-concentrated area in the game right before the boss area).
      I too, have never played DS2.

DS2 is a kinda tricky one because there are just so many bosses that it is hard to nail down which is the first real gatekeeper. I personally really struggled with the Ruin Sentinels because they required you to nail everything you’d learned so far, with the added curveball of there being three of them. Like someone else mentioned, the Demon of Song is another big one - gaining/closing distance, stamina management and timing, are all really important

    EDIT: nvm, she was referring to herself and Johnny. Now I feel quite silly.

    Dark Souls 3 next Luke. You can do IT!

    Luke, I don't know if it's for you but the NG+ without Kuros charm version of Sekiro is an amazing example of differcult. It's true that enemy health and damage is pumped up but since you have all the gourd/beads and experience from your first playthrough, that won't be a problem for a while. The real increase in differculty is the reduction of posture and how you can take damage from blocking so you need to parry perfectly. Mastering that mode is one of the best feelings I've had in a video game.
    Ps I tried NG (not plus) without the charm and it is insanely differcult. I thought I was good after beating the game charmless but that run is hell.

    I keep being distracted from bloodborne talk by the arcanumesque background music. Very different esthetic.

    After watching Luke stream Bloodborne I finally got around to trying it myself on my sisters PS4. Some of Luke's magic must have rubbed off on me because I beat Gascoine first time (Cleric beast took me a few tries).

    I really enjoyed these streams and I know I'm going to revisit them, especially some of the boss fights and tougher areas. I do wish they'd discussed the estus flask/healing gourd system versus the blood vial system. Perhaps I'm the odd one out, but I really hate the estus/gourd system of Dark Souls and Sekiro. Maybe it's because I'm used to using healing potions as I go and not really thinking about it. I get that the whole point with the Souls games is to be cautious and to pick your fights and how you handle them, and that Bloodborne is meant to encourage you to be aggressive and to just keep going in for attacks and not backing off. You also can't rest at the lamps like you can at the bonfires. I just like that I can go farm some echoes and buy some or go to certain recurring enemies to get the larger than usual number they drop. That aspect is something I'm really going to enjoy when I finally get to Bloodborne.
    I just really don't like the estus flask use limits despite being able to refresh it at a bonfire. I really want to like Sekiro, but one healing gourd use until you defeat that one general early in the game is just wrecking me. No, I have not been able to "git gud" at Sekiro. Normal enemies and wolves are easy. Anything requiring more than one death blow? Way more difficult compared to the other enemies, and not in a way that seems balanced/leveled in comparison. Easy, very difficult, and nope seem to be categories of enemies in Sekiro; ranging from common enemies to ones like the generals to the actual bosses. Yeah, you don't have to go retrieve the souls/echoes you dropped when you died, but you lose sen and xp each time and spread that dragon rot disease all over the place, making you have to go cure that to progress any of the other quests. I do like not having a shield though, so there's that.

      I agree, at least with regards to DS1. Although there's this weird, inexplicable (at least to me) mechanic in ds3 where you sometimes replenish estus after killing certain non-player enemies. Being the soul-farming hoarder that I am, it's usually back to full by the time I get to the next boss, or at least I make it so it is.

      @@jothamfunclara5135 I got a bit frustrated with DS1. I got up to the upper level where the dragon/wyvern flies by and quickly got killed by some bow using undead dudes. I then got rather stuck with getting killed repeatedly on the stairs back up there. I'm also playing the Prepare to Die edition and I know the game has some issues with fps in Blighttown. I switched to DS3 and while I'm enjoying it so far, I'm also having motivation issues since my brain really wants to be playing Bloodborne instead, and that's not happening till I get the PS5 (might as well shell out for a new console entirely and get access to both PS4 and PS5 games).
      I definitely won't be encountering a boss without having renewed by estus flask. DS3 seems, so far, more reasonable with having bonfires closer to bosses, so I shouldn't have to fight too hard to get to the boss if I rest at a bonfire. The trouble I also have is that the damn healing animation is so slow and you can't do a thing except walk casually as you drink, and that's more than enough time for anything to hand you your head on a platter.
