    The depth in DMC and Ninja Gaiden is different I feel. In DMC it’s about making these pointless long complex combos to build your style meter. In Ninja Gaiden it’s more about staying alive from the absolute insanity. I’m more of a DMC player but I like both a lot.

    NG Black leans more on defensive play while NG2 is more on offensive. This idea is reinforced by the fact it includes mid-combo i-frames (teleport/dash moves)in some weapons as defensive maneuver. I agree with the first being just a stepping stone to what it is meant to be. We should consider NGB is a remaster therefore it should be more polished than NG2.

    Been playing this game again just to relieve some fun times and well surprised to see how well it holds up. So glad to know my memory was correct in remembering this game fondly because it's just such a fun game to play and mess around with. The only real technical issue I remember is just when you're going up those stairs in (I believe chap 12?) and you get swarmed with so many enemies that the frame rate drops. Back when I first experienced that, I thought that gmthe game just couldn't handle me slicing my way through countless enemies and performing combo after combo with different weapons. It was a part of the game I always looked forward to back then. It's gone now with the Xbox One and ngl, a part of is sad for that but the game is still fun and that's all I care about. Great review.

    I hated Ninja Gaiden Black, loved Ninja Gaiden 2, I know I'm in the minority with this but Ninja Gaiden 2 fixed everything I hated about Black. Ninja Gaiden Black felt like it suffered from an identity crisis, I wasn't feeling the combat it just felt dull and lifeless, the only thing that stood out about Black for me was its emphasis on difficulty, everything else was uninspired and bland. Ninja Gaiden 2 on the other hand knew what it wanted to be and stuck with it, they cut out almost all the tedious stuff that black had and refined the combat system to actually make it fun, they made the combat feel more brutal and showy which made things far more satisfying for me, the enemy count also makes things more fun because it makes combat engagements exciting, oblitieration techniques were the biggest change that I loved because it gave me something to strive towards in combat as opposed to just trying to find the most effective technique at dealing damage, I'd actively look for opportunities to delimb enemies to finish them with obliteration techniques, it makes utilizing ryu's moveset more worthwhile as you never have to worry about the enemy's health, only their limbs.
    I also think the levels are way better. First level of black is just dumb, you start off in what I'm guessing is a training area and fight your sensei but it doesn't feel exciting to me. Ninja Gaiden 2's first level just throws you straight into the excitement, one of the best first levels ever and has a fantastic atmosphere, it just gets straight to the point. There are many other levels that are fantastic in 2 like the venice level and the temple level, those levels looked stunning, I also likes chapter 4 with the statue of liberty a lot too, so many memorable locations, in Black everything was just brown and grey rooms that were forgettable. Ninja Gaiden 2 took the Onimusha 3 approach by making everything epic which I prefered.
    Also the music is better too, more energetic and fits the battles better, having ryu making battle grunts also makes things so much more satisfying, reminding you that there's actually a human being under that mask. It's the little details like the gore, music and sounds that make all the difference. In Black the sound effects are bland and uninteresting.
    The weapons are also way cooler too, I get to use a huge ass scythe? Hell yeah, plus the falcon talons are way more fun to use than the lame ass vigoorian flail, which also returns but they improved it.
    I also love the way healing works, no longer do I get out of a tough encounter with barely any health left and are forced to consume an item, now I can win a fight by the skin of my teeth and get my health restored which encourages me to keep going since I have a better chance of survival against the next group of enemies than I would if I just had a tiny bit of health.
    I mean the game is far from perfect, those mines were annoying in the water, lava and under the snow, were they really necessary? The framerate isn't brilliant either like you said and those twin armadillos were annoying as all hell.
    Still, even with its flaws, it's more fun than anything in Black, Black was just a slog for me. Boring as all hell, not to mention frustrating at times. Ninja Gaiden 2 kept me engaged throughout despite any annoying parts it threw my way because the combat was so much fun.

      I think NGB wanted to be the whole package. For that I think it’s why many consider it to be the best. Many users and critics seem to have the general belief it’s an A+ game. For me it’s a perfect balance of action with just a hint of exploration and adventure to spice things up.

But I admit I never completed the game cuz I needed to rest my mind and take a break from the over the top action and so many times of dying and trying to beat a level. I adore that game as well, bought every copy I could and still play it to this day. It really is a perfect storm of game design in my opinion. Man, I love this game, and I fully agree with your analysis. The combat is so visceral and satisfying. One thing people often don't comment about the original NG2 is that even on Master Ninja difficulty, enemies die *fast* (especially with Obliteration), which makes it super satisfying to cut through whole groups of them. I actually bought an Xbox 360 just for this game and it was 100% worth it.
    I also agree about Razor's Edge being sort of a miracle upgrade to the vanilla game. Steel on Bone is so fun in RE.

    Speaking as someone who has beaten Dante Must Die in DMC3: SE, and who only quit HOH because it was boring, I'm going to say that Ninja Gaiden has deeper combat. They're both deep, but I give the edge to ninja gaiden. There's a lot of basic, easy shit you can do in DMC3 (short hop divekicks, trickster air dashing) to scrub around with enemies and bosses. The barrier to execution is low unless you only play in Royal Guard style. The closest thing to cheese in Ninja Gaiden (that I'm aware of) is Flying Swallow/throw spam and it barely works even on low difficulty. Enemies are also a lot more restrained in DMC3 compared to Ninja Gaiden 2. They have very obvious tells.

    • @assassinonprozac
      @assassinonprozac 10 месяцев назад

      DMC’s depth lies in combo potential and in that regard DMC has 10x the amount of depth Ninja Gaiden has. If all you’ve done is beaten DMD than you haven’t even come close to scratching the surface of what DMCs combat has to offer. I think even the most die hard DMC fans would agree that basic combat against normal enemies in DMC is extremely shallow and that’s why basically no one who’s good at the games cares about it. Ninja Gaiden’s depth lies in fighting basic enemies and the scoring system and in that regard Ninja Gaiden has 10x the amount of depth DMC has, but the combo potential in Ninja Gaiden is basically non-existent. Both games do different things and are deep in different ways, we don’t need to endlessly compare them.
      And you can absolutely cheese your way through Master Ninja in all three Ninja Gaiden games, not as easily as in DMC but you can do it. You can grind essence in the first chapter to buy Devil mushrooms and just Ninpo spam your way through NG2 along with Falcon’s Talons >Y and Flying Swallow Izuna Drop, and NG3 has the almighty Graveyard Spin, cold charged UTs, and Steel on Bone. NGB has the least cheese but you can still grind money in chapter 4 to get the UF and use that to destroy everything for the rest of the game along with being able to just rebuy healing items whenever you want. And of course UT chaining makes a lot of fights a breeze to get through especially in NG2 with the Tonfa UT, Lunar 360UT, and Windmill Shuriken UT.
      Also, “the barrier to execution is low” is hilarious, DMC has the highest execution barrier of any action game by far.

    Maybe I overvalue it at times, but I really treasured it when DMC1, 3 and 4 did some good platforming or environment ideas. There are obviously bad cases in the series like the underwater boss in the game I won't speak about.
    I like my action and won't hate Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae for only being a series of battles in a small arena, but if a series didn't start off being too linear or just a series of Bloody Palace floors, I expect a series to keep it.
    Technically, NG started off pretty different on NES sure but its 3D identity seemed to have some interesting filler (first game and Dragon Sword it seems) which I expect to miss as I move into the later games.
    I imagine I'll have a decent opinion if combat is still great since DMC5 squandered some combat and environment potential (unless you use mods for the former) and still ended up being my game of the year but I can agree in part with people who don't want NG to become just action.

    This is one of, if not my overall favorite game of all time. It is imo the pinnacle of the action hack n' slash genre, while I like a lot of games in the genre(DMC, God of War, Force Unleashed II, Bayo1, No More Heroes, etc. etc.) but nothing comes close to the greatness that is NGII. They couldn't even replicate the greatness with Razor's Edge but they came close on the combat* side at least.
    I own this game on 360(twice, one copy has a slipcover) PS3(twice, managed to get the Gamestop exclusive CE last year) Vita, and PS4. I only want a last-gen or current Xbox literally just to play vanilla NGII at 4k/60, and I almost bought the Master Collection physically but Sigma 1 and 2 are a bit censored regardless if you get the Asia or JP release..but Razor's Edge isn't censored at all. Makes sense hahaha.
    I hope we get an NG4 or reboot someday, I love Nioh and Wo Long but they aren't Ninja Gaiden man..feels like Souls clones have taken over the action hack n' slash genre completely and there hasn't been many since the PS3 era really, other than the odd Bayo, DMC5, re-releases, God of Diablo(why does GoW have cooldowns and RPG lite mechanics that add nothing to the game?) and Onechanbara if that counts.
    There was a samurai game announced recently that looks cool, and some other DMC clone that has been in development for god knows how long. They look interesting but they look they'll never release.

    there's no guarantee on "sheathing" your sword to get a delimb, that is just misinformation. there are certain attacks that delimb nearly everything time like >x and xxy the DS or xxy lunar for a head decap dual sword >xy, 360 y, yyyy. It is somewhat random but it does affect how enemies attack depending on the limb cut off.
    guard buffer is not the correct term but you can reverse wind off of a guard break, as it's called in the moves list. guard reset is more advanced as it acts more as a parry where you guard break into another without needing to reverse wind. Also shuriken cancel, OT cancels after >x moves, OL moves into UTS/ETS, essence staggers (which was nerfed/changed in 2), a lot of stuff.
    also the NG2 reviews were like 7-8 to 9 at best, they weren't bad but gamespot did give it the "least improved sequel" award.

    Ninja Gaiden 2 has the most iconic frame rate slow down of all time, on those stairs in chaoter 10 i believe, everything goes in to slow motion, you enter the matrix, completely unintentional, but a part of the game i have gone out of my way to replay time and time again, just one of the many "charming" characteristics of the series
    Edit: well done sir ahahaha

    I like NG2 but NG is way better and more fluent I feel like NG2 is a tad bit too fast if that makes sense. And NG2 is a little too easy and the enemies rely too much on cheap grabs plus the camera angles are a bit shitty sometimes but it’s still a great game. The first one is more fluent and wayyy harder but fair if you know how to properly play it.

      I agree. However Ninja gaiden sigma 2 fixes most of those issues. Not as gory but IMO it is the hands down the best version. Excellent frame rate, poor bosses removed, added weapons and better pacing of combat.

    It was hard for me to adjust to NG2 after playing NGS and NGB over and over again. It took my alot of time to get used to the offensiveness the game demands, if you try to play like NG1 you're gonna get creamed and I've come to appreciate that in my current Master Ninja run.

    I feel like anyone who likes this genre of game is doing themselves a disservice by not checking out Ninja Gaiden 2, regardless of the ranking they would theoretically place it in. The only word of warning would be that Ninja Gaiden series (well, at least the first 2) is probably the hardest of the genre so choose your difficulty accordingly.

    I don't really enjoy the dissmemberment system in this game. The way it works is that light attacks are more likely to take an enemy's arm or leg than a heavy attack. There are more points to it, but it railroads combat as ignoring it can make fights take forever and, in some cases, nearly impossible because a lot of enemies have super armor (unlikely to be staggered by an attack), are really fast, and fight in packs of other enemies of the same type. Your comparison of the dissmemberment system to Doom's glory kill system, though understandable, is flawed. The glotry kill is like decapitation in NGB, where it only appears when the enemy is low on health to the point where theirs almost dead, or in the case of NGB, happens when you use a specific attack that would've killed the enemy even without the decapitation system. NG2 on the other hand has it where you can, either A: use a number of attacks to kill the enemy normally, or B: use just a few light attacks that takes off a limb, and immediately use a heavy attack to kill an enemy when it still has about half health. Otherwise your arguments are more than fine. The only other problem is that base Xbox One runs the game perfectly. I don't want to come off as a jerk who wants to ruin the game for you and you should enjoy NG2 because it's a good game. I just wanted to clear up a mistake that bothered the h÷)) out of me.

  • @GeezOozCryst
    @GeezOozCryst 3 года назад +3

    7:11 It actually was based on the Brutal Doom Mod, which introduced the glory kills system, I highly doubt they took it from Ninja Gaiden 2, beacause you can execute the enemies in modern Doom without having to dissmember them, you just do enough damage and the put them out of their misery
    9:33 Of course you can spam charged attacks in 2 in almost every section of the game, that's how the no damage runs have been done, if you miss some orbs to chain, it starts to get difficult and have to create some oportunitty to survive.

    I still feel that Black is better overall for higher difficulties, but yes II is amazing in its own right. I honestly prefer playing more defensive in these kinds of games. I wish Gaiden II added memorable new bosses in Mentor and Master, like Ishtaros and the clone fights. I also wish there was less of the projectile spam in higher difficulties. I mean sure you can argue that you have to tools to give you i-frames to avoid the damage from the explosions, but I feel that the frequency with which you are spammed forces you to abuse these tools far too much, making the game more repetitive than some, perhaps overzealous, fans would like to let on. The thing is, how much you will enjoy Ninja Gaiden II on Mentor and Master Ninja mode depends on whether you appreciate aspects such as the limb dismemberment system and UT abuse (yes you can do this as well in Gaiden Black, but you aren't forced too - key difference). I personally do not like the dismemberment/OT system that was added in Gaiden II, so I gravitate more towards Black.
    I really like to use my full combos in combat. I do not like having to wait until I only have one enemy to use these. In Gaiden II you just keep getting interrupted cause you have to press Y to avoid an explosion. You never get to finish your combo until you have only one enemy left, and I personally dislike this. I don't play Ninja Gaiden to wait to enjoy the game, I like having more control over the fight, ya know. I also liked the Golden Scarab collectables and rewards in Black. The skulls in Gaiden 2 I felt were a major step down, cause they did not bring a significant impact to the game. I like my Dark Dragon Blade and Kitetsu, okay? Just putting my opinion out there.

    Oh yeah, a lot of people prefer NG1 or NGB over II but imo the combat is *so* much better in II that I just can't agree with those people. NGB does still feel good to play, but to me it feels a lot like Onimusha in a way. I do prefer Razor's Edge over 1 as well, purely for the combat.
    Also people complaining about the Metroidvania style level design compared to the more linear style in 2 and 3 bugged me too. Can't say I cared about getting stuck or progressing through some of the areas in older DMC games and NG1. I don't think it adds much to these types of games, like how much backtracking did you do in that damn tower in DMC3? Hahaha.

    • @H-TownGamer
      @H-TownGamer 6 месяцев назад +1

      On combat they are better. But you have to consider other aspects it definitely is better in. For example it has some of the best environments in NGB. Ice cavers, aqueducts, volcanos etc. Some of the most rememberable bosses as well. That combined with its semi exploration provides a very completed experience.
      It’s just an overall more polished completed game why is why it the game with the highest reviews.

    The combat, in most encounters, does put a smile on my face, however, compared to the first game, it feels rushed. I respect your opinion, but to me, the first game feels more balanced and complete. NG2 is by no means a bad game, but if I were to assign ratings to 1 and 2, I’d give 1 a 9.5 and 2 an 8.5. While the first game has largely uninspired bosses, 2 has that, and some that are just straight bs (looking at you, chapter 3 boss).

    Overall, I think Ninja Gaiden 2 has some of the best combat mechanics in the genre. But sadly everything surrounding that is really poorly done. Most of the bosses aside from Genshin are terrible, it relies too much on you having to rely on invincibiltiy frames/spamming ultimate techniques to negate the poorly designed enemies, there's a lot of glitches and bugs (thankfully most are patched now).
    The enemy encounter design feels extremely cheap sometimes, you'll have gatling rocket ninjas constantly spamming stupidly accurate rockets at point blank range, not to mention the IS ninjas. Im fine with you having to be more aggresive in combat, but not because of unfair enemies.
    I think if this game had another year in development it could have been amazing, but it kinda of feels like a beta imo. It kind of reminds me of DMC4 somewhat.

    I think NGB is the best game just because it is an over all rounder. And is accompanied by some of the best environments and rememberable bosses. I think however NG2 does get too much hate. It is very close to NGB because although it does have some flaws, such as poor story, extremely linear design. The combat is absolute perfection..
    I give NGB a 9.5 and NG2 a 9

    Ninja Gaiden 2 is an excellent game, but Ninja Gaiden Black is still superior. Black had better bosses, more balanced difficulty, better music, and stronger level design. I think that when compared between the 2 games, NG1 gave you more of a break between the fights and all the glorious brutal action with the platforming and the non linear level layouts and exploration. Which in NG2 it's non stop and after playing it for a long hours, it gets a bit too much to the point when it's Bleh!, kinda like having too much of a food you like e.g. corn and cheese, it so rich and you feel sick afterwards. Also agree with the jungle stage, chapter 9 I believe, it's freaking annoying with the rocket spam. I also started with 2 but after finishing 1, I found myself playing 1 a lot more often and revisit 2 every so often. 3 at least Razors edge which I've played has good combat but campaign freaking sucks, unmemorable combos, ugly level designs, terrible bosses and awful and stupid characters and story. After Igataki left, the series is truly gone.

  • @thomaswenger7147
    @thomaswenger7147 3 года назад +1

    Combat is definitely better in 2 but almost every level is just a long hallway and it overstays its welcome at the end In my opinion. Also I’d say bosses are a bit beefier in NG black. They get melted even on master in NG2.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  3 года назад +4

      the thing about the game design of ng1 vs ng2 is that I actually vastly prefer the level design of ng2. Now, I do know that most mainstream critics will say ng1 level design is better because it has more variety with being open worldish and having platforming sections and playing a bit more like legend of zelda. However, for me I feel like the point of the ng series is the combat and that the other aspects of ng1 feel like boring filler to me, especially the stupid water sections. So while ng2's level design is much more linear and straightforward, I would say that's actually a huge improvement over aimlessly wandering around in ng1. I made a vid abou this concept actually, as it appears in shmups: ruclips.net/video/9Ew5hEMSzEw/видео.html
