As a spurs fan he hit the nail on the head. Bruce Bowen was one of the best role players we ever had, hence why his jersey is in the rafters now.
Same with Fabricio he was like the only legit center we had for a while and we didn't have another starting caliber center until Tiago developed
@@Sqeaky6969 the spurs are better than anybody at signing young and/or unproven players, and turning them into world class role players, and in some cases turning them into stars. Players like Derrick White, Dejounte Murray, Lonnie Walker, Danny Green, were all unknown names when they came to the Spurs. When it was all said and done, they'd be signing 8 & 9 figure contracts with championship caliber teams. Kawhi is the prime example of this. I'm just so excited to see what heights Wemby will reach as he takes that same path with us.
All 3 of those guys we traded for RJ were absolutely cooked. Before you consider the contract extension RJ got in summer 2010, the trade for him in 2009 was an absolute steal for the Spurs. Now, the opportunity cost of then giving RJ an extension that limited our flexibility and eventually took trading a 1st round pick just to dump, that definitely made the initial trade for RJ a failure.
We only had so much cap flexibility and we kind of needed him to be a player like Danny Green or Kawhi Leonard; amazing as the 4th best player on any team. Instead we got a guy who was great as the 6th best player on a team and very underwhelming as the 4th best or maybe even 3rd best option like they may have hoped he'd been.
It has always sounded like RJ never fit in as a personality with the team and maybe didn't do things the same way or as well as the Spurs wanted, but he had a positive impact on the team and was maybe the biggest reason outside of the Big 3 that we started so strong in 2010-11. This after we'd had maybe the worst season of the Duncan era just before he arrived in 08-09 (Manu's injuries were the biggest part of that).
Richard was basically the same level player in 10 and 11 that Bruce Bowen was at any point as a Spur; considering how destructive a force Bruce was to the Spurs' offense. One guy got to play on better teams, had less expected of him, made less money, and was a pillar of the community, so he gets his number retired. The other guy is somehow one of the most maligned figures in recent Spurs history.

Relax, people. RJ is just teasing Iggy. Truth be told, they were very different players. RJ in his prime was primarly a scorer, while Iggy has always been more of a playmaker, team oriented player, and a WAY better defender. I would pick Iggy in most situations, but RJ was pretty good on his own.

It's wild the package that was traded for andre. Like it was a good trade because andre was a key part of those championship teams for golden state but damn 3 players 2 1st rounders and 2 2nd rounders for him is crazy. Idk about FAR better. They’re pretty similar players, all things considered. Iggy definitely better on defence, but I’d argue Iggy was never as good as Jefferson offensively around their peaks. Both could grab some rebounds when you needed it. Iggy’s legacy is heavily reliant on his time in GSW, Jefferson just wasn’t as lucky in getting on maybe the best team of all time

Steph should've won that FMVP for sure, but you can't dismiss that award out of hand for Andre because he was integral to that team for that first championship. RJ played well for those Cavs teams, but Iguodala was so much more valuable for those Dubs.
