This is my favorite Kurt Elling song, and he sang it wonderfully at his Newport appearance in '01. My mother lived in Mesa, Arizona, and there are orange trees everywhere in town. They give off a wonderful aroma--the sweet perfume of it. My mother is gone now, and I associate this song with her. Every time I hear "Orange Blossoms in Summertime" by Kurt I feel like crying because I think of my mother.
This was the tune I discovered him on…if you have never seen him live in a small space, make time to do so. He is an amazing performer - one for who recordings don’t really do justice. He is a true instrumentalist of the voice and he can really swing. Thanks for the music, Kurt.
Fabulous! Kurt in his prime and solid voice; Laurence in brilliance and sensitive partnership; Rob on the bass with gentle knowledge of all things jazz and the horns and percussion in perfect harmony. Never saw this particular clip before. It is a classic. Thank you sooo much for posting!
I was 14 the first time i heard this song on a community radio station that played jazz in the evenings and it felt like someone had finally written and composed a song that i had been waiting to hear my whole life. 18 years later and its still my favorite song.
Kurt E is one of the very finest jazz vocalists, and I mean all time. Said by big admirer of Billie, Ella and Sarah, of Eddie, Frank and Jon and so many others.
