I love the music that this guy made with Moby grape as well as his solo album. I had the great pleasure to meet him briefly and he jammed with the band I was in in a small bar in the 70's. It was a wild ride and he was alot of fun. Skip, was really cool!
It sounds to me like this guy really depicted that era I think if I was lucky enough to have been able to hang with him I'd have to be heavy into that scene and not just a dabblin' :)
What a beautiful noise! Just an awesome piece of great sounds and this hypnotic man speaking about making his last and first real journey to where and whatever. Love his Oar platter and this one continues right away from 1969 to nowadays. What a trip.
For any & all who have expressed interest in the tunes Skip & I recorded together in the later half of the 1990s, I have FINALLY uploaded 5 tunes (including our original version of "Land Of The Sun"). These are streaming only for now & not for sale yet until everything is completed & Skip's estate is able to get their share of any sales, etc. Get in touch with me if you want to get on my mailing list also, there are things you may be interested in coming down the road. Cheers! "Unearthly Estate" soundcloud.com/haarp-recording/unearthly-estate-eternitys-gate
Im not sure about this not being accepted for creepiness, but it's definitely unique. And I could see how it would be incredibly difficult if not impossible to place in any soundtrack, even for the x-files. Which is one of the many reasons why I love this song, and why I love Skip.
yes! like, maybe it would distract the viewer. it would certainly distract me from whatever was happening in the story. i would be mesmerized by the song...
It wasn't going to be in the show, it was slated for a tribute album: Songs in the Key of X. I would wholeheartedly recommend checking it out, but this track would have been a highlight. Skip and his music meld well with the show's creepy paranoia.
I love Skip's beautiful musical artistry! As such, maybe we could have titled this tribute album, "Another Oar," to finally give the man both oars in the water, so to speak? It's funny..."More Oar". More of a single oar... And, I guess ultimately fitting of Skip's madcap nature.
So let me get this straight. X-Files, a show that includes; flukeman, the garbage monster, a camouflage monster under the bed, alien abduction, inbred mutants, and a scene where a woman gives birth to snakes, said this was too creepy?
+Matthew Lee: I agree with your thought on this! It was rumored that this tune was "too spooky" by the producer who was the go-between from Warner Bros. to Skip & myself (Skip & I did this together, we both played the guitars in the tune). This version is good, but our original version is even better. I've still got the original recordings.
Thanks! It was really cool knowing Skip & doing music with him, we had a lot of mutual appreciation for each other. I want to upload the original stuff, but I have to make sure I won't be dodging "bullets" first. The guy who became his "publisher" in the late 1990s wouldn't even give me credit for my part in this song, so I told him I would never work with him. All I wanted was credit for what I did.
Brian Vaughan Ah yeah I can understand that, copyright and licensing issues these days are insane. I read about the nonsense that Moby Grape had to go through and it wasn't pretty to say the least. They should've been way bigger than they were.
I don't know how they found this song too creepy... I'd probably understand the X-Files rejecting someone like Scott Walker (Listen to The Drift for reference), but this has a really pretty groove to it! I gotta watch some more of that show...
This was a fitting way to close out the album. Yes, I'm aware that it was recorded three years prior, for a separate project, but it's as if Skip is saying here, "It's been a real lark, but I'm out of here".
I imagine this as spoken word by a chemically enhanced Donald Sutherland..staring out beyond the desert mesa his eyes slowly gravitating up towards the middle of the sky
Skip & I actually recorded 3 different versions of "Land Of The Sun" in December 1995, some of what you hear in this release is parts of our guitar work from the 2nd version. In my archive I also have an acoustic guitar riff version from Skip I recorded in late December 1995. Jack Casady is playing bass on this recording you have been listing to as well. It looks like name dropping, but he was there! The song was ready for release in early 1996, though, so you were close!
Skip spence was a pure genius musician..RIP skip
Skippy's laugh and chuckle never died! Skip Spence lives!! Skippy is EVERYWHERE....
My second favorite Skip Spence song after Little Hands! ❄️🌍❄️

this aint skip
he shone like syd barratt
He played drums in my uncles band briefly before bouncing off somewhere else. this was before the Airplane I think.
@@lostsailor76 What was the name of your uncles band?

"Beautiful noise" a perfect way to put it!
When this man did LSD he didn't just peek through the letterbox like myself. He kicked the front door open and ran inside.
WELL said my friend!
... what a trip, is right!

beautiful! thanks for posting!
As ominous as the music sounds, the lyrics are typical Spence, eccentric at times, but always warm hearted. RIP SS.
ok. I think it's kicking in
God this is beautiful. It brings you right into his state of mind too!
LSD may have opened that door wide open but fuck me this is rocking. Skip is a legend
They still don’t get you skippy. And they never will. That’s the beauty of it isn’t it skippy? Yes it is! 🤪🤪🤪
This is freakin fantastic!!! Nuthin else like it anywhere.

Songs in the Key of X had a great pre-gap hidden song, this would have made a great secret ending.
Brilliantly demented.

Genius... That was amazing. Music with color.
Skip Spence was 52 years old, when he died on April 16, 1999 at the time!!!
Skippy was the shit!!!
All my life I really love you Skippy The Bush Kangaroo

+Brian Vaughan This is a great track man. It must've been great to be an acquaintance of Skip. Any chance you'd upload the original version?

Right? When I heard that I knew that I HAD to hear it. I was right

Is this the song rejected for the X files film? It is good, why was left out?
Different. It's unique, I'll give it that
Jack Casady on bass.
No, Skip is playing all the instruments on this recording.
@@lk63 That is Jack Casady on bass.
Is there lyrics for this anywhere?
Here after Kim drac’s new album 🙋♀️ researching lolol
sounds like something Peter Gabriel or Talking Heads might do 10 years later
Sounds eerily like Iggy Pop speaking.
Ken Eddings Or Ric Flair

when was this recorded, anyone know?
1996
Thank you, I love this song! Shows he still had the talent, even if sporadic, right to the end.
skip spence kicks ass. I jus got this weird nostalgic bug like 20 mins ago listening too moby grape and jefferson airplane.
Now i'll have to go listen to surrealistic pillow again. And Omaha. And seeing. Looks like my evening's musical accompaniment is set, haha
