    I had the opportunity to see Skip, with Moby Grape, in the late 60s in NYC. Opening act was Procol Harem. Both bands were wonderful, and Skip was a real performer.

    Antipsychotics in the 70s were brutal
    2nd generation antipsychotics of today are still very bad. His life in the hospital would have been hell.
    Incredible music career for someone who lived with Schizophrenia

      Look at Rocky Erikson, not sure if thats the right spelling, they really messed him up too. In 8th grade I told my psychiatrist that I got adderall from somebody in an impatient program and it made me feel good…he wrote the script. I abused the shit out of it and had a had a big break down like any speed freak. They locked me up again and started giving me all kinds of anti psychotics and it all wreaked havok on my young years. I wonder how many kids they are destroying still today. I stopped all meds at 18 and Im perfectly content, sane and successful

    The most influential artists in great music of the 1960’s to die to young due to drug related issues would be Syd Barrett, Peter Green, Roky Erickson, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and Brian Jones!

    Skip was a great songwriter, singer and musician whose mind was unable to come back from that one, last, powerful acid trip. While others who took even more acid than him were able to come down and continue the rest of their lives unimpaired, he was not. Quel domage. RIP, brother.

      it was LSD? I think it was something else, his mind was gentle, he seemed aware of everything and very kind to me

    • @Glicksman1
      @Glicksman1 2 года назад +2

      @@susyvinoszelaya1177 I understand that it was LSD and possibly other hallucinogens. It doesn't matter.
      As far as being aware and kind, there is nothing at all about the effects of LSD that prevents either.
      You are apparently unfamiliar with its effects. Good for you. Leave that stuff alone. However, you can look up information about it and, while every "trip" is unique, even for the same individual, you might do so in order to better generally understand what Skip and many others experienced.
      Understand that the chemical that we call "Acid" is not regulated or controlled or made by a pharmaceutical company. It's an amateur-made chemical that varies widely in purity, strength and duration. It's often mixed with other things that you may not react well to. You never know just what you're taking and how and how long it will affect you.
      Some people experience a pleasant, harmless, maybe fascinating interlude, some become paranoid, frightened, and deranged temporarily or longer, like Skip. Some lose their minds for a while or longer, some write "A Day in the Life", "I Am the Walrus", and "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds."

    His real legacy should be the first rock performer who made an entire solo album, “Oar,” where he played all the instruments and wrote all the songs by himself. Worth checking out even tho it isn’t extremely colorful. More sepia tone.

    • @mb6666
      @mb6666 2 года назад

      John mayall-Blues alone, probably not considered “rock” but I think it was ‘67. Really like the Oar album

    • @mcbillygoat
      @mcbillygoat 2 года назад

      @M B You mean…
      The Blues Alone is a 1967 electric blues album recorded by John Mayall on which he recorded all the parts himself, with the exception of percussion which was provided by longtime collaborator Keef Hartley.
      With Skip Spence, he played every single instrument on the album.

    Books of Moses. It sounds as if it should be an old blues or gospel song (trad. arr.), except that the lyrics are mostly unintelligible. The banging in the background sounds like Moses himself chiseling words onto the tablets. Like many other songs on Oar, Books of Moses sounds both familiar and strangely alien at the same time.
