    My neighbor was a ford guy...he also taught me the trade back when I was in my early years.... kept me out of trouble..His three boys all had Mustangs....2 had the "Shelby Mustangs" and the youngest had a Boss 302...How I miss those days and the sounds of those cars!!!

    My dad has a 1970 boss 302, story is he’s known his mechanic friend for 50 years, his friend went out to Nebraska on a trip to buy two cars from a hoarder, the hoarder had a boss 302 and a 67 gt 350 in a barn and they were covered in their own original parts so that you couldn’t see them, the mechanic bought them and brought them back to Indianola Iowa which is 15 minutes south of the capital of Iowa, there the boss 302 sat for 5 years slowly being put together as a side project, every time my dad would go to see his friend he would eye out the car on the side and eventually my dad bought it from his friend, they made a good deal and my dad made money from it and it reminds him of his childhood, it shall become mine when my dad passes away, but for that sake, I hope he doesn’t leave this earth for a long time, it’s not about the value of the car so much as it’s the memories it’s made for me and my dad together, it’s all numbers matching original parts, 50 year old Polly glass gt tires on it still, the bias plys that came out on it, grabber green with a shaker scoop hood, we love the car and it won’t leave the family in my life time

    The 1970 Boss 302 was the car to beat on the track! Pernelli jones set a record in the boss in 1970 at laguna sega, and it wasnt broken till 2007, by another mustang. It was unmatched. Beautiful cars. Want one so bad.

Guilliano tribute was special to mention and Stefan makes dreams come true, and then some. I can’t begin to tell you how happy it makes me to see how happy you are and what Kowalski means to you and us all. Love '70 Boss 302's, and that one appears factory optioned perfectly to my tastes as well. Great to see a shaker on it. Fairly rare also is the Deluxe interior door panels. Many if not most Boss 302's only have the plain looking standard door panels. This car looks incredible to be coming out of such long storage. Another great one to look forward to!

    NICK!
    That Boss 302 is amazing! A time capsule, and a well protected one looks like. It makes you sort of an auto archaeologist to be able to take it apart, fix it and return it to service. I dig it.
    This episode is just wall to wall warm and fuzzies. Everything is wonderful at Nick's right now seems like.
    'Tis the season! I just kept smiling while watching all the way through.
    Even Video Dude's hokey sound effects during mail call are getting to be hilarious. :-)

      Be careful talking like that. An archivist will come in and quaranteen the artifact ..
      Don't laugh ..
      I'm serious (well??, maybe:)
      I was watching a vid and a badly damaged genuine 1964 Hemi block was dug out of the ground and one of the commenters pointed out it belonged to a drag racer from the era (I can't remember who) and that it was an artifact that needed restoration to preserve the history of 1960s American culture. He advocated it be that it be cleaned and stabilized to prevent further degradation and put into climate controlled storage. He was completely serious. Maybe he has a point. This survivor Mustang is making me worried where the hobby is going.

    In 1972 my best friend got a 1970 Boss 302 Mustang, green. It held it's own pretty well in local daily driver drag races. It's demise came when an 18 wheeler was in the left lane to turn right. My buddy didn't notice the big rig had it's right blinker on. I saw the blinker but he didn't understand what I was yelling about till it was too late, the back tires of the trailer ran right over the hood of the Mustang. With the insurance money he got a little Austin-Healey Bugeye Sprite.

    Nick, my Roadrunner shifter was different.
    Retention mechanism is the same, but the
    upper part, was about 1.5 feet long, and
    the 3 arms were also longer. About another
    inch. It was about 6 inches from first to
    third, and over a foot from 1 to 2.
    I had a friend that had the old-style Competition
    Plus, and we switched out the upper part, which
    was as long as yours. 1 inch, 1 to 3, and 3 inches
    1 to 2.
    That car had an open diff, and smoking out in
    first and second, you could cover the non-smoked
    patch, with a piece of regular (8.5 X 11) paper.
    (The gap between the two burn-out spots.)
    I loved that shifter! Had a customer in Hawaii,
    had a Corvette, with a Comp Plus shifter. He
    could NOT get it adjusted, either could the boss.
    "Give me a #2 Craftsman 6 inch Phillips. And, a
    pair of needle nose pliers." 20 minutes later, the
    customer said it had NEVER shifted that well.

    • @nickpanaritis4122
      @nickpanaritis4122 5 лет назад

      Steve S. Yes, you have to know how shifters work and work the levers. Good stuff Steve.

  • @SixSpeedSS
    @SixSpeedSS 5 лет назад +1

    That shifter shim locking tab retention design was also used on '71 340 4spd Dusters. Years ago I owned 2 different ones, and if you changed handles around, which is common in the A bodies and others nowadays, that shim lock tab would stop working like you show'd and the handle would come right out or be loose trying to walk up and out all the time. From a positive standpoint, the mopar Hurst shifter boxes were all Super Shifters minus the adjustable positive stop bolts. I had a '72 Rallye Challenger with a 440-6 4spd swapped in, and it had a bolt on shorty console Ebody type Pistol Grip handle bolted to a Super Shifter or other model Hurst shifter box that had the separate little Red lever for putting it in reverse. The reverse lockout type feature looked awesome and racy like some vintage early Pro Stock or the like racer, but in real street driving the little seperate reverse lever was a pain, and stiff in action due to its low leverage short length. One of the deviations from stock I might try if I can ever get another mopar musclecar is that I always wanted to see if I could create a more durable positive set of shifter rods. I recall some of the race shifters on certain apps coming with straight rods, with better no play ends. As I recall the production rods have some bends to them which can allow deflection, and they tend to have a tiny bit of play at the ends, sometimes. One of those ideas I never got around to while driving the cars back then, but always felt if I put some thought and time at it I might really be able to get that shifter feel precise on a whole other higher level than just OE, and they were fine stock. Just when looking under the cars and adjusting I recall thinking I could do this better.

    • @nickpanaritis4122
      @nickpanaritis4122 5 лет назад +1

      SixSpeedSS. That is correct. Knowing how the shifters work. Good stuff.

    I believe the spring for the clutch on the pedal box assy is to lighten pedal pressure. Its a mechanical compensator spring. With the pedal box in the car and the clutch disconnected, the spring causes the clutch pedal to go straight to the floor. You have to lift it back up until it is over center to connect the pushrod. Clever engineering that!
    The whole setup is quite good but let down by completely inadequate clutch. Every 440 I've ever driven with a manual and SDP clutch slips very badly after a few hard starts. I've never driven a manual Hemi but all the road tests back in the day complained the clutch slipped. Twin plate is the way to go. The compensation spring will help with the heaviness.

    • @nickpanaritis4122
      @nickpanaritis4122 5 лет назад +3

      ThePaulv12. True, when the clutch rod is disconnected, just touch the pedal and it swings down to the floor with pressure.

    • @ThePaulv12
      @ThePaulv12 5 лет назад +2

      @@nickpanaritis4122 I don't like those clutch pressure plates with weights on them either. Twin plate is the go for our use. Pedal pressure isn't like the old days and they hang on and last. I hate clutches that are marginal.

      @@nickpanaritis4122 l figured that...the impecable attention to detail told me that...but we'll see....l'm a South Florida boy, our roads are either over crowded or heavily policed (sometimes both) & air quality is poor - warm with high humidity...up there l know you have plenty of open road & cool "crisp" air...you take a Mopar into those kind of conditions - it won't be back till it needs gas money

    This is what reality TV ought'a be - good smart people doing hard but fun things... quality things. Inspiring people.
    I try to make my channel about that too.
    Why wasn't I a MOPAR fan?! Head-slap. Nick, you've got me pining for my hotrod days. Lol
    But I still love my Chevy memories. And hazy old Polaroids.
    Take care,
    Rusty

    Nice Boss Mustang! I had a Boss 302 and i suggest if you freshen the engine the first thing to do is throw the stock pistons as far away as far as you can. The skirts crack. The rest is pretty tough. With a mild cam and a smaller carb they love to be shifted at 6500 to 7000.

    In HS a friends older brother actually skipped buying a nice AAR Cuda for like $2500 back in the mid/early 70's because the shifter handle almost came off on him during his test drive. I'f only he'd known how simple the fix was and how minimal the problem was and quick to correct. Instead he bought a '73 SE Charger with a 400. Oh how he wished 10 years later when I came along explaining the issue,........how he wished he'd bought the AAR Cuda.

    BOSS 302 there will probably be a surprise in the sump I found broken off piston skirts in mine it was a common fault also worn valve guides and cracked valve spring shims which where then made locally it also kept blowing clutch plate,s due to the power and it ended up with a hays pro comp clutch setup parts where very hard to get in the u.k. everything cost a fourtune nice to see the car though.
