Agreed! However, Jack's capture of this insect is not only brief, but he appears to maintain a gentle and cautious handling of the insect during the vid. It seems unlikely that he'd display any sort of ill will against this lil creature.🦂/🪰
Ok I grew up in Florida, and spent a lot of time outside. I camped with the Scouts and church group. I hunted insects to feed pet lizards. And I never heard of a scorpion fly. Interesting. Thanks.
You crack me up. "At the end of that elongated equinesk nozzle. They've got these little mouth parts that" *makes suckling noises* "chew and suckle the uh delectable cuisine." 😂😂😂
Here in Finland we have these things called 'Panorpa communis' They come in summer in huge numbers right into my backyard. They're about twice the size compared to that Scorpion Fly and also only the males have the Scorpion -like tail. First time they kinda freaked me out because for 38 years i haven't seen not one before until i moved here.
Hi Jack great video i did learn something new i did not know what they ate or what their job was now i do so thanks. now i get to tell you something you may not know. that bent tree that was at the beginning of the video is a sign of the Sasquatch. it likes doing this to trees they will bend them down and either jam them into the ground or put another tree on top of it. we do not know why they do this yet but they make all kinds of stick formations. i have over 30 years researching these creatures and i have seen three so far.
@@NavyCook08 it could also be a soror wasp or blue flower wasp, whatever it is, my uncle warned me not to go near them as they have a mean sting, he said it felt like a red hot needle going in ur skin
That was cool Jack. You're very entertaining. I didn't know all that about the scorpion fly. I really enjoyed this episode, and I'm looking forward to next Friday's episode. Thanks for the video Jack. Happy New Year!
These guys are so metal looking, even if harmless, and I think it's amazing how important they are to forensic entomology, from my understanding. By the way, I know this is odd, but I think it'd be cool to find clothes moths in the wild ? From what my source (a book) states, they like wool cause it contains keratin, which is in bones, and they normally eat bones. I just think that's metal.
When i was young some strange insect flew into my living room, it was alien to me someone instantly slapped it with a shoe, its the only one ive seen and not seen one again, it was 3 or 4 inches long super thin black body orange legs and wings im in UK but not a common insect to us any chance youd know what it was? it was like a cranfly with Wasp features looked like it could sting.
Oh heck naw lol Revelation 9:5-11 (KJV) And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

Sorry, I’m just focussed on that poor Scorpian Fly’s futile efforts to escape Jack’s iron-fisted grasp! 😳

Thank you, Jack.

Flying squirrel, flying fish, flying ant, flying scorpion(AKA, the John Holmes of the insect world!)! What's next, flying bear?
Pretty cool stuff!!
They definitely are attracted to decaying meat. I recently saw some feeding on some chicken livers somebody had left out on my local fishing pier.
As much as I am outside in the woods, how have I NEVER noticed this?
This one got a little weird there at the end my friend. You got a little too worked up there.
3:50 for a sec there, i thought i was watching steve the crocodile hunter (may he rest in peace)
Florida???? watch out for cultists, be sure to wear red to appease them

Scorpion flies rare in eastern Australia. Commoner in Western Australia.
I typed "dumb ways to die" into the search bar and this video came up as third 😭
😂
While that net might or might not help catch the fly, it will help you fight Aghanim.
So why didn't a scorpion fly ever come up on any of the procedural shows? Not on Bones, or NCIS, or any of the others? Learn something new every day!!
One could even say that they are the Hagfish of Mecoptera. 😉
Wow , is that a new kind , I've been on earth 52:yrs never everrrrr seen this ????? What's going on. !!!!???
Have a grt 2025 j man. 🎉❤🎉

🧟🦟💀
Good question! It can depend on species but it generally takes a few weeks from egg to adulthood
