@@beardymcbeardface69 since the development of Atrax / Hadronyche antivenin in the early 1980s not a single human has died in more than 40 years despite hundreds being bitten. Sure I think he is brave but my respect for him is mostly because he takes these calculated risks specifically to quash the fear mongering and cruel "burn it with fire" nonsense that surrounds many medically significant animals.
NOT a fact - I have handled dozens of tarantula species hundreds (thousands?) of times which have the same (mygalomorph) fang mechanics & venom delivery system & which are much larger & more powerful than Atrax robustus I have fed them everything from mice to small snakes & goldfish & pieces of raw steak - they seek the path of least resistance & when your toe is offered up & the nail proves impenetrable the fangs will instantly locate the soft flesh next to it, puncture it & deliver venom
Utter nonsense. A spider of this weight will not have the strength to pierce through a nail. It would simply push its body upwards whilst trying to penetrate downwards.

I remember asking you in a comment two years ago to handle the funnel web spider. And you finally did. You really do have balls of steel, not many would do that, even for an educational purpose.
I was blown away by the results of a study done in Western Australia by a university. A young scientist pegged out a plot in bushland and noted all the flora and fauna, included was a female funnel web in her den which she branded so she tell it apart from others. After many years of monitoring the plot and noting changes in plant and animal life she eventually retired but the plot study was passed on to a new young scientist. A few years into the study she sought out the retired original scientist and informed her that the spider had died (was actually killed by a small wasp that lays its eggs in the spider). The spider was 52 yrs old, I had no idea any species of arachnid would live anywhere near that long.
@@robbiemccormack744 you have the Northern Tree Dwelling Funnel Web in North Queensland. There are a few species of them so would be surprised if they're not in WA.
I'm 8th gen Anglo Aussie. I trace my direct ancestry back to the first fleet (Your mayflower) and my ancestral grandparents where the very first to settle the Hawksbury River region, today, on Sydney's northern outskirts. Subsequently I grew up in Karingai Chase national park as my father did and his father before him going all the way back to year dot. There are two "Funnel Web Centrals" as you put it, Perhaps 3 if you count Katoomba in the blue mountains and they are the Royal nation park on Sydney's southern edge and Kuringai chase national park on Sydney's northern edge. Subsequently and as there are only a handful of houses in the park, not a lot of people have been so closely raised from infancy with funnel webs as myself and this against the framework of me not just being outdoorsy but also a plumber throughout my adult life and I could not even begin to guess how many close encounters I, like my father and grandfathers, have had with the Sydney Funnel Web. So in saying all that, while I recognise and admire both your knowledge and skill with handling animals, that was sincerely not smart, mate. They are, as you say, famously aggressive and that one could have turned at any moment. Funnel webs, particularly male funnel webs are my normal, Im a fifty three year old man who has been around them his whole life and though I have had many on my body through circumstance, I would never purposely do what you just did. - Not with a male funnel Web. Nope. Cheers.
Agree 100%. I grew up in Sydney and have encountered many Funnel Webs around the garden where I lived. There was a lot of bush rock which they love. When we found them we'd put them in a jar with some damp cotton wool and take them up to Hornsby Hospital and from there they'd go to the Reptile Park in Somersby and be milked for antivenom. When putting them into a jar it was always with a very long stick, my hands never went anywhere near them. I have a very healthy respect for these creatures and seeing this video made me angry at the lack of respect it also makes me wonder just why he felt a need to physically handle one. I'd rather be a live chicken than a dead hero.
@@adypowell7759 Yep. RUclipsrs, eh? Lol. Hornsby, St Ives, bothl prolific funnel web habitats, and both on the edge of the park just like Avalon, Bilgola Plateau Newport, Mona vale, Chruch Point, Terry Hills, all the way up to Hornsby. Infact, from decades of plumbing in all those suburbs I would say that Bilgola and Hornsby would be the worst suburbs for them in Sydney. Cheers, mate.
You got me there. Family came over on the 3rd fleet 1791 from County Cork. Grew up in Church Point backing onto Kuringai thru the 70's and 80's and then Bayview where they were always around. I have had more than a few close encounters I could have done without. Same with red bellies and death adders. Yes, Steve was way too comfortable around wild animals . . . I'm reminded of the time when in the African bush. Steve spotted a pride of lions relaxing in the shade on a hot day. Steve said to his crew to hang back while he snuck up on the pride to what looked like maybe 75', when he then jumped up and said "g'day" to the lions. The lions reaction was hilarious, they were clearly startled but Steve lived to tell the tale. Swimming so close to rays, within reach of a whipping tail [a reflex action when feeling threatened] was just asking for trouble. Steve should have known better. Loved the guy and what he did to promote the appreciation of and conservation of wildlife but it was only a matter of time before 'pushing the boundaries' brought him unstuck [oops, no pun intended]
He's a selfish clown. Why bother the little guy by having actual human contact? For clicks? That's not how someone who actually cares about wildlife acts.
I got bitten by one when traveling in Australia. It was like a big animal bumped into my arm, very painful and a lot of swelling in just a few minutes. After that I got really sick, cold sweat, nausea and close to becoming unconscious. The pain stayed and even affected my other arm for six months. About ten years later I had an injury in the same arm and nerve damage, when they tested the nerves they asked if I had a previous nerve damage. Scary..
I almost passed out watching this, didn't realise I was holding my breath! You are amazing with you empathy with all the creatures you handle, certainly educating many of us. Keep up the incredible work.
Know your not fearless Jack, hence the shaking hands which is a healthy thing to be, but man you have Cajonas bugger than Coconuts. Bet it was a relief to finally finish your narration and place that bad boy back on the Forest floor. Hats off to you my friend Awesome show.
Buddy in Australia we respect funnel webs you just don't mess with them, if you get bitten you better get your ass to hospital ASAP, they are not misunderstood they are aggressive and make no mistake they can kill you, the two things you just leave alone thats a Sydney funnel Web and the brown snake both have killed people they are 2 of the deadliest creatures on earth so don't do stupid things like this fool for RUclips likes if you see them quietly walk away and notify the police so they can be caught and put back in the bush
Wait, who is this Miss Understood? Is that the spider’s name? But your lack of correct punctuation makes me think that you just lack the education to know how to spell "misunderstood." How can anyone take you seriously when you have the writing skills of a seven-year-old?
@ no, sweetheart, there are no spiders named "miss understanding" anywhere in the wild. Maybe someone named their pet that. The word is "misunderstanding," as anyone over the age of eight should know. When you type completely wrong words, it leads to…misunderstandings. Correct use of language - including correct punctuation - vastly increases the ability of others to understand what you write. And our foot-long blue-headed centipede will make you cry like a little girl should one bite you. Diamondback rattlesnakes will kill you if you don’t get to a hospital for antivenom. Our coral snakes can be deadly, too, so maybe don’t dismiss the venomous wildlife of other harsh environments. Or, to put it your language (something a seven-year-old child would write), "Are sneks r danejurus jus lyk os trail yas sneks. Dont miss understand wut eye rite, imbecile." (Sorry, I realize that multisyllabic words are hard for the uneducated.)
As someone that has come across many male Atrax Robustus, I can only say that this is stupid behaviour. This species can strike in an eye blink; when you are handling one like this, you are relinquishing control completely and relying on a notoriously defensive, highly venomous creature to not bite you. This guy deserves a Darwin award.
What's up! Just saying... you are absolutely insane but a fearless guy!!😂 This vid really has shaped my view of the sydney funnel web spider that they aren't just mindless killers rather just trying to survive🌹🕷

Jack, you’re the GOAT. That takes balls! The Brazilian wandering spider was impressive but handing the aggressively defensive Funnel web just raised the bar. Like some others have said, taking a bite from either spider for science would elevate you to arachnid god level but then what? That’s the highest mountain you can climb with spiders. You’d have to start taking bites from ruthless snakes and great white sharks. 🤣🤣🤣 You could retire now and still retain your title as the best. Respect man! 🏆
Wow what a find! Congrats on tracking down an elusive spider like that. He's bigger than I expected! It's a dangerous gig handling a candidate for world's most dangerous spider but you were calm and luckily so was your new friend.
Jack, YOU ARE CRAZY.... But thank you for all you do. I was SUCH an arachnophobe before I started watching you and Spencer, but a Sydney??? Damn, I was SO STRESSED for you as I watched this and could tell it was a bit stressful for you, but what an awesome specimen! Almost felt sick, but again you came through with helping to dispel the myths of these creatures being ultra aggressive. Poor little guy, just trying to live his best life but has to deal with mites. Keep up the great work!
Well actually, it's the female funnel-web spider that's known to be way more aggressive. The male that Jack caught showed no signs of aggression whatsoever. As someone who plays with spiders, Jack knew that the spider would most likely play nice. Nonetheless, I would not touch a funnel-web even if it rolled onto its back asking for a belly rub 😱
No actually 10 minutes worth of quick research and reading and you will learn that the female is more aggressive towards the male in some mating situations but in just overall general aggressiveness towards anything else, it is the male that you need to be the most worried about. The male is also much more likely to be encountered than the females are, because they go out searching for females, while the female is pretty much just a "stay at home mom" so to speak. Also Jack got EXTREMELY LUCKY to have just somehow found what is probably the only non aggresive male sidney funnel web ever seen and i would bet EVERYTHING that he can not find 2 like that in a row or handle 2 separate males like that in one day. To be honest what he did in this video was EXTREMELY STUPID. I mean just above and beyond stupid. There's not even a word good enough to describe it and lets just pray that this one VERY RARE instance of that species being calm and "safe" to handle doesn't give some young kid or anyone else the idea to go try to pick up one of those damn things. 😏
Used to be so.phobic of spiders till I started roofing. Then I ran into them so often that I had 2 choices keep screaming till I pass out every day or man up wouldn't touch it but it's cute
When he finds his mate: "hey babe, I had this surreal thing that happened to me, some bloke picked me up and kept talking at this box. Bizarre, kinda took pity on him".
I've lived in Sydney my entire life and I gotta say this guy has BALLS. handling a wild funnel web, there's a lot of dangerous creatures here but the funnel web is one of those creatures that you REALLY don't want to fuck with. thank god he got a calm one. And while I do agree with the message of this video, the fact that his hands are shaking so much during every shot of him handling this spider should give you a good idea of just how dangerous these little dudes are.
I live in NSW. How the F does he have "balls"? Is that balls? Its foolish and reckless playing Russian roulette with your life like that. For what purpose? What's the benefit by putting it in your hand or on your arm? Any scientific reason? They have one of the most toxic and potent venom in the animal kingdom. They have a reputation for been aggressive. Venom that specifically to shut down your vital organs and nervous system and neurotic function. Ballsy? If i put my head in jaws of dangerous creature like a saltwater crocodile and you saw me would you say gee that guy has big balls or would you say look at that bloody idiot can you believe what he's doing whats he thinkin? If ran across the train tracks Infront of a fast on coming train you'd say "this guy's got BALLS"? Whats the logic in putting it in the palm of your hand making it crawl on your skin? Whats the benefit? Any benefit? Absolutely nothing other than showmanship, showing off. Boasting. Alot of social media influencers have died for views as a result of dumb stunts. If he died people would say he got the "Darwin award" he earned it bc it was a totally avoidable death. What for? Hey everyone look at me at what i just did. Thats BALLS is it? How old are you? Are you still in high school? You know the experts and scientists and the trained people who milk the spiders for making anti venom they would never ever do that. Whats the point? Big balls picking up funnel webs let them touch him. Oh yeah real big. Its not like a venomous snake were you can pick it up by the tail if your an experienced and trained in handling them and keep it away from your biting a body part at a distance. Its a spider. Small creature. Cant pick it up by one of its legs. That was unnecessary life threatening stunt. Especially funnels webs theyre known to strike just by getting too close to them. Like they're most likely to bite you if you let it touch you. Balls ? You encourage this bloke to do sht like that. Especially if it bites him and he has pre existing heart condition. Their venom works quickly too. No guarantee he'll make it even if he has doctors right there with him. Gives the wrong idea. Kids could watch him think they can have" big balls" by copy him. If your a real man comfortable in your own skin you know you got real balls why feel the need to prove it or take risks like that? He shouldnt have done that. He might try it again one day and won't be so lucky. The spider is so unpredictable. Funnel webs are known for their bad temper so here let me pick it up and put it in the palm of my hands just to see what happens. that much of a fool. BIG BALLS oh wow im easily impressed by reckless disregard for your own life picking up a funnel up putting it literally on your skin. Im gona hop in my sports car do 200km speeding onto the wrong side of the road too and after ive drink a bottle whiskey. Thats big balls too aint it? Nah? Its as dangerous as it gets but. Whats difference? Nothing beneficial or educational about picking them up touching them, should be the opposite. Baffling how you think that guy has BALLS for pickin up a live funnel web. He knows its male too, they inject more venom and its bit more toxic than female as if they weren't toxic enough, and venom thats also more deadly for mammals and primates including humans. Yeh balls but no brain. Its why most aussies are all freaking out he just done that. Hes not an aussie either. Aussies know better. He dosnt deserve any praise for that act. Putting himself on the self endangered list. Whats next hes gona pick up a box jellyfish too put it hs bare skin? Thats havin balls now. What did anyone learn from him putting it on himself? Thats hardly educational. Nice to see you think he has BALLS though mate. If he was showing a crowd of people or teaching kids everyone would say dont ever do what he just did kids, ever! Nobody imitate this person. Do not touch them or put them on you. Even the guy admitted his heart was racing. A bite could cause a heart attack. BALLS yeah right 😅
There’s a cool spider channel - Dave’s Little Beasties - and he has lots of Sydney Funnel Webs. I mention it just because…yeah, that’s definitely a Sydney Funnel Web 😳😂 shiny black legs, almost matte black abdomen, clearly able to see the spinarets at the rear… Dave is an expert in handling and caring for spiders but he doesn’t make a point at handling them with his hands. You’re a legend, Jack. Another one for the books
@@griffinc3263 I’ve watched videos where he’s handling and rehousing funnel web spiders that look like the spider in this video. They behaved completely differently than that one. Fast, frenetic, defensive. But this old spider that had mites on it was probly on its last couple weeks
@@ThePollaton hard to choose a favorite from me. He’s got so many beautiful spiders. I do remember camera lady giggling in that video. Dave’s just so calm and fatherly towards his animals lol. But tbh I really liked his emperor scorpion video. Made me see how cool those things are. They move almost robotic-like and seem to be very inquisitive, like a jumping spider. Whereas spiders, aside from jumpers, are almost exclusively reclusive and try to avoid contact, those little guys were all out and about looking around and trying to get out of their containers, like little kids lol. And absolutely not aggressive whatsoever
While it's really stupid to do, it's relatively safe if you really know what you're doing. Spiders don't really like to bite into the ground they're walking on. So that's unlikely to happen by itself. Still handling a creature like that doesn't have any positive outcomes while having the most negative sides you can imagine. Definitely not something you should do.
@BlackFire69 Well he is basically playing roulette with a unchecked firearm. It might be loaded and it might not. But is it worth finding out? Having the spider in the jar can teach enough. Not to mention the risk to the spider itself, accidentally dropping, squashing etc. if something caused the handler to be startled
Another excellent video with great content. I like these in-depth videos on a singular species. Did you happen to see any Litoria sp. or turtle frogs while down under?
Been watching you for the last year and I really respect the way you put everything across. I'm thinking that you're the only person I've seen handling a Funnel Web. Mate you've got balls if Steel !!

Man your videos have helped me so much in getting over my fear of spiders (or at least to a place where im comfortable coexisting with them) and im infinitely grateful for that
The Funnel-web Spider: The Funnel-web Spider has always been the Jekyll and Hyde of Australian arachnids. It is very large, (though smaller than other Australian species) very ugly, highly venomous and sometimes aggressive. However, it also possess one of the sweetest and most melodic singing voices of the entire insect kingdom and are generally jolly and good natured when they’re not busy killing something. It’s a real treat hearing them every Spring and Summer morning singing away joyfully from the tops of fences and roofs across suburbia, greeting the sun with their light hearted tunes before scurrying away back to their cosy burrows. You can also often hear them warbling a merry little refrain to itself as it carries off someone’s cat or Schnauzer (its favourite treat) down into its lair. It’s hard not to love them! There are 40 different species of Funnel Web Spider such as the Bankstown Blue, Southern Fluffy, Melbourne Green Silky, the Royal Northern Tiger and the Red-banded Jumping Goliath as well as a wide variety of “boutique” hybrids like the Gorgeous Baboon and the very popular Springer Roughie and Hungry Mo to name but a few. Most breeds can be domesticated after a fashion and the display hosted by the Australian Funnel Web Breeders Society at the Sydney Royal Easter Show is always well attended with the petting zoo being a popular Easter treat for kiddies of all ages. However, due to some unfortunate past experiences, the event is always scheduled so it doesn’t coincide with important dog, cat or reptile shows... From, "Australian Wildlife, The Shocking Truth!" Google it up its a very funny book! "Everything in Australia will kill you! Whether it grows, swims, flies, crawls, slithers, hops or glides etc; it will either kill you, kill you then eat you, “violate” you kill you then at you, or just settle for laying its eggs in your brain!"
A new species of Funnel Web spider has been discovered much bigger and more deadly. Scientists have named the 3.54-inch-long species Atrax christenseni, with a nickname of "Big Boy." Common Sydney funnel-web spiders, in comparison, can grow up to nearly 2 inches.
I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU ACTUALLY HELD HIM WHAT THE HELL, JACK?! Seriously, I've never seen or even HEARD of someone handling one. You're right, that one appeared much less defensive than any I've seen in other media, but still... WHAT THE HELL, JACK?! 10/10 will watch again and show friends
Great vid. Despite their reputation for being deadly, there have only been a total of 13 recorded deaths from them. My ex, a nurse, told me of a 8yr old boy who was air lifted to hospital after getting bitten 3 times - the hospital did not have the antivenom, so was transported to the next hospital. Total time from bit to anti venom was around 4 hrs. No problems. In saying all that, I wouldn't want to find one in a shoe!
That’s what I get for being cocky earlier, I was dead certain it wasn’t a funnel web. 🤣 Anyway, greaaaat video as always, handling a male funnel web requires a huge pair of balls.
i asked this of the other channel that recently uploaded a FW handling. Would you have offered to pay the "n" times $1000 a vial antivenom with n being an unknown between 5 and 10 vials ? Would you have paid the $5000-$10000 but ambulance and hospital stay ? Or would you have just not uploaded the vid and lied to the hospital as to how it happened ?
most Funnel web or snake venom treatments have a non-medicare cost of between $3k and $10k per dose. I've had friends who needed 3-5 doses to save their beloved dog. It's not covered by medicare for most non residents or pets. Take that into consideration. you could end up with a $30-50k medical bill. Which, admittedly, might be cheaper than a basic MRI for an American.
As an Aussie i feel myself lifting my feet up off the floor whilst watching these kind 9f vids and I've had snake slither between my feet out in the bush. I had boots on at the time
It's possible but I don't think so. Threat posturing and attempting to bite continues after the milking is done. This particular funnel web is legitimately a chill animal and was handled in the same manner as any other spider. Spiders don't actually want to bite everything they see because then they need to make more venom. Think about it like this, Jack's going to have a very hard time getting a funnel web from a milking centre. They won't want to part with a life saving animal to sponsor some RUclipsr's whims. Nor would they think using antivenin on Jack because he freehandled a funnel web is a good idea. So it would have to have been caught in a home or from the wild. I see what you mean though about it being uncannily gentle but let's be real here people only post the bit with the action, not the bit where the spider is chillin.
I stayed with mates in NSW (lm from SA)... Slept on the floor in a sleeping bag. In the morning l told my mate his tap was dripping all night... He went searching the house frantically.. Found a male Funnel Web in the laundry.. they tap their legs to attract females!!! Now l know!!

Fun fact: Those adorable FANGS will go THROUGH your toe nail.
Sleep well.
😮
NOT a fact - I have handled dozens of tarantula species hundreds (thousands?) of times which have the same (mygalomorph) fang mechanics & venom delivery system & which are much larger & more powerful than Atrax robustus
I have fed them everything from mice to small snakes & goldfish & pieces of raw steak - they seek the path of least resistance & when your toe is offered up & the nail proves impenetrable the fangs will instantly locate the soft flesh next to it, puncture it & deliver venom
Utter nonsense. A spider of this weight will not have the strength to pierce through a nail. It would simply push its body upwards whilst trying to penetrate downwards.
Iv got ones that are as big as bird eating spiders they are very very hard to kill, i was actuly wrestling with 1 and i myself a fit male couldnt split it in half with a shovel@@kingy002

That's amazing, the females are known for being long-lived spiders!

You got me there. Family came over on the 3rd fleet 1791 from County Cork. Grew up in Church Point backing onto Kuringai thru the 70's and 80's and then Bayview where they were always around. I have had more than a few close encounters I could have done without. Same with red bellies and death adders. I remember doing a landscaping job in Bayview opposite BYRA yacht shed and we dug into the biggest nest I have ever seen. Literally hundreds of them all sizes. Had to brake out the mower petrol that day for some serious napalming.

Yeah, too close to the whipping tail with a barb on it. Great nature man.
First time i've ever seen someone handle a funnel web like they're kittens, you are a man of steel. Bravo Jack.
You are a boss! Love your content Jack!

Australia isn't insanely dangerous. At least we don't have Yogi Bear & Boo Boo stealing our picnic baskets.🤔🐻

No…we do however have BoBo Bowen stealing our energy security…
Eh we dont either. Here if Yogi and Boo Boo get too excited they get added to the menu.
Know your not fearless Jack, hence the shaking hands which is a healthy thing to be, but man you have Cajonas bugger than Coconuts. Bet it was a relief to finally finish your narration and place that bad boy back on the Forest floor. Hats off to you my friend Awesome show.
😂 still a little nerve wracking for sure
There's no such thing as fearless. Everybody feels fear. Bravery is not letting the fear control you.
@@DaveTexas What he said is correct. Stick to your girly animals in Texas lol
Sod off Yankee doodle @@DaveTexas
As someone that has come across many male Atrax Robustus, I can only say that this is stupid behaviour. This species can strike in an eye blink; when you are handling one like this, you are relinquishing control completely and relying on a notoriously defensive, highly venomous creature to not bite you. This guy deserves a Darwin award.
He’s just like “nah don’t feel like biting today, just leave me alone so I can mate.” Haha

You could retire now and still retain your title as the best.
Another great video Jack, thanks for sharing. Not so scary after all...but glad we dont get those spiders in Ireland though!!!

He is a total idiot! Shouldn’t be doing this gives other morons ideas to do the same.
The guy is a half wit mate 🤬

@@BlackFire69 many have died due to being brain dead
@BlackFire69 What?

The Funnel-web Spider:
The Funnel-web Spider has always been the Jekyll and Hyde of Australian arachnids.
From, "Australian Wildlife, The Shocking Truth!"
Google it up its a very funny book!
"Everything in Australia will kill you!
Whether it grows, swims, flies, crawls, slithers, hops or glides etc; it will either kill you, kill you then eat you, “violate” you kill you then at you, or just settle for laying its eggs in your brain!"
Ive never clicked on a video so fast before. 😮. You've got some balls. mate . I love to see one of these in person, they're my favourite spider ! ❤

Precisely! People think I have a loaded gun in my mouth handling this weakened and old male!
What an incredible creature
The look on your face in that thumbnail had me cracking up. 😂

From what a remember that if one bites cat or a dog it’s just a bite nothing life threatening but I could be wrong. My memory is slipping.

Yeah they're particularly deadly to primates
I can't believe you did that. Admittedly that one seems like he wants to be your pet. But these spiders are terrifying.
damn that was actually kinda scary to watch, congratulations.

That'd be a tax write off at least.
That spider's threat display is one of the most intimidating things I've ever seen. I've often wondered why I'm afraid of spiders. Now I know.
You are the next Steve Irwin.....literally.
As an Aussie i feel myself lifting my feet up off the floor whilst watching these kind 9f vids and I've had snake slither between my feet out in the bush. I had boots on at the time
It’s probably so calm because it’s the same one they brought out there to make the video with.
And right after it was milked, so no venom.
Awesome mate, thank you for another awesome video.
Yikes!
