  • Hi there friends, in today’s video we are going to rebuild our old side garage door. We’re going to give this door a much needed upgrade and even learn a new skill of reverse gold leaf gilding. I start off this project by disassembling the old door and had to make the decision of whether or not to rebuild the same style door or try and find a door that I could modify. I made a field trip to Habitat for Humanity and found a door for $40. I later found out that door required a lot more time and effort than I had expected or wanted to do for this project. My friend Marylou from ‪@MadeByMarylou‬ stopped by to help assist me in cutting down the door to fit. We ran it through the table, saw to cut it down to the right width and used her track saw to cut a section of the bottom off, making the new door size 22 inches wide by 72 inches tall. This definitely is a custom door. Once I got all the paint removed and a good sanding done. I repainted the door in a flat exterior white paint. Once all the hard work of getting the door prepped, it was time for the fun part of adding the gold leaf guild. I made a design in adobe illustrator and then sent it to my ‪@Cricut‬ Design space where I cut out a vinyl sticker for the door and I’ll add the gold leaf gilding to the negative spaces. I made sure to mirror the design so that I could add the vinyl sticker to the inside of the door, but it would be visible to read from the outside. I definitely learned a lot while gold leaf gilding. since this was my first shot at it. I went a little too heavy on the gelatin, which was the adhesive and learned the hard way that it was extremely hard to remove the excess gold leafing so I started all over again and removed the entire thing and started from scratch. All in all it was definitely a longer project than I had expected to work on but well worth it in the end. I’m so proud of the outcome and I learned a new skill while I was at it. I’ll probably still remake this door at a later time and point but at least now I have something to keep the garage weatherproof. Thank you for sticking around and watching today’s video. I would love to hear your thoughts and ways that you’ve done this differently. Let me know in the comments.
