  • News reports on the Body Count - Cop Killer Controversy.
Two months after the album’s release, a predominantly white suburban jury acquitted four LAPD police officers who had been caught on video beating African-American Rodney King. The verdict led to riots across Los Angeles. Shortly afterwards, a police pressure group called for a boycott of the record, claiming that the lyrics for Cop Killer incited violence against the police. Dedicated to the LAPD, the chorus runs: ‘Cop killer - it’s better you than me/Cop killer - fuck police brutality/Cop killer - I know your family’s grieving/Fuck ’em! Cos tonight we get even”.
Shareholders in Warner brothers, who released the record, threatened to pull out of the company. Actor and National Rifle Association president Charlton Heston made an impassioned speech to the Warners shareholders meeting, calling for Body Count to be dropped from the label. A former president of the National Association of the Chiefs of Police specifically blamed the song for the shooting of two Las Vegas police officers that July. Suddenly Body Count were at the centre of a debate on free speech and the First Amendment. Memorably, Ice-T pointed out that the song was written in character, adding: “If you believe that I’m a cop killer, you believe David Bowie is an astronaut. Others defended him by likening the song to Bob Marley’s I Shot The Sheriff (made famous by Eric Clapton).

My cousin had the original album with Cop Killer, and also the re-release with Ice-T ranting about free speech. It was a big deal to us as kids, and we were disgusted at the censorship - Which was probably more relevant to us than police brutality as middle-class white kids.
We listened to it all the time, knew all the words, sang along, and then later - he ended up being a cop! He was one of the good ones too, but unfortunately he died off-duty in a traffic accident.
R.I.P. cuz. You were a rare breed.

Remember my buddy going to the music store right after they were talking about pulling the album. He found out they had one album left. He scoured the store for an hour and a half before finding hidden in a corner under a bunch of LP's. Apparently someone else had the same idea and tried to hide the album but he found it.
The album these days are worth quite a bit with that single on it.

Been a Body Count since hearing them on Ice-T's OG Original Gangster album back in '91 and have both versions of the album w/Cop Killer and without . Even have the album cover tatooed on my left arm . Remember all the nonsense that was raised about the song and how just everybody from law enforcement .,politicians and groups were coming after Ice for the song and considering that this was months after the infamous LA Riots where the 4 officers that beat up Rodney King were found Not Guilty and Los Angeles pretty much went up in flames not to mention being an election year were looking for any means possible to shut down Time Warner to the point Ice had no choice but to pull the song off the album .IMO Ice had every right to write the song cause after what happened with the verdict of the King trial where footage clearly showed the cops beating him to almost unconsciousness and they were found not guilty and though i can sympathize with cops that actually are on the straight and narrow and were injured in the line of duty the song was about brutal cops that abuse their authority and think they have the right to take a person's life without any remorse let alone actions taken against them and after seeing some of the things that have gone on in the past few years with Travon Martin,LIoyd Green and others that lost their lives to brutal law enforcement the song is just as relevent as it was back in '92 .Ice still performs the song at his concerts though playing a cop on Law And Order SVU he still feels the same way about brutal police and until the government takes a stand against the brutal ones that abuse the authority it will continue to happen . Then again the days of the major labels putting out music like this are done and over and are more interested in putting out shitty dance music and pop radio garbage . IMO the Body Count album is a classic and a must own .

That one cop at about 2:00 says they should make music that's more about education?!?!?!? WHAT ABOUT THE BASIC EDUCATION POLICE OFFICERS SHOULD BE GETTING ON HOW TO TREAT PEOPLE IN A CIVIL AND HUMANE MANNER?!??!?!?!?!?! Yeah, there's a severe lack of education in this country, and the police are one of the main prime examples of it!!!!!!

My stepfather, black people listening to heavy metal is kind of corny, but he himself bought this album. I went into his old beat up car and got this record out and I listened to this album and listened to this album and listen to this album and that's what got me as a black person listening to heavy metal. But I will say this for the record and I think everybody needs to hear it
