Never knew stone cold Steve Austin was a underwater welder
this one was gold
Lmao 😂
Haha
Well now you know because StoneCold said so.

At dive school I remember John Paul Johnston the president of the school did an 1800 ft dive in the chamber with the Navy. Those old Navy divers were awesome to be around.
Which one was the Thursday night barrel boy
In the mid 90s I had an in depth conversation with an old Navy saturation dive supervisor and his story was that they would use goats in the hyperbarric chamber to establish the original dive tables. He said the goats eye balls would shoot out of their skulls for effect.
The Navy also offered weekend passes to Seamen that would take a ride in the chamber.
He wasn't particularly proud of this but it happened.

20 year construction welder here. This lifestyle was difficult. I cannot imagine being offshore. I always wanted to sat weld. But, too old for that now. Weld on brother. Stay safe.
Thank you for being prepared, thanks for the smart questions!!!
this is the channel for a welder i started welding 8 months ago and i like it a lot, i learn a lot from my classmates who weld better than me, i also recently hired on the best training to become a welder , I am very happy and I want to share that with you 🙏🏽

Lot of info out there. So, I'm a 53 year old retired military diver. Just want to put out some food for thought for the young guys that DON'T do there due diligence. $100 plus straight out of civilian dive school as an "underwater welder!" Unheard of. The 80's are long gone. You're a tender for a long time. Rightfully so! We all work from the deck down then back up. Make sense!? All I want to put out there is schools are like recruiters. They want to fill billets, or make money! Keep an open mind and trust your "gut" when speaking to a school "recruiter!". You're a dollar sign in the civilian world. EARNED in the military!
I am a graduate from the school, instructor and do marketing. We dont get commission and I tell prospective students the negative and positives so they can make an informed decision
@@richardjohnston2904 That's good! But I want to ask you something, respectfully... Is that why (or partially why) you became an instructor though? Because it's hard to find work unless you know people and for the work you do find, it doesn't pay much?
I'm just a Pipe welder, so I don't know anything formally but I have read a bunch about it and that's all I hear all of those things.
@@chron4986 Good Questions Chron,I was a road driver for 37 years and the stories these bright youngsters come out of school with are amazing.None of them wanna take a decent wage to start and work theyre way up.If they aren’t at top pay in 90 days. @@fuzzybutkus3951 Just curios, what's a decent starting wage? I'm skeptical because every time I've been promised a 'decent' or 'good' wage lately its usually about what taco bell starting wage is around here. Seems like a lot more skill and risk involved to make the same as a high school aged burger flipper.
As a former north sea sat diver, listen to this man, he's spitting facts.
This was a very informative video thank you pri
Great description of the trade. The helmet is transportation to the work site. Perfect. I dove commercial in Alaska from 1975 to 1990 then all over until 1995. Then a project manager. I have been very disappointed in new divers in the last few years, because they have so little work experience. No high school shop classes anymore, no wrenching or basic electrical knowledge. We often ask, did you repair your bike or lawn mower? The 7 months of school can only teach so much.
I think the question and answers were right on.
If someone was interested in learning, what would you recommend for them to have a basic understanding of? Electrical, wrenching, etc.
@@RebelTvShka Rigging. Hand tools. Rigging. More rigging. More hand tools. Drilling concrete. Tying rebar. More rigging. Strong sense of fabrication ABOVE the water.
Lots of high schools are bringing trades back, i actually just built a trade school for a high school that had welding, hair cutting, and nursing classes.
Wow! Just amazing. Very brave!
Im going to be 36 now and did really well at SMAW. I also have plantar fasciitis that won't go way. I still want to try this.

“I don’t like to use the word dangerous, I call it risk.” what he means is it’s extremely dangerous lol.
Not really, that is if you have the right equipment
Nah, I’m my line of work I tell people respect the explosive don’t fear it. As long as you’re doing everything right you’re relatively safe. It’s inherently a dangerous job, but if you know your shit you’ll be alright.
Going to school for this march! It’s preaching cool stuff
really informative, thanks.
Quick question for ya. How many of the welders that apply and pass the course go into the atlantic? And if so does the pay change? Im assuming things above water change but otherwise what are the real differences between nice gulf water and the atlantic besides the water temp that change??
Great interview!
No Client Reps. Superint. and usually a good bunch of guys on the team. Night shift is Awesome!!
I'm down for it...been welding for a little over 10 yrs...be fun to get something new

@Allyourbase1990 I agree.
The definition of danger is: the possibility of suffering harm or injury. Which this job has exponentially exacerbat3d by the depth of diving.
This guy asked why anyone would sign up for a job that has a low life expectancy. Well, back in WWII a bombers life expectancy was not high yet people did their job.
This is an inherently dangerous job and I wish he would strike reality with that. This industry needs people who know the situation. The fact that if anything goes wrong is counteracts by days of waiting is a real danger. Some people thrive in that enviroment, others don't and I don't want to work with someone who doesn't have realistic expectations of danger or is naive enough to not understand that.
Sat diving and hyperbaric pipe repair is my dream job

I live in New York city and i'm considering specializing in this welding field after I come out of welding school. Would it be a good idea in this area?
Poor guy, ur state is fuckef
I would look more at being a competent Commercial diver. you need to be able to do so much more then weld. Being able to weld is helpful, but there are dozens of different skills you learn that are just as helpful.
Just a wild guess here but I'm guessing underwater electrodes are far more expensive than standard 6013, am I correct?
Not terribly. They started making a better coating that’s harder which seals much better, but you can literally make your own wax coatings for super cheap.
A few people in my family have been ab divers, good money but all have ended up retiring between age 45 and 55 due to cumulative health effects from decompression sickness
I've got a question! Do you have female diver welders? How hard is this job for women? Thank you!
I went to CDA IN JACKSONVILLE. So much hype about this career. It’s not what you think. Working offshore. You’ll be a tender for Atleast 4 years before splashing. Made a few dives before I got out of the career. Very inconsistent work if you decide offshore. I won’t speak on inland diving because I’ve never worked it. But each hitch was sat dive job. But with my new career with the union was the way to go. Making more money in my first year than I have ever working offshore. Do your research and ask around before you decide to spend thousands on schooling for this!
what kind of welding do you do?
I really love the art of welding, it would be a dream come true getting to do off-shore underwater welding. I don't have any fears of sharks, shit environments or being in danger or living in shitty conditions, I just really love welding and $ so to get paid for something I love to do is just unimaginable for me. I was a welder for a railway for 5 years with 2 months of "in house" training, I would take proper welding training and get all welding tickets if I could afford the time and cost of the schooling.
They love money like
Been doing it for 30 years brother don't waste your time. Stay on land, have a life and make the same money.
@Zack Morgan good to know the money isn't worth it. I'm always looking for better $ and it's tough to find something better when my salary is just over $100K. Welding was one of the few jobs I could make more but I was working 16+ hours a day to make this. I was hoping underwater welding would pay more
@@MillieMuncher360 Well it doesn't pay more and you will have to work about the same amount of hours to make it. As a diver when you get off you are stuck on the boat cant do jack. Can't go to the store, cant' have a beer, no gals, stuck watching dvd movies listening to a bunch of dudes most of which you'd rather not be around until it's time to work again. I did it but if I had to do it again I would have done something else. If you do decide to go ahead with it don't work in the United States. The United States is decades behind European countries in pay and accommodations. The Gulf of Mexico is terrible and the conditions on the boats compared to the European boats is night and day. I have an agent that gets me jobs overseas I never work in the gulf anymore. Another thing you may not know is that welding underwater is not that common. Like the guy said the welds aren't strong. On just about everything they would rather bring it topside and weld it on deck and send it back down. In 30 years I've done and seen very little welding underwater. When you tell somebody you are a Commercial Diver the first thing they say is oh, you are an underwater welder. It's a common misconception very little welding going on underwater and if you get to weld in that habitat that is used very little it is exactly the same as welding out of the water nothing special.
Bruh thats perfect, i live in Louisiana and if your doing offshore then its gulf so its at Louisiana, thats great

Awesome information! Underwater welding is a young persons game.

Yea the thing is though, you will be a dive tender for years.. and unless you get on somewhere where seniority doesn't come into play, then good luck. Nice to see you guys learning though.
If you wanted to go onto saturation diving is there a height limit?
Do you need to have experience welding before you do underwater welding?
Well, I've saw a comment long ago that say "it was easier to teach welder how to dive than teaching diver how to weld"
I’m going to divers institute of tech and you need no experience in diving or welding to get accepted I have no experience and I am scared of deep waters but I want to conquer that fear and am jumping right into it
You don't just "go into" saturation.

It doesn’t take a “huge toll on your body fast”.
Deep saturation is a tiny, tiny part of the industry. Commercial diving, especially on air doesn’t “take a huge toll on your body fast”. Been a diver for ten years, what about you?
@@A_Lemon_Party Nah but most people i know that did that kind work have died, and most were young and healthy. Don't jump into it fresh outta highschool, you're gonna need some vocational schooling... Welding isn't just something you can pick up and do without training and understanding how metals and alloys bond. Sure you could get a job in a production factory welding a certain type of metal, that doesn't make you a welder. A true welder knows how to bond all metals and alloys accordingly and exactly what rod/wire/filler and shielding to use for the application. This stuff isn't a game kids...
I'd be FAR more concerned about giant squid than sharks. Squids are more aggressive than bull sharks! 😵💫
