Commercial diving is the next level to scuba diving and is the true way of making good money out of being underwater but it is the hazardous side of diving and it isn’t all that fun. It’s not for the faint-hearted neither you have to be pretty tough and it isn’t an easy industry to get into. There’s also lots you need to know about commercial that you can’t know unless you’ve been in or around the industry. Now I’m not a commercial diver but I have spent a lot of time with them so if there are any commercial boys and girls out there in the comments let us know your wisdom.
So I’m back from holiday and it seems you want to know about things to consider before going into commercial diving.

@@carsonlovrien6649 sorry for the super late reply, but for me yeah it was worth it. I love being a diver, but many/most people don't last in the industry. If you have the drive and desire to do it, it can be a very rewarding career. Becoming a diver is one of the best decisions I've ever made. I had no dive experience before I went.
I worked as a "commercial diver" at an aquarium. It was nothing like this of course, just diving 15-30 foot tanks and cleaning up shark poop all day, but since we were technically commercial divers according to OSHA we had to follow all the same rules so we had to have a standby diver at the surface. The water was so shallow the diver and standby could wave to each other and see it clearly, it was kinda ridiculous.

Did my commercial dive training when i was 17 never looked back absolutely love it, finding work is tough though!

Oh yes, the fun of chainsawing pilings off in pitch black PCB contaminated water with unknown things bumping into you. Or diving in a paper sludge tank with sulfuric acid eating the colors of your new drysuit and turning it gray.

I want to pursue this job. I know its difficult to get in to. I know it's not easy, and its dangerous. I don't have welding skills, nor do I have diving skills. The odds are greatly stacked against me, but that's fine. I am 26 years old and I finally figured out what I want to do in life. If I never get this job but I keep pursuing it in life that's also fine. Knowing what you want but never being able to achieve it is way better then never knowing what you want in life.
Do it dude! Welding under water is WAY different from topside. Theres little to more likely no welding in gulf tho

Daniel Percent it’s easier to teach a welder to dive than a diver to weld, or so I’ve heard
Go for it man, when I went to dive school I didn’t have any welding experience and I didn’t have any diving experience. I learned everything at dive school, I absolutely love my career

I'm a Commercial Diver in the USA and so far finding work has been pretty easy to find, but it is hard work and alot of hours.

@@samyakmarchande4796 study and take the asvab, i think you need a 60 to be qualified for navy diving, but its hard work at bootcamp because you will be put in a special forces division. so they will workout more and you will be trained with the seals. i think its the same for a school which is after boot. i know because i went to bootcamp for navy diver and i failed. i am going to be a diver as a civilian instead. Im going to divers intitute in october.

Went through the Ocean Corporation in Houston Texas, Had a job before I graduated as did several other people in my class.They said only 10 percent would still be in the industry after graduation and found that to be true. If you're claustrophobic , or can't handle the cold,vthis job isn't for you.I lasted 5 yrs and still do the odd jobs every once in a while.still love it and the people I worked with.

I was researching entering the field at the age of 23 - until a man I know, who was on the board of Exxon Mobile talked me out of it. I've recently retired from the safety of the medical industry and couldn't be happier about that decision.
There is one in southern England too but as you say there are not many. I was a former adqual mine clearance diver and engineer. But a lot of my shipmates did do commercial diving, working on oil rigs, welding pipelines in the construction industry. And some even went sat diving. Hope it helps.
Very informative and spot on along with so much more,I was a commercial diver on the Big Dig Boston central artery tunnel project along with the deer Island out fall tunnel,never imagined that I would drive a souped up hum vee 9 miles out in a pipe under Boston Harbor breathing mixed gas in a dry oxygen less environment when I started,so yeah it's a great job and your only as good as your last job

Love that the commercial divers exist thanks for all the hard work and nasty stuff you lot deal with. Not for me, nope. I don't have the stamina. It's good to know what one's limits are.
Diving is the process of getting to the job site.
I had to give up commercial diving not log after my son was born, he is now at University and I still miss it almost every day. Maybe it's just nostalgia and I'm forgetting the some of the crap civils jobs (working in-shore, canals, rivers, sh!t tanks etc.), or the mind-numbing boredom of some of the off-shore jobs (like on a pipe-laying barge), but I did love commercial diving.
It is expensive, especially if you do the saturation course, and it can be really difficult to get a start, but with perseverance, a bit of luck and a willingness to travel anywhere should see you through. I've gone months without a call and had up to 6 calls a day, so swings and roundabouts.
Just as a caution - getting your tickets (expensive), and getting a job (can take time and are usually short-term), are only part of the story. Be honest with yourself and make sure that diving is for you, even after paying the course fees, the number of new divers I have seen come out of the water with sheer terror on their faces (never to return to diving), because they were in a position that the dive schools hadn't prepared them for, was frightening.
However, if you do like it, in my opinion, it's the most awesome job on the planet.
Yup know 2 did course after 1 or 2 jobs packed up.
What sort of position did those new divers get put into?
@@simonluebeck8048 I'm not sure where you are from, but in the UK, when we say zero vis we mean it - absolutely no visibility whatsoever, so that. Using very dangerous tools like the underwater chainsaw (especially when witnessing someone's finger almost removed). Tunnels in reservoirs that are a couple of hundred years old and not very sable. Drill holes in chalk that can barely fit a person through the hole. Coffer dams with way too many obstructions and falling debris. Fast moving tides. Dead body's in the river Themes. The list could go on a lot longer. When I started, there were some grants available for re-training and people that had never worked with tools or even outside thought it looked good on the cover of a magazine and that chicks would love (I may have made the last bit up :) ).

When I was at DIT we had two different companies come in for recruiting. Then companies (including the one I work for now) will come in to talk to the classes and the instructors will give a yay or nay or who they should be serious with.

I was an avid recreational scuba diver for 20 years before becoming a PADI instructor. Taught for 15 years as a side gig. I enjoyed the camaraderie but it quickly killed my desire to dive for fun..
It's true that you have to trust your team topside, however you have to be able to adapt to things on the fly and be able to overcome to get the job done. It's a pretty volatile job and the end goal is to get the job done. It's very competitive in that way because if something comes up and you couldn't complete the job and they send the next diver and he manages it you've just given him favor over you. Also divers have a love hate relationship with engineers. No matter how many schematics and briefs you've seen and been through something always seems to be different once you're underwater. For those who want to be commercial divers the best skills to have as a beginner in the water is to be directionally aware even in zero vis and be able to not drop anything. Oh and try not to get tangled up in your umbilical or get it fouled up.
All of these are pretty valid points, not much glory and a lot of dirty/boring work but still nothing I'd rather be doing. (Plus one for using clips from DIT, my alma mater)

I too went to Ocean Corp in Houston and did 7 years, North Sea, Persian Gulf, North Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. But had to get out when the construction dried up. Feast or famine, especially getting a phone call at 2 am to be at the dock at 7.

Luckily I'm a Belgian Comm diver and we always work in shifts of four , Diver comes off the job, he does the comms. next job off the comm and Tender , finished tendering , you're the Stand-by. and if you're sh*t out of luck, there's another window and you get to do a second dive. 🤣. And then there's still a lot of time to practise the art of being bored 'on Stand by'...
I am doing salvage diving. Only down to a max of 30m (around here there really isn't water that is deeper than that), so we don't really get saturated which is nice. Here in Germany I got the courses for free because I was doing it in my free time at a catastrophe response unit (Technisches Hilfswerk).
With my qualification I can dive for the police and fire department if I decide to throw uni for some reason.
I learned things like underwater welding and all that and I am doing a course on blasting right now to learn underwater blasting afterwards.
I haven't actually done too much that is more than training, I have searched underwater for a few things to help the police and to find bodies, and I lifted 2 cars and a few lighter things, some of these also out of the water. Oh and I helped with a damm repair after a flood.
It's honestly a really fun hobby, but it is good to know that I don't depend on it. And I really love uni right now so that is all great.
How did you get access to training
@@spicymeatballs2thespicening As I said, in a german catastrophe response unit. The principle is basically instead of having a few professionals, you have a lot of people doing it for free, but getting free training.
Wie lange hat deine Ausbildung und alles davor (DLRG Rettungsschein und CMAS Ausbildung) ca. gedauert, bis du die erste Stufe der Ausbildung beim THW abgeschlossen hattest?
@@ruben3136 Also ich habe THW grundausbildung, tauchschein (ich habe nicht cmas gemacht das war auch ok) und Rettungsschwimmer in einem Jahr gemacht. Theoretisch schafft man das auch in einem halben Jahr wenn man sich halbwegs ranhält. Und danach war taucher 1 ein Jahr.
Well.. my studies to become an occupational therapist cost me around 95k. And its not a well paid job afterwards..
I dont think spending 30-40k to become a comercial diver is that bad. If your heart wants it, then fo it.

Fort Bovisand in Plymouth used to do the HSE courses, as a Scuba diverse you used to be able to do Basic and Advanced Underwater Explosives courses, turn up on a Friday and your crimping det’s and using Coxe’s bolt gun within an hour, can’t imagine anyone doing that noweredays, Bovisand is luxury flats now or so I understand

in the gulf of mexico it does not matter how well you do in school or how many certificates you got , you are going to be a diver tender for 3-6 years before you become a diver IF you become a diver lots of people drag up before that happens .
i know this video is a little bit old, but i figured i would leave this here for future divers in case they come across my comment. whether you are from the USA or abroad, i highly recommend attending DIT in Seattle, thats where im getting certified. their instructors are wonderful and the institute has a lot of pre grad and post grad resources to help people actually land a career

I'm pretty confident in all areas. The only thing I'm worried about is my technical knowledge. I am an advanced open water diver but I have never worked with the tools commercial divers use
Make sure your stamina is olympics level. Can’t waste any work sites time because you’re tired and need to come top side. Each job is different and you’ll usually have a good idea of what needs to be done before you go under.

Yep, I've dove in a sh!t tank near York, though I did get double-bubble and used the company's dry bag.

I was close to joining the Navy as a Diver. Now I'm a medic in the Army in Italy. Kinda wished I chose the first option.
An you got to travel to the places where there is diven or a job I mean an some times you can go for weeks with out work an other times have been working for weeks at a time
I recommend going to MDT in Santa Barbara city College, it’s cheaper, you get amazing teachers, great networking, and probably one of the best at least in the west coast
If you have relevant work experience as a fitter or welder, a diving or offshore company will usually finance your additional underwater training or offer you its own training program.

I’m a union commercial diver in the PNW. Money is better than off shore but less consistent. Not a bad trade off for most though with hobbies and other jobs.

2. No one gives a damn how well you did in school and don't want to hear your stories from there. Prove your worth on the job. don't be a shitbag
3.Back up diver = stand by diver.. your next in rotation.
4. If your in the US and plan on going offshore plan on being a tender for a few years like 5 or whatever the breakout time is right now and getting tender dives when your allowed. Companies like Chevron , Shell, Boardwalk don't even allow red-hats (under 6 months ) in the water.
5. I worked offshore & inland and shit dives are real. I still remember the smell of that waste tank at a slaughter house and it was 2 years ago.
6. If your in US avoid 30k schools like CDA and DIT unless you plan on immediately trying to go overseas with your DCBC cert..good luck. only benefit was deep water "training" of 165ft . Look at Youngs memorial or other small schools that run like 10k worked with plenty of those guys who spent 10k and I spent 30k .. same jobs.

@@prasanths4105 Sat divers require *Years of offshore experience. Atleast in the US. Get your air/gas diver card and put in the time . Make connections. This is a who you know career. Work hard. People notice.

@@prasanths4105 you need a lot of hours at various depths inlan. as well as surface decompression hours aswell which are very hard to come by. I wouldnt count on being able to get into sat school if thats your main goal. Id make it a secondary goal if the opportunity arises. And yes if you work in the US then theres no point in getting DCBC but if you want to work literally anywhere else in the world you will need the DCBC because its in direct affiliation and is recognized by IMCA who is the governing body of diving in sat diving everwhere in the world other than the US. So being from india you would have to get the certification which is affiliated with IMCA.
Diving (in underwater sites that justify it) is a fantastic activity.
Becoming a professional diver is the most effective there is to destroy the desire to go underwater.
One day it will be understood that WORK is a perversion.

Don’t care what the dangers are, I’ve always wanted to be a diver, but not just any diver. A navy diver, this is my dream job
Coast Guard, they maintain all offshore work that are navigation safety related and repair and salvage work. You would also get put overseas for humanitarian efforts.
I was an army diver and those navy guys are built different, diving for the military is hard sometimes, especially when it comes to all the pre checks and equipment upkeep, but it is an experience you’ll never regret having. Hope you made it through and are enjoying your dream !

@@iishuffle28 the first phase is always going to be the toughest phase. You don’t sleep much and they expect a lot out of you. Get comfortable in the water fast. And if you’re not good at swimming don’t force your reclass. Swim laps, get your breath hold down longer and practice “clearing” your ears a lot. Because you’ll be asked to constantly swim to the bottom of the pool. The dive sups are kinda hardcore but they do care about your character and it’ll show once you get past the first 3 weeks. All together it’s an extremely hard job. And it’s hard to even pass the training, around 88% of people fail. Hope you do get through and are ready for what you’re about to do! Get smart and get strong! Goodluck
Not worried about how dangerous it is? A recipe for disaster. Always be aware of the dangers so you can mitigate those dangers. If you are blasé... youll soon be dead. Or worse, youll kill a team mate.

I'm considering getting into Commercial Diving (I am currently a Divemaster), but as a female I have heard it can be more difficult to get work as a commercial diver than for males. Currently doing my HSE ProSCUBA course with Plymouth University (UK) and half the team are women!
Rhian, yes it can be difficult for women to get into (or at least it used to be), but not impossible. There are lots of reasons why this may be the case and it depends on the branch of commercial diving you're trying to get into i.e. Civil (mainly inshore) or oil rigs (offshore), this is an oversimplification but it will do for this.
Civil's diving can be really tough, it isn't always from a boat or a pontoon/jetty, sometimes you have to carry all your gear - bailout cylinders, weights, umbilical, tools, parts etc. - up and down inclines, carry them over long distances just to get to the dive site, couple that with 3 hours as standby diver then 3 hours bottom time and God knows how long on the surface doing other jobs. This gets drains even the toughest, fittest person after a week or so. I'm not suggesting that a woman can't do this kind of work, but dive companies have a choice of divers and they are likely to either go with people they know or someone that looks as though they can stand that kind of punishment.
Offshore diving can be a little easier (though not always), as everything is usually at hand and you are lowered and lifted from the water by a basket. This is a really really oversimplification.
To give a couple of examples that I am aware of (though I don't know either of them personally or worked with them), during the 90's I believe there was a female diver working for a Norwegian company in the North Sea, whose sole purpose in life was to video the main divers progress, now if this is true (and I have no direct knowledge that it is), she was completely useless as every diver has their own camera, I admit that I may be wrong and am doing her a massive disservice. On the other hand, I am aware of a female diver that worked for a UK company who, by all accounts, was a fantastic diver and worked for many years in the industry (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong), yet another female diver (that I did know personally), completed her course then ended up working at one of the diver training centres in the UK. I also believe that there are women working in the diving industry in the Gulf of Mexico.

I’m planning on going to that school in fall next year. Getting my associates in marine technology. Been told it’s the best school and I never heard a bad thing about it.

Can someone give me some advice . I’ve acquired a share in a boat that mines diamonds in the sea. Just to start understanding the the whole process is like to do a comercial dive course just to be able to do a dive to 20m . So it’s more for the fun of it and to just understand what’s going on underwater . Does anyone know of a good school in the Capetown region?
Don't do inland diving like I did. The pay is bad, you have to travel alot, your working hours can be random and you have to constantly compete with your coworkers. I quit after 3 years. Working underwater was actually enjoyable, it was everything else that sucked.
And when you travel, where do you stay? I want to persue this carreer i'm a welder and a scuba diver, but this kind of comments make me doubt. and if the pay isn't good anyway, then the investment and time put in won't be worth it? id love a response

I don’t know jack but from what I hear inland (where you begin your career) is usually pretty shit. But that’s just the beginning and then once your portfolio is a little bit bigger then you can get better jobs working offshore

My son just turned 17, he did scuba diving for a year and a bit at 14 but stopped because he said it was boring. He did a try out commercial diving in Belgium. He had a smile on his face but I worry…. He could potentially start at 18. I personally find that very young for such a job that does seem to need a certain level of awareness and maturity.
As a mother I am there to support en encourage him but on the other hand it is a bit scary.
Any thoughts?
I'm an 18 year old maniac too, and just talking about how it would actually feel to be in a dangerous situation, or covered in feces... That could help enlighten him. God knows us kids can be stubborn hahaha

I wish I had seen this 5 min video before I spent 20 grands on bunch of certificates. Even if you graduate top of your class, getting a job is a bit of a catch 22. To get a job you have to be a member of the pile driver's union and to be a part of their union you must have an employer. The only exception is being a veteran, in which case you can get your foot in the door but even then nothing is guaranteed.

Having read a few posts I gather most respondants are based in the States? The industry is so much bigger than USA. So it does not matter where you live as a big company will fly you half way round the world to those jobs.
Courses; they change locations and vary in cost. Go for the most reputable and safest. I started out in 84. Got my course on the government as i had the aptitude and transferable skills. Then it was Ft William and Bovisand at either ends of Gt Britain. CAD and BAD lads. Commercial and Basic air diver.
In 92 i did my Sat course. Course work was a hotel in plymouth. Practical was Haugesund in Norway. That one I paid for but 1st sat will easily pay that off. Get a career development loan. Does not have to be paid till you do the work you trained for! I paid up all the loan in one go. Bank not pleased... but so what!
Transferable skills: I was endentured (apprenticeship) as a Plater./fabrication. Also did 3x welding courses before my air diving course. That is a big bonus. But if you are a kitchen fitter/roofer/brickie taxi driver etc it will only help you between diving jobs. A lot of guys have 2nd jobs for shore life. Depends on your bank balance and state of mind. Me, i bought houses to do up in my time off.
Remuneration: it varies vastly. Best rates are unionised in Nth sea. Arabian gulf can be desperately poor. Less than 100 $US day! 😢 I have heard of guys going for nothing to fill a CV. thats a muggs attitude frankly.
I stopped after 35yrs as a diver having done Hyperbaric welding and lots of wet. But mainly construction..all over the world.
The rate would inc:
Day rate air
Hourly sat rate/hr
Weld bonus
Completion bonus
Dayly incremental rate for ppe/training/travel etc.
A lot is negotiated! Especially if you passed your coding. A bit of arm twisting goes on! But i was on about 2k a day on welding jobs. 750£ on air. But that is the higher echelon of diving and a few get there. Also highly trained NDT techs are paid well. Very few around the world.
Sex: i have known of women divers. Frankly they are wasing their time offshore. It creates too many issues! 6 guys per chamber. Close proximity and nudity all on cctv. Also as a guy, expect to carry a woman diver. Dont bitch! Its the reality! After a while they may end up in the office as a token female diver. Dont go offshore. Simple as.... Its not the job for you. Had one in OTS out if Gt YARMOUTH when they were about. She was a tryer... but usless by all accounts. Her teddy bear and panties kept getting stolen. The teddy's ransome was not paid. His head came back. Offshore humour is what i miss most. Norway by all accounts have a few women divers.
Now..I am on my last job role. Online trading. More brain than back used. Spend half my time overseas just enjoying life.
People: Which ever track you take. Be mindful of who you work for and with and where. Learn to say NO to jobs or unreasonable demands. It may keep you alive. As the industry is full of jung-ho types esp in usa. Also people who may not give a toss about your safety. A GOOD SUPV or LSS (Life supp supv) make for a better trip. Work on your reputation and work with those who have a good reputation. Team work is vital. Look after baby divers and teach them well.

Anyone interested should first watch the video of the diver wielding deep in the ocean . when a grouper the size of a mini school bus slowly sneaks up as the diver bent over its mouth slowly starts opening when the diver noticed and stood up instantly 2 second later see ya diver . Keep that job

If you're in the UK go to a UK school or NYD in Norway, some South African courses aren't even recognised in the UK. As for being bored, I've never got bored of making £600 a day. Out of a course of twelve, three might make a career out of it.

What is the best way to know if you like the job before doing it? I'm interested, but I don't want to drop $10 000 on a carrier I'm not sure is for me.
maybe try diving in ffm and drysuit gear, get a feel for being underwater. Then do a plumbing course. If both are enjoyable then it's for you.
I did my commercial dive training in Florida and it was 20 thousand in 04, I think its over 25 now. But its the best job ever especially after you break out and your not just a dive tender.

@@MORITEZZ itr really heard to get work out there now, it took me 4 months to get a job when it was booming.i was in dive school for six months because I did the dive medic course, it's only 4 just to be a commercial diver.
@@rodgerussery9681 thanks for the feedback, im actually from South Africa and theres a few schools in Cape Town that I've come across ,the fees are expensive but im willing to take the risk ,im hoping to be a underwater welder does that mean I'll have to be a tender first?
@@MORITEZZ yes, you have to start as a dive tender untill you "break out" that typically takes around 3 years. That doesn't mean you won't dive but it won't be your main job. Tenders are the grunts that take care of everything for the divers and assist them topside.
Random video recommendation in my youtube list gets a random comment from me: I've worked 'offshore' in a previous job, but my current job (commercial pilot) has many similarities: not in terms of work environment of course, but in terms of career. It's not very much like what people imagine it to be. And there are a LOT of negatives. Sure, some people land the glorious 'clear water' jobs, most slog on through the difficult, health destroying, grindy suck. I suppose it's like that in a lot of industries, and this certainly isn't a complaint. Probably more like a 'do your homework on your chosen career properly, school-age child!"
