    DD2's Dragon also had the problem of a less than ideal localization.
    Long story short, in Japanese it is clarified that this world in one without a true Seneschal, as Rothais, the last Seneshal, used his divine powers to return from the Rift and keep conquering instead of doing his work as a Senechal. The Storyteller stepped in its place, but he didn't really understood the point of a Seneshal and created a world with a "corrupted" cycle. The dragon in DD1 was always a different being (Arisens defeated by the Seneshal, or made directly by the Seneshal), while the one in DD2 is (iirc) always the same, and wants to break free from the corrupted cycle of the Pathfinder.

    • @cabellocorto5586
      @cabellocorto5586 4 месяца назад +49

      That's a very interesting bit of info. So is the ending when you kill Nex ending the cycle permanently, or is NG+ renewing the cycle? Pawns will sometimes comment that you loved the world too much to let it go, or that they were looking for you in NG+ so I'm confused what the case is. My assumption is that it is ending the cycle permanently, since it seemed Itsuno has always wanted to tell the story of transcending the cycle of life-death-rebirth since the first Dragon's Dogma.

      This actuallt answers a few questions I have
      Though it only raises one greater one
      Rothais has issues with the position of seneschal for existential reasons as he eventually comes to be aware of the watcher after, though I assume his time as seneschal was the start of it
      In this case I want to know if the watcher was always involves to some extent due to rothais's existential crisis, and of destiny and predeterminatiin has always worked as it does in 2, or if it's changed with the watchers roll
      Also just the brine as a whole. That no swimming mechanic avtuallt being the big bad eldritch abomination God it is is hilarious

      @@imaginalex5850No Feste this time around as well. The story was a little more grounded and open about people actually having knowledge how the world works. I'm still scratching my head how Phaseus compiled information about the world working on a cycle from the remnants of the civilization in Battahl and the Glintmoon Tower.
      It feels like the writing team had more to show about initially and had to cut to fit the budget (again). We barely have time to explore the volcanic area before the end. But looking at how 400+ people were credited in the game compared to 1000+ from other Capcom games, I get the gut feeling that the team had to do with what they had. Even the marketing for the game was very barren until the last week.

    5:30 aside from Gran Soren, the area where you fought that second dragon is the remains of Bluemoon Tower, and it's interesting to note that Vernworth is more or less built on top of it and then you realize some other locations line up with locations in the first game as well, such as the checkpoint rest town being where the Greatwall was, the Volcanic Island Camp being roughly where Cassardis/The Encampment was and most of Battahl is made up of the canyon area passing between the first game's Encampment to Gran Soren and the Eradication Site, the Wyrmsblood Forest is also extremely close to where the first game's Conqueror's Sanctuary would've been, Flamebearer Castle is roughly where the Mountain Waycastle would've been, then you realize the whole questline where you had to exterminate a bunch of saurians from a cave underneath Harve village and save some soldiers is also extremely reminiscent of the well quest in Cassardis in the first game
    I'm really interested in seeing someone do a full-on examining of these areas and seeing if there's any clear references to the first game's locations hidden in either the layout of the land or through similar sidequest stories

    The ending, with my pawn succumbing to Dragonsplague yet retaining his sense of self, was made all the more impactful by an experience near the start of my time in the Unmoored World. One of my pawns had Dragonsplague, though I didn’t know who; I’d just received a tutorial pop-up.
    So I refused to rest. I couldn’t use campsites. The only house I owned was in Vernsworth. The Brine was unreachable.
    I dismissed my other two pawns, and tried to cope for as long as I could. I was noticing every little change in my best friend’s behavior. Then I ran out of Allheal elixirs.
    So I went somewhere I truly believed to be safe, in order to do the single most gut-wrenching thing I’ve ever done in a video game, entirely of my own volition.
    I threw my pawn off of the top of the sunken city of Gran Soren’s temple. He was a Fighter. I had to do this three times before he began to succumb. And just sitting there, waiting, didn’t feel right. So I picked him up and just… started walking through the city.
    He faded away in my arms.
    And then, a scarce few hours later, he gave *everything* for my chance to really, truly, once and for all- break the cycle. This fucking game, man.

    I do appreciate your honest and rather earnest reaction and opinion on this game.
    I loved the Unmoored world as well, but while I did enjoy our Pawn coming in clutch and wrenching their will back. The ending left something to be desired for me at least. It was a glorified cutscene over the ending credits to me. Admittedly I also missed out on the Talos bit due to me not taking it out in time (I thought I just had to run from it, then realized I could fight it and went back, by the time I did, it had already lost its arm). And I did enjoy how much more...INTENSE the world became. It reminded me of the winding corridors of the Everfall, unknown and untamed, with a possible immense danger around every corner.
    All in all, Dragon's Dogma 2 was to me a FUN game and wonderful to play through, but I frankly feel like it's missing some things. And I dearly hope we'll see that in the future so I can keep coming back to it with a smile on my face.

      Imo what the game lacks is a complete narrative.
      From the point where we started to pursue Phaesus it started to make less sense and the whole act felt rushed;
      why are we stopping our pursuit to fight the giant mech that is CLEARLY after him, not us, not to mention the "fight" is so easy and lackluster that a cyclops put talos to shame;
      we found no solution for the godsway taking control of pawns, we learned of what it is and no effort was made to stop the production and utilization of it;
      the whole palace/nation drama setup and went absolutely nowhere, even without choosing the true ending its like, you are the king now congratz, so all that buildup of how Disa and her allies are such schemers and they didnt put up any resistance when we go and claim the throne??? Or did we just skip over all that???;
      The unmoored world part of the story fucking slapped, BUT its the same thing again, all that build up and we don't even get a real fight against the true dragon or whoever that is (which its also very unclear as to who the pathfinder is, the dragon itself? The brine? The pawns true master? Or all of the above?) We just get a semi interactable cutscene :/ a good one but still very disappointing as it provides little to no context as to why the entire thing happened.
      All in all, i feel that the story of the game is incredibly rushed or incomplete, theres also an entire unused section of the map to the top left which is possibly originally supposed to be a third nation where it would tie the whole plot together, or its simply cut out for the DLC.
      Sorry for the long post, i really love dd2 but some aspects of it are definitely lacking especially the story.

      @@atastydonut I think the main premise of this game is that the eternal cycle instills a sense of futility into every aspect of daily life. The political/royal intrigue that is introduced in the first act is initially seen as this imperative matter to address, but in the grand scheme of things, it's a mere trifle because the entire world is a stageplay. It's why Rothais is unwilling to relinquish his role as Seneschal, but also has zero interest in doing anything to perpetuate the story the Greater Will demands be told. He tells us that he conquered the world, achieved apotheosis/godhood, and yet it's all for naught because none of it truly means anything. It's a gallingly bitter pill to swallow.
      That said, I think the game could've done a better job in articulating these themes to the player, and that the point still could've been conveyed in a way where the story also felt more cohesive/fleshed out. I think that would've made the story better tbh, because if we did actually get more content regarding exposing the False Sovran plot, learning that nothing matters in the end would've made that revelation hurt more because it'd invalidate the sheer effort it took us as the player to get to unravel Disa and Phaesus' plot.

Totally agree with your wishlist too, the game really needs a hard mode and I wish NG+ scaled up to match having dragonforged gear.

  • @helenrowan5383

    Dullahans.. I did not know how to deal with them at first, scared the living daylights out of me when one first appeared. They seem to act like a cross between Death and Living Armour. At least you know when they're around because you can't light your lantern. You took it out so quickly! It's always a tense fight for me, but now I know it's easier for the fighter vocation to dispatch them, I'll apply this knowledge to future fights.
    I loved the hell dragon fights. These creatures are like a fusion between the Brine and dragons, my favourite design being the unicorn one. Cute little savage. Reminds me of the cockatrice, they may have borrowed some animations from that creature, or it at least influenced the design and animation process. Those markings to me look like eyes. And the saying is true, it's no fun until someone loses an eye. Absolutely awesome fights.
    I miss fighting hydras, and weirdly evil eyes. I hope they include these creatures in future DLCs, and hopefully they'll include some of the creatures one can encounter in the online game! I wasn't able to play it, but it looks awesome!
    Oh gosh, when my Main Pawn got absorbed by the Talos and then piloted it to fight the next dragon, I was in absolute awe! She kicked scaly backside, even though the suit had lost an arm. I raced around trying to find a way to get in on the fight, but that never eventuated. Instead, cue cutscene where my Main Pawn has a Main Character moment X'D
    So epic!!
    I found that if you wait for the full day to pass, time stops around eight in the evening, Pawns will not return to the rift because it stops their timer too. That's unless this has been patched out, I still haven't accessed the internet for any updates yet, I've been playing it off-line.
    I agree with the quality of life points, I found it a bit jarring not being able to enhance equipment in storage or being able to sell from storage. And hard mode would be great for those who've gotten the feel for the game and want a nice challenge. It was handled well in the first game, hopefully if it's ever implemented in the second it'll be much the same.
    The end cutscene got me right in the feels too. It was so gallant of our Main Pawns to sacrifice themselves to aid us, it made the story way more memorable. I love the endgame, it is much more entertaining than the first games one. I have a soft spot for DD1 though, and nothing can change that, but I really love the second game, even more now since I played the endgame. I thought the game was awesome before, but this just elevated my opinion of it to new extremes. I think I've lost a solid week of hours playing this game. It is addictive! But yeah, the original game's soundtrack was much better.
    I apologise for rambling on, I just love this game, and I enjoy watching others enjoying this game too.

Cuz the postgame is where you're provided with this cool difficulty spike, new enemies, a whole new world to explore with higher enemy density... I think that the limited time was very cool to give you a strong emotional rush that the world was ending, especially after I rested once and saw a whole city getting wiped off the map. But after I was done with it I was kicked into ng+ where everything dies super quick, and it would take really long to get back to the unmoored world. I think the reason the Dragon has less presence in DD2 is because it's not the center piece of the game. In DD1, you are tasked in slaying the Dragon but in DD2, you are to protect the world.
    The center piece of DD2 is its world. The game rewards those who immerse and interact with it, hence why we end up so attached to our Pawns and those of others. The devs wanted us to care for them, their well being, to make them more then just pack mules and meat shields. It's genuinely wholesome to have a game like this in recent years. I also teared up quite a few times during my first run. This game is really special.
    As for "Hard Mode", I feel like it might end being quite a lot more different. Vanilla DD2 already feels sorta like Hard Mode in ways so they'd have to come up with new rules for it. For example, Stamina use being double won't really affect certain classes and the default consumption already feels like DD1 Hard Mode.
    I could see them do something like modifiers to enemies instead. Bring back Carrion Beasts since corpses stick around by default in DD2 but maybe with a twist. They are already known to be extremely tough enemies so have them "infect" the enemies of the region, making them tougher.
    Infected enemies would drop more loot and goodies but the risk of the infection spreading and reaching towns would be similar to Dragonplague so killing the Carrion Beast would end up a priority.
    Another system that could be fun: Prestige/Level Down shop. Reset yours and your Pawn levels but you receive a currency to spend in a special shop with BBI levels of gear and augments. Maybe new Core Skills and Weapon Skills/Spells to unlock too. Would be a sort of reverse scaling: you scale yourself back down so that you can re-experience the early game feeling. Also would let your Pawn be in a decent hire range again instead of cost thousands of RC.
    If Hard Mode doubles exp, leveling back up should be easy peasy.

    I think my biggest gripe with the game has been the terrain climbing. Climbing enemies feels good, but getting on certain ledges and cliffs feels really off. Almost like your entire character is slathered in oil and can’t grab anything to save their life.

    My biggest issues were mostly with the how rushed the batthal side of main quest is and a certain lack of NPC interaction.
    -Beloved does not matter or is empasized at all but could be fixed simply by giving you a heads up like during deny salvation that NPC was taken. After that just give one small cutscene in unmoored world about it and beloved is fixed.
    -Batthal and forbidden magicks laboratory should have few MAIN quests to introduce the concepts and how the city is ruled. Currently you just waltz in as absolute who and walk away with godsbane. We really should have gotten more Main story content about Bakbatthal and Phaesus (like they do this whole thing about them hating Pawns but literally does not manifest and city is full of wandering pawns lmao)
    -Personal petpeeve but OH WHY OH WHY IS MAGIC ARCHER locked behind the volcano island? It makes no sense especially when you could buy gear for MA in sacred arbor but why would you buy low lvl MA gear when you get MA at the place where the best pre unmoored world gear is.
    On side I cope about the story with explanation that DD1 is detailed account about YOUR dude/dudette becoming Arisen and killing the dragon while DD2 is a story about the world where arisen and the dragon are a constant and your arisen happens to be one who goes to fuck around and then find out what happens when you go extremely against the established order of things.

      It's not just Battahl that's rushed. The whole fake Arisen/Sovran plot basically goes nowhere despite you and Brant gathering tons of evidence to expose him. We don't even get to hear him talk and when we do it's at the end of the game. The game made me think he's gonna play a much bigger role in the story.

    also the Dragon (Grigori) went down like a sack of potatoes in my playthrough, i was stunned about how quick he died compared to the first game.

    I am super glad to see you enjoyed your experience with DD2. I had an amazing time too and pretty much had your same reactions for all the things that happened in-game. I had decided to invest myself properly into the game and roleplay in it with as little real world influence as possible. And that was the best decision I could have made. Me as a warrior and my pawn a sorcerer. Two brothers related by duty. Me older, and him younger. Throughout the initial parts of the game, I helped him like a brother should, made sure him and the rest of my party were always safe and in good health. I always went for high fives after combat, always rushed to revive my pawns, and did my best to be true leader. I also made the decision to not dismiss my existing pawns unless they died in combat. Level 30 was the last time for a long time where I hired pawns - one support mage, and one thief. And after some time travelling with the same party, one of them said while camping "Our master is fierce in battle, but good of deed. No sooner am I knocked out, that I am back up on my feet". Hearing that made me happy. Point to note that I had these two level 30 Pawns all the way till Volcanic Island. I will remember their names for good while - Stan the human female mage, and Ibrahim the beastren female thief. (Both by Capcom because I played purely offline). And all this while I saw my Main Pawn slowly getting stronger and smarter. And after I had helped carry him until he reached the peak of his powers, he started carrying me. Obliterating Drakes and other bosses like they were nothing. And in the end, he was so strong (with both Maister skills equipped) that The Dragon did not stand a chance. It was a beautiful journey, made all the more memorable by the post-game and all that happened. ❤

    I love the detail of your pawns dragon transformation. It seems to be the same transformation as when you reach maximum dragonsplague. Which means that, your pawn, with a will of their own. Is able to pull back the dragonsplague, because of you. It's a small but such a cool detail.

    Few things I wish were in this game more.
    STORY: seriously, it's going pretty interesting and then it just flops on it's face when what's his name summons that tumor ridden fake dragon. big boy dragon shows up, torches the fake, somehow has your beloved and says 'square up bitch'. consider how in the first game EVERYTHING revolved around the dragon, the cult of salvation, the actions of the goblins, everything went back to the dragon in a tangible way. here they talk about it but it's more of a non-entity.
    also, the trailers made it seem like there would be a lot of court intrigue in vermund, and there was for all of 2 hours. then it was forgotten about. the intrigue in Battahl is relegated to sidequests. also, we don't get a romance scene with our beloved after the dragon falls. it was tiny in dd1, but it was still SOMETHING.
    Gameplay: still no dual wielding sword class (that's just me though, I love playing that type of class and daggers don't count) the fact that so many quality of life things were removed that were in DD1 (selling from storage, buying TO storage, equipping things from storage, just all gone). overall I also agree that the music in 2 is just... not as good as 1.
    no joke though, this game is STILL amazing. i may think overall dd1 is a better game, but dd2 is still a truly fantastic experience. can't wait for this one's DLC.

    I feel like the other few things i want is the preservitive item in DD1, the ability to change tactics with pawns via the chair (you can just put it in via camp or the tavern), and actually a player owned store. Imagine having the fun pawn and NPC interactions with that. You might even increase or decrease difficulty with selling weapons willy nilly. Fun game, needs some time in the oven
