As a Korean American, I think it's very important to show us in this type of light. We're not all lawyers, doctors, and engineers. I can see and hear the Korean guilt in her story.
It's weird that they think Westerners don't care about their kids. Westerners would be less likely to shun a prostitute daughter, I would think. Maybe I'm wrong.
There are conditions as you cannot come home high steal break windows etc etc so ya as a parent there are definitely conditions. That's reality. Parent(s ) aren't super heros.
It's not easy to adult. You fall you get up sometimes over and over until you finally realize the very boundaries you crossed are the boundaries you need to survive, to not cross no matter who, no matter what and no matter why. Drugs are the worst as they tell you ...hey, boundaries schmoundries ..but don't listen bcoz there's no drug stronger than you. .there's no drug strong enough.xo
People have to remember that parents are people too and some are bad an some are good. If they are bad get help and stay away from them! You owe them nothing x

I'm one of them I did porn and sex work from ages 19-30. I was actually only molested once at age 6 but even that impacted me severely for my entire life.
I really liked her. As someone who’s been a sex worker (online and street walking) I say this with no judgment or hate. She seems like an intelligent inquisitive young woman who has so much to offer. I truly hope she finds something that sparks her passion and goes for it! She’s too valuable to waste away in this dead end lifestyle
She prepared for this interview, she never opened up about her childhood. Her parents might don’t even know she was molested. Her super positive attitude is her personal shield to cope with her traumas & lifestyle. Nonetheless, she’s a strong person and she was indeed refreshing. Yup. You see a handful of people for interviews and everyone is different. Each individual deals with their trauma differently. I hope she's okay and stays strong.
Truly beneath all her words is so much pain and sadness. Honestly in this line of work or in any addiction you can justify and normalize your choices and behaviors. I'm a recovering alcoholic and addict and I can so relate what is beneath all the verbage of her trying to make her lifestyle ok. In my experience I have never met anyone who deep down was fulfilled or happy with their choices in addiction. We hate ourselves. It is truly very sad. There is a different life out there, but you have to do the painful work in recovery to heal. As always, great interview Mark. The longer you get them to talk the more the pain starts to be revealed.
Sex work shouldn’t have to be a negative work environment , her career choice isn’t the issue it’s how the goverment has pushed the industry into the hands of dangerous people
Her being Asian compounds the negative feelings as she's doing something that, "disgraces," her family. So it's twice as difficult for her to live with her choices.😢

Dam, nearly every body walking these streets were sexually abused as a kid. And they are so hurt inside. It's got to be the most destructive kind of abuse.

Being a victim is ok. Its a point and reality in healing. Its just important you don't stay there and use it as the reason not to grow or change with the proper help.

She definitely is fronting. Dodges alot of questions. About the most concealed personality I've seen in one of these interviews. She says what she needs to do she sounds mostly content and happy. What people wanna hear kind of. There some realness here but definitely a very contrast difference than other interviews
the contrast is that Koreans have a collectivist culture, so she naturally views herself in relation to others. when he asks about her individual struggles, she thinks about them in relation to how many other people also struggle, which makes her own seem unexceptional
I did start to feel like she was shielding her emotions at the end. Mark was trying to get more of a real feel and she felt it and threw the shield up. I can imagine thats just part of the territory, you have to find some way to cope.
I had a good chuckle when I went back to catch the "unintended puns." I picked up on hers, but missed yours. Great job with the interview. She masks her pain behind the positive outlook and attitude. I kept wanting her to put down the brave front and give more, but I know she couldn't.
Her canned positivity makes me want to hug her back to life😭❤ She knows what to say, she has all the right answers but those of us who have reached the depths of despair know which responses are genuinely true and which are not.
“If my family had their arms open I could be the person they wanted me to be” “Money doesn’t buy your character, money can break you too” Very free spirited, knowledgeable, and confident! When she stated men see an Asian woman and immediately think of or want sex that is very very true! Asian women are very sexualized. (Look up Asian women fetishized/sexualized) there are many articles on it. I hope she can mend her family relationship as mark and herself stated Asian families have high expectations for their kids. Usually when they feel their kid has “failed” them they disown them. Sending light and love Gucci!
I used to think a lot of prostitutes were downright gross but after seeing how many have been sexually abused as children, it makes much more sense. They use prostitution as a way of being in control of their sex life, especially because they couldn't as kids. Gucci seems rly smart and I hope at some point she has a family of her own.
Sex work has nothing to do with your sex life in private. I think that people who were not protected as a child, are more likely to hit the streets, and that's where you will meet certain people. Btw, lots of people were abused when they were a child, so you will find abused people in all kinds of professions.
I worked as a stripper for almost a decade, and I was also raped at 14. Almost every woman I met and got to know while dancing had told me they were sexually abused as children. My friend told me years later that she was raped when she was 6 years old by her grandfather and uncle. She ran away from home at 12 so it would stop. Heartbreaking.
Gucci definitely had her “mask” on for this interview. Which is understandable. I would’ve loved to really know what is going on though. Very sad her family doesn’t want to talk to her. I wish Gucci a happy & healthy life, and that she will get out of this lifestyle. 🤍

My heart breaks for her. She generalizes. She won't admit how hurt she really is. Walls are built to protect. As a runaway and as a child of an alcoholic with lots of abuse I'm thankful I did not end up on the streets even though I was a runaway. I was able to go back home. My heart breaks for the ones who can't go back home. They can't find their way back or they are not wanted to come back. I can't imagine rejecting my own children. But the cycle of addicted parents and addicted children propagates that.
This woman is so lovely and so optimistic. I understand that she’s showing us her world through rose-colored glasses but she obviously is a strong and resilient person trying to keep her head up. I sincerely hope she gets that non-profit she dreams of.

her responses of "we all ___! doesn't everyone ____?" are super interesting because Asian cultures are considered "collectivist," which means that people see themselves as part of a larger group, more than as a unique individual like black/white Americans. it's cool to see those values in contrast to most other interviews. she isn't trying to deflect his questions, she naturally thinks about her experiences in relation to other people's, which makes them seem less severe
Didn't think of it like that, good point. It's almost as if shes not just bringing her family shame but the whole Asian community as a collective (in her perspective).
Felt much more like deflection to me. She has a habit of putting a positive spin on negative things, and those generalized responses are one way it shows.
If she's acting she's very good. No really, l believe in her positive spirit and positive attitude. Why? Because, when a person realizes that he/ she is NOT A VICTIM, that person is FREE to take control of his life. No matter what's going on, Gucci is now in control. She can steer herself right or left or whatever direction she wants. She's not dependent on drugs either. Good for her.
It was interesting to me that she deflected a lot of the questions directed to her by not answering for herself, but saying "everyone...". Maybe as not to be seen as the exception or perhaps due to sense of guilt, sadness, regrets...
There is a reason why prostitution is the oldest profession ever. I've known a few strippers and could sit down and just talk. No big deal. I have nothing but compassion for prostitutes. I remember what my dad taught me. He said son remember a prostitute is a father's little girl too. God bless.
There seems to be one common thread that runs through the vast majority of sex workers, and that is that they were sexually abused at a very young age. That speaks volumes as to why we should do all we can to protect the young in our society, and those who violate them be given all the punishment the law allows. For her, its all about the money now but beneath that she is a human being who is hurting. She needs help. Untreated sex abuse issues most of the time lead these people down a tough, long and often self destructive road that prevent them from living a normal life. There is still a way out Gucci, you dont have to continue in that same path.
I think about this every time I see these videos. The common thread in almost all of these interviews is being failed by their parents, most commonly by sexual abuse. I feel it’s our job to protect our children. All children, not just our own. We need to speak out more and know what signs to look for.
I was sexually abused for years and years as a child, and there was physical violence too, and emotional abuse. I don't want to say you can never get better, because you can, but I honestly don't think you can have the mind of a person who wasn't abused. Science actually shows this, now; it shows how it changes a child's developing brain, and you can't go back from that. What's changed is changed. However, you can do you best to work with what you have. I suppose I was lucky, because I ran away at 16, but I moved in with a boyfriend who was much older, and he wasn't a creep or a pimp or anything (well, maybe a bit creepy given our age difference, but, still, he wasn't a pimp or anything). I never go into stripping or prostitution or anything, but I was very promiscuous for a lot of years, and I had no idea, until way way later, that there was a connection between that and sexual abuse. The best way I can describe it is that....it was like I didn't know I could have boundaries. I didn' t know I could say no. I mean, when you've never had boundaries, you just don't really know about them. My body had always been there for people in my family to do and touch as they wanted, and I just...it was like I didn' t know I could say no. I didn't fully understand that that was an option.

I think it is very hard to deal with this topic with balance. Gucci is wòrking on the street I think. I think it is wildly different than well regulated work in clubs. This just my thinking. I dont know. I looked at this from a different perspective up to watching these interviews. I dont really know but I think a lot of the club clientele are jus lonely divorced guys looking for a female companion..

I find this young woman very articulate & has a lot to offer. I hope that she gets to do her vision on helping others as she said. She’s very pretty & very shrewd but & I hope she gets herself into the true path she desires. No one is hopeless & regardless of age it’s NEVER too late to begin again. I hope she changes in what she wants to become…. 😌
I enjoyed her vibrant personality and would love to hear more of her story. She’s still very young so now would be a great time to choose a new career path and begin training for it. She can have her cake and eat it too, so to speak. I think there’s more to her choosing this path than what she told us today. Prayers for her safety and emotional health. @@marylougeorge9890 Whether we agree or don't, it doesn't help her. Sadly she is first American born generation. Asians hold very high standards for their children. They expect them to become professionals, doctors, lawyers, etc. Also they expect to be cared for by their children in their old age. We don't know what they sacrificed to come here, and raise their daughter. To become a street walker? They are very hard on forgiveness when you disappoint them and/or bring shame to them. Sadly they worry more about what the "neighbors" and their circle will look and see them as is.. I wish her the best and hopes she reaches her goals and opens up that nonprofit organization for children that may fall into that type of lifestyle. I believe she can do it.
A lot of ppl never really GROW UP.. may look like adults but most are still those hurt kids that weren’t loved properly, weren’t protected, & have learned to simply bury the hurt since no one taught them how to properly cope. We have to talk to that kid that’s within us & give them the love we wish we received when we were kids. Give ourselves some grace…..
Asians Do reject the, "black sheep." That was me. I was the 1st born so I was expected to be perfect. Couldn't live up to those demands/restrictions so I rebelled. I'm the only child out of 7 who got kicked out several times. I finally left for good before my mom got a chance to throw me out. And then she came after me! Such control issues.

She is looking for acceptance from herself & from her family & society for making the choices that put her on this path.she is trying to justify her life & choices & let us believe she is in control,that is why she said the part about enjoying making money.i don't feel she is comfortable with herself or anything about her life.she is such a beautiful person inside & out.i truly hope she finds away out & makes a better life for herself one that she is fully proud of & comfortable with.the only thing she likes about this job is the money nothing else.
I'm half Asian and it's been ingrained even into me that you don't open up or show your emotions to anybody. You hold it inside and let it all out when nobody is watching.

Exactly. And she's basically saying it's ok for them to take out their aggression/frustration on her and then they are (allegedly) so relaxed afterwards and she's making he streets safer. She's not curing these guys. She's just "relieving" them temporarily. It's very sad and I'm worried about her.
The one thing we all forget yet need to remember more than anything else is to show kindness and respect towards one another. I don't date sex workers but, if I did, I would always be kind, gentle, and respectful to them always cognizant that she is also a human being doing what she needs to do to survive and deserves to be treated well. She's doing a public-facing job that is all about personal interactions with her client. Respect that. Be kind. Be a decent guy to her. I suspect she will treat you better in kind as well. It's no different than treating any other worker you encounter in your daily goings about. Just be nice and that person will much more likely be genuinely nice to you back.
Man I love her outlook on life and the fact that she wants to help the unfortunate. I would say I really like this one. Seen a lot of these videos, but this one I most definitely like.
Im first generation Asian American born my family came from Vietnam after the war as boat people having to start over in the US on welfare in the poorest neighborhoods on section 8. So naturally we gravitated toward the streets with my brothers and others like me growing up in the Bay Area in the 90s when Asian gangs were most active.. My parents was also strict with high expectations but didn’t understand the American culture the way we do so that caused a lot of speed bumps along way. Not till things got a lil better was I able to look back and realize what we all been thru. Like many in this blessed country we live in I’ve also struggled with addiction n got felony convictions. Been clean for years now and looking forward to the future.. can’t see the trees until you’re out of the woods.. get ur $$$ n keep doing U Miss Gucci!!!.. It’ll all come together one day or another, one way or another!
One of the most intelligent, well spoken women you've interviewed. The thought of her working on Figeuroa Street though scares me. I wish she would do something safer. Getting into stranger's cars is so dangerous. I hope she gets out of this. She's too smart for this kind of work.
I actually love her attitude, she’s consistently positive, self assuring and optimistic and I really think that’s all you need to be able to enjoy your life, good for her ❤️
She generalizes every answer as to avoid any direct examination of what is being asked of her, and what she truly feels. This woman sadly, is in extreme pain.
When she says she takes one less predator off the streets, it actually shows that she has an holistic consciousness and thinks women have to do a sort of mirror like compensation for the men to level out suffering and pain and disarray. It's actually legit (even though most women wouldn't play that role for the sake of the whole). Maybe her wellbeing sort of happens to coincide with the whole's correction to which she takes the worst pain for the least amount of reward.
I don't know the answer to this, it's a genuine question. Do men who rape women on the streets (ie. Women unknown to them) also use prostitutes? If they do, why don't they stick to legitimately using prostitutes, instead of committing a crime by raping a woman?
@@cch9680 I'm not particularly knowlegeable on the subject matter, but from what I know prostitutes also get raped which is why many get a pimp to orbit them to make sure no client steps the red line. So I don't think there is a general rule, some discriminate, some may not. Rapists, from what I can imagine, are probably either sexually repressed or sexually liberal (both extremes), they have resentment toward women, some even may even wrestle with their sense of manhood, and probably also have excess testosterone. High levels of testosterone increase risk taking, impulsivity, and more often spontaneous irritability until sexual desire is relieved. There is a lot of power play involved, so I guess women that are more full of themselves and arrogant could be bigger targets, which you'd see on higher status women. I could totally imagine the "I'll show you that you are not as good as you think" mixed with "I'll show you I'm not beneath you" and a little of "here is the proof you stuck up woman have to get in your place while I openly subdue you to display my superiority and your inferiority". But I'm sure there are other flavors like the incestual father-to-daugther rapist or the priest-child, the druken couple that gets out of hand or the boss-employee status advantage which all have different motivations. They all boil down to the ability to exert uncountered physical power getting the sexual gratificatory exploits. Those are my two cents. I can't back any of this with facts but it seems like this cocktail (no pun intended) would make sense.
I totally believe her capacity to accomplish her goal to open the non-profit and help youth on the streets. I feel that she already has intentions set. She keeps a positive perspective because she is resilient, and she has wisdom to boot. She will come out ahead of life i believe.
Sad for her that as first generation korean in the USA she was left with the impression that the "American dream" is partying, drinking, money, drugs, sex, and going to the streets.

She's great. I like how she doesn't let anyone define her. There are so many stereotypical notions of how you're "supposed" to feel and think. Society surrounds you with those notions and tries to force you into a box. It takes courage not to be forced into "the box". She doesn't even like to think of herself as "Asian". In a time when much of the population is obsessing over race issues and molding all of their politics and personal identity over their racial ethnicity, it's really awesome to see someone totally rejecting that.

After watching hundreds of SWU videos, there have been less than a handful that i didnt love. Its something about Marks questions here or maybe his vibe is off. She said she didnt really like “this whole asian thing” but he proceeds to ask more questions specifically centered around her being asian/asian culture. She was very honest & open, a great women.
I'm half Asian American and noticed that too. But I think it's mostly because you very rarely see asian sex workers on this channel or in general so he's more curious.
I appreciate her spirit and her attitude, she has a lot of spunk....but sadly that positive spunk appears to be the "wall" she was talking about putting up. It is a false face. This interview started out a little more difficult for you (Mark) because she spent most of her time trying to answer your questions with general, philosophical statements and platitudes as a guard against you getting too close with probing questions. We only found out quite by accident in a slipped moment of unguardedness that she was molested as a child 2/3rds of the way into the interview when you had asked her several questions at the beginning that would have been great opportunities to divulge so serious an element in her formative years. She is beautiful, she is fun to listen to, she has been through a lot but she is purposely hiding behind her philosophical pontifications. That much effort to hide implies that underneath all we just listened to is a very broken, very lost girl who wishes her life was something completely different than it has become. The thing that is most sad is that she has such powerful potential but it is easier, more practical, more familiar, and probably more financially expedient to live this lie about who she really is.
I'm kind of tearing up a bit. She's very touching and likeable. I really identify with her... Pardon the TMI here. ...I mean, I _know_ to some degree she's used to putting on a front to seem likeable and charming, which is ok. ...I do the same thing. I have chronic depression and anxiety. So I had to train myself consciously in my 20's to be charming to people. To use humor, and kindness, to interact. It's a front. Sort of. Because almost 30 years later? The front is reflexive. I faked it 'till I made it. Or sort of. Because I was always basically kind, I do mostly like people (they just scare me), and I'm good at seeing absurdity. This has been my TED talk.
Honestly, she just makes so much sense to me. Smart (aware) woman. One argument, you do not have to be in sex work to feel like a means to an end (sexually objectified). In my experience, it was taken from me against my will so many times, I may as well have gotten paid.
I for one appreciate her candid positivity. It’s not always a mask, two things can be true at once. She can whole heartedly live by these principles, and it’s due to her experiences that she was able to get there mentally. Healing is not linear, and I wish the best for her ✨
Knowing the Asian culture, I get why her parents have disowned her. Not that I agree. It's based on status. "Saving face," making sure you don't dishonor your family is the rule. Disgrace your family and it's possible you're, "dead," to them. You keep your personal business private. You don't talk about certain subjects. No one is to know anything negative about your family. My mom had 7 kids and said, "pg," not pregnant! If we brought up topics she considered inappropriate, she would give us a, "shut up," disgusted look &/ let us know to shut up!🤣 Depending on your family, you may never have a chance to get back into the family. Too many demands on an individual to, "fit the mould," can create a rebellious child. It's, "you don't accept/like me as I am so I'll show you how bad I can be!" Been there.😢😅
Yes, I do not know about Korean Culture, but I know it is that way in Vietnamese Culture - 'saving face' is exactly what it is called in Vietnamese culture. The probem is it results in some really negative things, like a girl might claim that she isn't being hit by her husband in order to save face. I know this is a totally different angle on this, but, remember the Fukushima nuclear plant when it exploded or whatever happened? They were doing this interview with Japanese workers who'd worked at the plant, and they way they were talking, it really made you wonder if saving face contriubuted to the problem, because there were workers who KNEW something wasn't right, but because of saving face would not question their bosses, or contradict their bosses, etc.

I mean no disrespect when I say this. American culture is not to blame. I wasn’t even born here, coming to the US at 13. It’s NOT easy. The life of an immigrant is a constant question about who you were / where you are coming from and who / where you are. The need to belong is always that much greater. It’s easy to say that “the culture” exposes you all the ways your life can turn out dark / less than rosy. But it’s still a willingness to listen. To adapt. To understand your parents who work so hard and sacrifice so much to come here and give you the chance to live a better life. Again, it isn’t easy but it’s the family environment / nurture and the nature that plays a bigger role in shaping our choices than American culture.
As a child of immigrants, i second this. American culture can damage the fuck out of us (esp when youre, like Gucci and myself, a nonwhite immigrant) but its not to blame for someone ending up as a sex worker.
I'm half asian half white. I'm first generation on my mom's side (Chinese) and 7th generation on my dad's (Irish). I worked as a stripper for nearly a decade. You are right, but I think it also differs depending on what culture you are from. What I think happened in her case was that her family expected her to live the way they did in their country and did not understand or take into consideration they were raising her (as first generation) in a completely different country with different cultural norms. I don't think American culture in any way encouraged her to go down this path, but her parents likely had high expectations that differed from her friends, peers, etc., and this caused her to rebel and go completely the other way (which is not uncommon for anyone from a strict family background and upbringing.) Combined with being molested young, and even just her personality not being the same as her parents/family, she went down this path.

I love in this interview how Mark broke Gucci down to share herself with us….. she really is quite secure for being in this industry she is in. She also has a very sweet disposition about the negativity and stereotypes of prostitution! It isn't nearly as common for women who are working at her age to have a pimp. Pimps prey on younger girls in their teens and early to mid 20s. She likely used to have one but now works independently. Speaking from experience.

This woman is trying to generalize her feelings and experiences so she feels it's less of a personal issue and just a human issue so she can justify the negative feelings she has as a result of what she's doing as something she would likely feel anyway. Gucci when growing up I was a total SOB to my parents, drinking, drugging, and motorcycle gangs. I caused them way too much heart ache. Later in my lifewhen I was 36 years old, I got Clean & Sober, and slowly my mind became clean. My father died when I was still using, and never had the chance to tell him I loved him. But through a spritual connection, I talked with God, and he relaid my message to my father, of loving him, and sorry for all the BS I caused in his life, like hearing your video, as your talking to me, I know my father received my love, and we were at peace, a little late, but 100% received. Also with my mom, who did everything for me, but I never appreciated anything. Well on her death bed at our home, with Hospice by her side, I made peace with my mom, she heard my love for here and againmade amends to her for all the grief I made. Along with clean and sober my heart is clean, of my growing up years. Gucci if you can get with your parents, and cleaning their, and your slate with them, I hope you'll get the opportunity to do so, love ya gal, enjoyed your video.

Truly beneath all her words is so much pain and sadness. Honestly in this line of work or in any addiction you can justify and normalize your choices and behaviors. I'm a recovering alcoholic and addict and I can so relate what is beneath all the verbage of her trying to make her lifestyle ok. In my experience I have never met anyone who deep down was fulfilled or happy with their choices in addiction. We hate ourselves. It is truly very sad. There is a different life out there, but you have to do the painful work in recovery to heal. As always, great interview Mark. The longer you get them to talk the more the pain starts to be revealed.

Dam, nearly every body walking these streets were sexually abused as a kid. And they are so hurt inside. It's got to be the most destructive kind of abuse.
IIRC, 1 in 6 girls are sexually assaulted, 1 in 10 boys are. It is a major trauma, but it's also SO common. 🤢😭😠

She definitely is fronting. Dodges alot of questions. About the most concealed personality I've seen in one of these interviews. She says what she needs to do she sounds mostly content and happy. What people wanna hear kind of. There some realness here but definitely a very contrast difference than other interviews
the contrast is that Koreans have a collectivist culture, so she naturally views herself in relation to others. when he asks about her individual struggles, she thinks about them in relation to how many other people also struggle, which makes her own seem unexceptional
I'm sure that has alot to do with it.
I did start to feel like she was shielding her emotions at the end. Mark was trying to get more of a real feel and she felt it and threw the shield up. I can imagine thats just part of the territory, you have to find some way to cope.
She didn't show the real her. She didn't get deep at all.
I had a good chuckle when I went back to catch the "unintended puns." I picked up on hers, but missed yours. Great job with the interview. She masks her pain behind the positive outlook and attitude. I kept wanting her to put down the brave front and give more, but I know she couldn't.

I worked as a stripper for almost a decade, and I was also raped at 14. Almost every woman I met and got to know while dancing had told me they were sexually abused as children. My friend told me years later that she was raped when she was 6 years old by her grandfather and uncle. She ran away from home at 12 so it would stop. Heartbreaking.

Truth. Every time I watch one of these videos I think of how easily it could've been anyone as many have grown up in abusive families.
My heart breaks for her. She generalizes. She won't admit how hurt she really is. Walls are built to protect. As a runaway and as a child of an alcoholic with lots of abuse I'm thankful I did not end up on the streets even though I was a runaway. I was able to go back home. My heart breaks for the ones who can't go back home. They can't find their way back or they are not wanted to come back. I can't imagine rejecting my own children. But the cycle of addicted parents and addicted children propagates that.
This woman is so lovely and so optimistic. I understand that she’s showing us her world through rose-colored glasses but she obviously is a strong and resilient person trying to keep her head up. I sincerely hope she gets that non-profit she dreams of.

Didn't think of it like that, good point. It's almost as if shes not just bringing her family shame but the whole Asian community as a collective (in her perspective).
Felt much more like deflection to me. She has a habit of putting a positive spin on negative things, and those generalized responses are one way it shows.

There seems to be one common thread that runs through the vast majority of sex workers, and that is that they were sexually abused at a very young age. That speaks volumes as to why we should do all we can to protect the young in our society, and those who violate them be given all the punishment the law allows. For her, its all about the money now but beneath that she is a human being who is hurting. She needs help. Untreated sex abuse issues most of the time lead these people down a tough, long and often self destructive road that prevent them from living a normal life. There is still a way out Gucci, you dont have to continue in that same path.
I think about this every time I see these videos.
The common thread in almost all of these interviews is being failed by their parents, most commonly by sexual abuse.
I feel it’s our job to protect our children. All children, not just our own. We need to speak out more and know what signs to look for.
I was sexually abused for years and years as a child, and there was physical violence too, and emotional abuse. I don't want to say you can never get better, because you can, but I honestly don't think you can have the mind of a person who wasn't abused. Science actually shows this, now; it shows how it changes a child's developing brain, and you can't go back from that. What's changed is changed.
However, you can do you best to work with what you have. I suppose I was lucky, because I ran away at 16, but I moved in with a boyfriend who was much older, and he wasn't a creep or a pimp or anything (well, maybe a bit creepy given our age difference, but, still, he wasn't a pimp or anything). I never go into stripping or prostitution or anything, but I was very promiscuous for a lot of years, and I had no idea, until way way later, that there was a connection between that and sexual abuse.
The best way I can describe it is that....it was like I didn't know I could have boundaries. I didn' t know I could say no.
I mean, when you've never had boundaries, you just don't really know about them. My body had always been there for people in my family to do and touch as they wanted, and I just...it was like I didn' t know I could say no. I didn't fully understand that that was an option.

Asians Do reject the, "black sheep." That was me. I was the 1st born so I was expected to be perfect. Couldn't live up to those demands/restrictions so I rebelled. I'm the only child out of 7 who got kicked out several times. I finally left for good before my mom got a chance to throw me out. And then she came after me! Such control issues.

The one thing we all forget yet need to remember more than anything else is to show kindness and respect towards one another. I don't date sex workers but, if I did, I would always be kind, gentle, and respectful to them always cognizant that she is also a human being doing what she needs to do to survive and deserves to be treated well. She's doing a public-facing job that is all about personal interactions with her client. Respect that. Be kind. Be a decent guy to her. I suspect she will treat you better in kind as well. It's no different than treating any other worker you encounter in your daily goings about. Just be nice and that person will much more likely be genuinely nice to you back.

Im first generation Asian American born my family came from Vietnam after the war as boat people having to start over in the US on welfare in the poorest neighborhoods on section 8. So naturally we gravitated toward the streets with my brothers and others like me growing up in the Bay Area in the 90s when Asian gangs were most active.. My parents was also strict with high expectations but didn’t understand the American culture the way we do so that caused a lot of speed bumps along way. Not till things got a lil better was I able to look back and realize what we all been thru. Like many in this blessed country we live in I’ve also struggled with addiction n got felony convictions. Been clean for years now and looking forward to the future.. can’t see the trees until you’re out of the woods..

When she says she takes one less predator off the streets, it actually shows that she has an holistic consciousness and thinks women have to do a sort of mirror like compensation for the men to level out suffering and pain and disarray. It's actually legit (even though most women wouldn't play that role for the sake of the whole). Maybe her wellbeing sort of happens to coincide with the whole's correction to which she takes the worst pain for the least amount of reward.
I don't know the answer to this, it's a genuine question. Do men who rape women on the streets (ie. Women unknown to them) also use prostitutes? If they do, why don't they stick to legitimately using prostitutes, instead of committing a crime by raping a woman?
@@cch9680 I'm not particularly knowlegeable on the subject matter, but from what I know prostitutes also get raped which is why many get a pimp to orbit them to make sure no client steps the red line. So I don't think there is a general rule, some discriminate, some may not.
Rapists, from what I can imagine, are probably either sexually repressed or sexually liberal (both extremes), they have resentment toward women, some even may even wrestle with their sense of manhood, and probably also have excess testosterone. High levels of testosterone increase risk taking, impulsivity, and more often spontaneous irritability until sexual desire is relieved.
There is a lot of power play involved, so I guess women that are more full of themselves and arrogant could be bigger targets, which you'd see on higher status women. I could totally imagine the "I'll show you that you are not as good as you think" mixed with "I'll show you I'm not beneath you" and a little of "here is the proof you stuck up woman have to get in your place while I openly subdue you to display my superiority and your inferiority". But I'm sure there are other flavors like the incestual father-to-daugther rapist or the priest-child, the druken couple that gets out of hand or the boss-employee status advantage which all have different motivations. They all boil down to the ability to exert uncountered physical power getting the sexual gratificatory exploits.
Those are my two cents. I can't back any of this with facts but it seems like this cocktail (no pun intended) would make sense.

I totally believe her capacity to accomplish her goal to open the non-profit and help youth on the streets. I feel that she already has intentions set. She keeps a positive perspective because she is resilient, and she has wisdom to boot. She will come out ahead of life i believe.

She's great. I like how she doesn't let anyone define her. There are so many stereotypical notions of how you're "supposed" to feel and think. Society surrounds you with those notions and tries to force you into a box. It takes courage not to be forced into "the box". She doesn't even like to think of herself as "Asian". In a time when much of the population is obsessing over race issues and molding all of their politics and personal identity over their racial ethnicity, it's really awesome to see someone totally rejecting that.
Your are so right. We didn't let anyone define us and force us into "the box" and we became the most powerful, famous and successful men in human history. You are so cool to understand us.

After watching hundreds of SWU videos, there have been less than a handful that i didnt love. Its something about Marks questions here or maybe his vibe is off. She said she didnt really like “this whole asian thing” but he proceeds to ask more questions specifically centered around her being asian/asian culture. She was very honest & open, a great women.

I appreciate her spirit and her attitude, she has a lot of spunk....but sadly that positive spunk appears to be the "wall" she was talking about putting up. It is a false face. This interview started out a little more difficult for you (Mark) because she spent most of her time trying to answer your questions with general, philosophical statements and platitudes as a guard against you getting too close with probing questions. We only found out quite by accident in a slipped moment of unguardedness that she was molested as a child 2/3rds of the way into the interview when you had asked her several questions at the beginning that would have been great opportunities to divulge so serious an element in her formative years. She is beautiful, she is fun to listen to, she has been through a lot but she is purposely hiding behind her philosophical pontifications. That much effort to hide implies that underneath all we just listened to is a very broken, very lost girl who wishes her life was something completely different than it has become. The thing that is most sad is that she has such powerful potential but it is easier, more practical, more familiar, and probably more financially expedient to live this lie about who she really is.
I'm kind of tearing up a bit. She's very touching and likeable.

Honestly, she just makes so much sense to me. Smart (aware) woman. One argument, you do not have to be in sex work to feel like a means to an end (sexually objectified). In my experience, it was taken from me against my will so many times, I may as well have gotten paid.

It's based on status. "Saving face," making sure you don't dishonor your family is the rule. Disgrace your family and it's possible you're, "dead," to them.

Yes, I do not know about Korean Culture, but I know it is that way in Vietnamese Culture - 'saving face' is exactly what it is called in Vietnamese culture. The probem is it results in some really negative things, like a girl might claim that she isn't being hit by her husband in order to save face.
I know this is a totally different angle on this, but, remember the Fukushima nuclear plant when it exploded or whatever happened? They were doing this interview with Japanese workers who'd worked at the plant, and they way they were talking, it really made you wonder if saving face contriubuted to the problem, because there were workers who KNEW something wasn't right, but because of saving face would not question their bosses, or contradict their bosses, etc.

I mean no disrespect when I say this. American culture is not to blame. I wasn’t even born here, coming to the US at 13. It’s NOT easy. The life of an immigrant is a constant question about who you were / where you are coming from and who / where you are. The need to belong is always that much greater. It’s easy to say that “the culture” exposes you all the ways your life can turn out dark / less than rosy. But it’s still a willingness to listen. To adapt. To understand your parents who work so hard and sacrifice so much to come here and give you the chance to live a better life. Again, it isn’t easy but it’s the family environment / nurture and the nature that plays a bigger role in shaping our choices than American culture.
As a child of immigrants, i second this. American culture can damage the fuck out of us (esp when youre, like Gucci and myself, a nonwhite immigrant) but its not to blame for someone ending up as a sex worker.
I'm half asian half white. I'm first generation on my mom's side (Chinese) and 7th generation on my dad's (Irish). I worked as a stripper for nearly a decade. You are right, but I think it also differs depending on what culture you are from. What I think happened in her case was that her family expected her to live the way they did in their country and did not understand or take into consideration they were raising her (as first generation) in a completely different country with different cultural norms. I don't think American culture in any way encouraged her to go down this path, but her parents likely had high expectations that differed from her friends, peers, etc., and this caused her to rebel and go completely the other way (which is not uncommon for anyone from a strict family background and upbringing.) Combined with being molested young, and even just her personality not being the same as her parents/family, she went down this path.

It isn't nearly as common for women who are working at her age to have a pimp. Pimps prey on younger girls in their teens and early to mid 20s. She likely used to have one but now works independently. Speaking from experience.

Gucci when growing up I was a total SOB to my parents, drinking, drugging, and motorcycle gangs. I caused them way too much heart ache. Later in my lifewhen I was 36 years old, I got Clean & Sober, and slowly my mind became clean. My father died when I was still using, and never had the chance to tell him I loved him. But through a spritual connection, I talked with God, and he relaid my message to my father, of loving him, and sorry for all the BS I caused in his life, like hearing your video, as your talking to me, I know my father received my love, and we were at peace, a little late, but 100% received. Also with my mom, who did everything for me, but I never appreciated anything. Well on her death bed at our home, with Hospice by her side, I made peace with my mom, she heard my love for here and againmade amends to her for all the grief I made. Along with clean and sober my heart is clean, of my growing up years. Gucci if you can get with your parents, and cleaning their, and your slate with them, I hope you'll get the opportunity to do so, love ya gal, enjoyed your video.
