When you get hit with the Kyo episodes, you think its the saddest. And then you get bodyslammed by Rin's unexpectedly out of nowhere.
But Kyo is def the animators' fave they always spend the budget on him 😅😅😅
Yes, there are several characters' stories that just come stab me in the feels on a regular basis.
37:30 I would also like to point out about the Akito kyo confrontation that kyo has been warned not to “lash out in frond of Akito like and idiot” by Yuki both in the previous ep and right before he got into the room and his attitude to that was “you don’t have to tell me, I know”.
It was all in an attempt to keep Akito from getting mad and possibly lashing out at tohru… Which in the end of course didn’t work.
To me his reaction also seemed appropriate given his trauma, Akito knew exactly the worst things to say that affected him the most
But I get why you may have felt differently, it can be frustrating watching it as a viewer…
Congrats Carson… i like seeing that you’re listening more and paying better attention to the dialogues in these episodes. Your theories and conclusions are much better when you do that.
I would point out though that even if this episode mirrored episode 9 of this season with Akito confronting Rin vs Akito confronting Kyo… there’s a difference between the two that makes you probably think Kyo’s confrontation is weird and doesn’t make sense and that is the amount of background story/context revealed to us. Here in Rin’s episode, it all makes sense to you because everything that is implied in the previous episodes about her has been confirmed and revealed… basically everything that we need to know about her situation has been revealed… it’s almost a full circle moment for her. In Kyo’s though, some parts are still left intentionally unrevealed. A lot was implied but not revealed/confirmed during that confrontation. Some context/background will be revealed much later that will make you say everything about him now makes sense and I can’t wait to watch your reaction to that full circle moment about Kyo.

He is so much so that akito's soundtracks, which are ominous and evil, and are supposed to remind us of her, actually reminds me of shigure more. It's like he's the one everyone should fear instead of akito. A wolf in sheep's clothing? At least everybody knows that akito's evil. No one knows that about shigure, at least not the ones who should know (the kids living with him )

Shishou IS the best character in the world, hands down. Couldn’t agree more😊 Which definitely highlights the contrast between him and the rest of the shitty adults in this family. They just become worse and worse in comparison (or just in general, actually). Rin’s parents are ones of the very worst, they get not even an inkling of redemption, and in the context that they’re presented they really shouldn’t. But as you’ve started to guess, it doesn’t end here. Great discussion and analysis of the story and characters. It was really enjoyable to listen to.

Akito has done so many awful, unforgivable things and doing this to Rin a huge one. Poor Rin 😢
This is a very dear and beloved series and also generally considered to be of very high quality, so I think the push back Carson's experiencing from the us the audience when it comes to the whole gay misogynist Akito analysis is just that people don't like feeling uncomfortable about what they like. Carson's take is perfectly valid given the information he's been given, his analysis is a perfectly sound one to make and people need to get more comfortable with feeling uncomfortable about certain aspects of works they enjoy, especially when it comes to engaging in other people's reactions to the same information and interpreting it in a different way. In the end, we can't expect them to reach the same conclusions as people who have already finished, least of all when they've not finished the entire work.

I feel you guys are more and more on point in your discussions. How Akito affects Rin, how Tohru finally is starting to notice her feelings, Yuki being the biggest simp for Kyoru 😂...
Btw, the interest Kakeru has in Tohru isnt animated or explained. If you want to know it's because the father of his girlfriend was the one driving when Kyoko was killed. They met at her funeral and Kakeru was pretty rude (in his way). The gf confronted him and that's when he started trying to be more empatic. A shame the gilfriend episodes didt make it into the anime. It helped too to show the growth of Yuki/Kakeru's relationship.
Your read on Shigure is great except on one thing: the love part. The problem isnt that Shigure doesnt love, he loves too much to the point of being toxic.
If I remember correctly the father had a heart attack and that’s what caused him to lose control of his car.
It’s to bad that anime onlys won’t get to meet Kakeru Meat Angel. She is a gem.
@@notthesimi Yeah. Komaki is cute and funny (and when she met Yuki was hilarious). Also, their chapters helped with the "other" realtionship. 3rd season feels rushed in that particular case and it's because they only adapted the more important chapters, but not all
I think the worst part is that they DID animate Kakeru’s interest in Tohru, but never planned to explain it which is crazy. It even seemed to dwindle after the “What if I said I like her” talk, which is super weird note to leave it off of and then the reveal of him dating someone else. Anime onlys never get an explanation, despite it being a super interesting tie in to Tohru’s character (I believe those chapters implying Tohru faking her happiness at times) and her relationships with others outside the Sohmas.
@@sylver_drawer Indeed. Not only we learn more about Kakeru and his family (wich is important for Yuki's story) but it also was a big part for Tohru's development as a character. Tohru is always the "one helping everyone" and the chaps that show that she is actually human with problems and traumas are sooo important (and the basis of Kyoru, seeing that Kyo is the one who tries to supports her and help her)

I really enjoyed the discussion on these episodes. As usual, most of my thoughts would be spoilery still....but very interesting to watch you two look at the puzzle pieces you've been given so far and try to make sense of them.
I love your commentary about gender roles in Fruits Basket because it's caused me to examine Furuba in a different way than I normally do. And I wonder how future stuff will influence how you view this! I mean, before, I had looked at gender stuff in Furuba, but also largely through my own queer lens. So, a different perspective is interesting!
