hey that's me on bass clarinet! sounds great!
you are awesome man .
thank you!
I thought that sounded like a bass clarinet! Love it!
I'm from Northumberland and we learn this one at school.
Reminders not to scab are always topical, but this feeks especially on topic during the current waves of strikes in the US and UK.
I will never get over how great Colin's voice sounds in every one of the songs he sings.
So true!
It's amazing to see new interpretations of ballads from the English collections... this is bound to be one of the best electric folk records of all time. Arrangements are great, voices magnificent, hype real.
My favourite rendition of this classic song and a timeless reminder to never ever scab during a strike
Solidarity from the TN IWW and IBEW Local 175. Nothing worse than a scab. Solidarity, comrades.
This is one of my favourite folk songs. My Dad has been in folk music since early 70s and this evokes memories of band practice, folk festivals, and many gatherings. I'd love to hear OFFA REX do Stepping Out Mary
Just heard this and had to look it up. I come from coal country and my great grandfather was a miner.
Ready for another Offa Rex Album 👏
I feel bad for people who aren't aware of this music. It's breathtaking!
Solidarity with UMWA Miners! Fair contract now!
STEELEYE SPAN FTW! Glad to see people re-visiting these songs in the same spirit!
This is one of my favourite songs off the album, it could easily be a Decemberists song!
Heard it on the radio just now and searched for them! Haha
It's in the evening after dark,
When the blackleg miner creeps to work,
With his moleskin pants and dirty shirt,
There goes the blackleg miner!
Well he grabs his duds and down he goes
To hew the coal that lies below,
There's not a girl in this town-row
Will look at the blackleg miner.
Oh, Delaval is a terrible place.
They rub wet clay in the blackleg's face,
Around the heaps they run a race,
To catch the blackleg miner!
And, divvent gan near the Seghill mine.
Across the way they stretch a line,
To catch the throat and break the spine
Of the dirty blackleg miner.
They grab his duds and his pick as well,
They hoy them down the pit of hell.
Down you go, and fare you well,
You dirty blackleg miner!
So join the union while you may.
Don't wait untill your dying day,
For that may not be far away,
You dirty blackleg miner!
Thanks!!
Beautiful
RIP the Miners. Pitmans Daughter and Proud of it 🙂
never forget listeners, nothing worse than a scab. Union or else!
Money speaks for money. If you don't have a union at your back, who's speaking for you?
UNISON, the union for hospital workers doesn't speak for the workers at the hospital I worked at!
@@24934637 how so?
Yep
damn right!
Great song,thank you.
So hype for this album.
cant wait for their next project...
Well this is great. Love the Male/Female harmonies that start part way in.
I'm so excited about this whole album. I heard "The Queen of Hearts" and felt like I had found the best undiscovered intoxicant. Every song from this project is incredible. THANK YOU!
REALLY looking forward to seeing them at Traveler's Rest in Missoula come August!
Great version - please tour in the UK!
Look up Ryans fancy comrade.
love it
Funk SHREDS on this

Just purchased my ticket for townhall NYC can't wait 🤗
I'm stoked! How stoke are you?
Andrea Pisani I'm very stocked I saw queen of hearts performed at the Brooklyn steel Decemberists concert it was amazing 😊😊
same! what night(s) were you there? Im nuts I did VIP all three lol
Andrea Pisani ahh so lucky I was there the third day they played the hazards of love album and bit of each other album I love all their songs
ahh that was so icredible. I didn't get to see any of the Hazards tour so I NEVER thought I'd see it start to finish. Such a treat!
aw duddeee gnarly mandolin
"divint gang" means don't go, in contemporary standard English
'gan'
@@steviemac9055 Either pronunciation is OK. (Former Geordie and 10 pound pom.)
"divint gaan"
This is a great idea for an album. Maybe should have thrown some Nic Jones songs in.
english folk songs - with a rhythm section accompaniment ? it'll never catch on - trust me ! pip pip !
Ha! From Dave Mattacks. Excellent.
do your homework , mr carter .. pip pip !
on you , no thanks mate ???
Mr Mattacks, I once attended one of your London drum clinics in London, I fumbled through the basic chords of Matty Groves and you shot out of your green room saying " I resent that tune" I hope you are enjoyig the bright lights of Washington.
i likely said " i resemble that tune " [!] .. & i am " enjoying the bright lights " of Boston , MA … i also appreciate you got my attempted humour comment ref " rhy' sections plus folk music " - unlike poor mr carter … pip pip !
I'll put aside the slightly dodgy Geordie pronounciation, because I really like this.
Maybe they should have supped a few bottles of newcastle broon Ale.
Arguably the Yankie rhotic ‘r’ is close to the Durham Pitmatic ‘r’ than a Geordie non-rhotic ‘r’ though.
What instrument is she playing?
I believe it's called a Harmonium
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Fairport Convention much?
Well, this is a Steeleye Span arrangement, so... not quite. :)
Richard Thompson covered it 15 years ago though so there is a link
Please, Colin if u read this. Write songs like this, old school The Decemberists, not this country like lsat albums T_T
Mmm, sounds weird in an American accent. Also, why so bloody cheerful singing it? It's not a happy song, it's angry, where yer rage like?
You obviously are not familiar with the works of Colin Meloy or The Decemberists....
I agree. The sound must serve the lyrics. It's a beautiful and angry union song.
@@dmaroutian yep. No shit. I know most of the union songs I could find on here and can probably say any of them.
How does the membership of Steeleye Span feel about you completely ripping off their sound?
This is nothing like Steeleye Span's version, it's much better.
Ryans fancy also a good version.
Here I was indoctrinated that unions helped their workers, you mean to tell me I was lied to?
Imagine my shock.
But "Black Legs" are strike breakers/scabs - that's why the song tells them to join the union!
@@paulyd2520 so they're threatening people to join? Wow!
Before anyone gets all wound up over the lyrics or meaning behind this song, please remember that the song was written in the 19th century, possibly around 1850.
@@TheChillydog1 screw unions tho
@@chrisd2051 don’t reckon you’ll be saying that when you’re on the dole
