When I hear the magpie make that aggressive high pitched whistling sound especially in spring is when I become quite wary of the magpie. For some reason, magpies don't seem to attack me although I'm still quite wary of them.
Australians know better, we don't taunt magpies by waving crap at them. You are just challenging them and they accept. They will never forget you and will make it their mission to attack you 😂
thats right they wont forget .2 used to attack me gave them some corn now they are my mates even brang me a stick as a present
@@brettcowan5709what if you don’t have food with you
I now have a nemesis
They can be absolute shockers. I had one press home his attack while I was riding my bike through his territory. I knew where his territory was & put a rain hoodie & wraparound sunnies on under my helmet, but he still gave me buggery. I have his claw marks on my helmet as a souvenir. And, he gave me a parting shot by crapping on me during his last swoop. A very skilful flier, he scored a bullseye...But, (luckily there is also a "BUT") we have a couple of Maggies at the moment who come & serenade us at home. the BIG FELLA (alpha male) can even wolf whistle & "barks" like a dog. He gets a bit of pet mince (with added vitamins & minerals) to take back to his babies.
As for the Old Bloke in this video: I suggest he puts up an umbrella, even if the sun is shining. Might look a bit silly & The Maggie will still have a go, but at least the old bloke can be protected.
Apparently, dog food sausages cut up in small portions are better than mince as it contains calcium….good for their bones. Also small dried cat food. Look up “ Feeding The Birds at Your Table “. By Daryl Jones.
Umbrella is the best thing
Yep, good call
I am having this problem should an air cannon work better?
underrated comment
Whipp them with a belt
❤I raised a magpie. They are soooo amazing and smart! The male only swoops once his babies are born… to protect them! Ward off predators. It’s only for a few weeks while the baby is in the nest and fledging. My Magpie Cheeky was more connected to me mentally than most humans. She was incredible .. affectionate and once she was free came back with a crystal as a gift before flying off with her boy friend. They are so loyal and stay with one mate for life. I love Magpies. ❤
A senior citizen in my area for some unknown reason decided to provoke a magpie at the park. The magpie wasn't going to take his bs and proceeded to attack the man every time he returned to the park to watch the soccer. He tried wearing a hat and glasses and even used an umbrella to hide his face. But the magpies knew it was him every time and proceeded to whip his ass with constant assaults. In the end the man gave up and stopped going to the park.
Nothing like bird shot can fix, but this is Australia and the birds are protected. Aren’t you allowed to protect yourself at least
@landontucker2866 not if you antagonize the wildlife
And then the bird got shot by council for being an aggressive little shite, what a surprise.
Making eye contact is correct but they wait until you have passed you to than swoop. Maintain eye contact by walking backwards as you pass the tree there in until your far enough away they won't swoop as the threat is gone. At least 100 metres IMO. You will look stupid doing it but it works.
The local magpies swoop me and what you do, you stand still, don’t flinch, look it dead into its eyes and even lean in to the attack. When they see you have no fear they chicken out and at the last second duck away. Really the swoops are mock charges unless you show weakness and fear, that’s when they follow through. If you don’t show weakness they will only mock charge. Same applies to most other animals
@ ༒☬༒ ᴀᴛʜᴇɴᴀ ༒☬༒ ye I've seen a video of a bull male silverback gorilla charging at a man full speed and the man was just standing his ground staring at him and the gorilla stopped when he was an inch from his face and ran off.
Can of spray paint?
I'm surprised they're protected. There are plenty of magpies that DON'T attack humans. Protect those, and let humans defend themselves without consequences if the birds attack them.
Me watching this after a magpie attacks me like 7 times whilst I was on my bicycle.
First time I’ve experienced something like this since moving from England.
Welcome to australia :)
You could glue spikes onto. Your helmet.
@@geraldinegaynor1360 We use cable ties.
Yeah, it’s like Australians forget that we’re human and we won the Apex predator contest. That would never happen here in America.
@@joshnic6639 They are a protected species, and harmless enough if you use common sense. There's signs put up, councils and plenty of websites with advice on avoiding attack or damage.
Growing up here most of us get a pretty good grasp on most things that can kill or harm you, and people are always happy to give advice. To be honest, the worst part for many of us if we got our heads opened up or a chunk taken from an ear would be the embarrassment of it, getting stitched up...people will laugh at you at some point. It's the aussie way.
Magpies recognise faces and people. Feed them during the year (they love mince meat), and they will look after you. And even bring their babies to you, so you can see them. I love my magpies.
Sounds like negotiating with terrorists, haha.
It’s a bit hard to feed every magpie on a 50 mile bike circuit.
No thanks
@@Want0nS0up Lmao. I was gonna say the same thing. I get swooped by magpies along a bike path that isn't close to my house. Like I'm gonna go all that way to feed them.
Nah just end the little keint lol
Wait til Plover nesting season
Your techniques might work today and tomorrow, but all you’re really doing is making it far more aggressive for A) The Next Person
B) You and your girlfriend on the next walk
C) The following year in the mating season
Suggest you look at A) An Alternative Route
B) Trying to become friends with it through feeding it in the Winter months so it associates you as not a threat in the mating season
C) Study what makes Magpies tick.
While dangerous they are the most intelligent birds you will ever meet and are the sweetest most adorable creatures if you’re on their good side.
Think of them protecting their home and young as you would if an intruder came into your home. He’s not a bully, he’s just protecting his family.
I feel for the old man it swooped. I suggest you pass this knowledge onto him as well.
Well then they don’t seem too smart to me😂 protecting themselves from people that show no signs of threat at all. I find the other birds that don’t attack people for no reason whatsoever a bit smarter lmao
Just fcking break its nest before spring its not so hard.
@@Aftermath-Newsok but would that not make them even more mad and attack you more
Unbelievable ignorance. Some males will swoop , not all, during nesting season if they perceive you as a threat. @@efnvefnvuivteveivtvodfvdjf1494
they are protecting their young feed them they will never attack u they remember not a dumb bird by any means
Swinging things just makes it worse. When you've got 6-8 of them hitting you, you got no chance. They come from every direction while you're looking at one, the others come in
6-8? Jesus Christ 😂
Its works fine. Swining a long object scares the magpies and they will only make noises and wont attack
@galanzan6394 yeah I carry a 6 foot rope everywhere I go lol.. Swinging and randomly swiping a stick just pissed them off even more
@@the1972bulldog i ment just grab a stick and whenever it fly's up to you. Wave the stick around. And if your lucky to stumble upon a object that weighs a couple of pounds (like a rock) throw it at them with all your strength, make sure it doesnt miss. If you hit it, it will end your magpie swooping in that area forever.
@@Aftermath-News ah, no it doesn't. It just makes them more aggressive lol
Swooping season is september - daddys looking after their new born babies.
To protect yourself, either use an umbrella when walking, or make friends with them - feed them mince of even better love meal worms from the pet shop. Once you feed them they are your friend forever.
This is the trouble with people who have no frigging idea of how to deal with AUSTRALIAN wildlife as the Australian Magpie is not related to birds in the UK or Europe. Get a grip on the fact that Australia is not the northern hemisphere and maybe have a chat with some indigenous people for some tips. The Australian magpie (Cracticus tibicen) is a native Australian bird and is protected under the State Wildlife Legislation (Nature Conservation Act 1992). It is a serious offence to harm magpies and penalties apply for attempting to harm them for those suggesting such measures.
As a wildlife carer:
You are so wrong and full of it dude.
I'm glad you were nice to it and tried to reason with it.
Missed the part where you stopped it

When a boss fight is a bird:
can i use a belt with a kitchen knife on the end?
An umbrella will keep the birds off and block the sun as well.
why is this guy talking to a bird, it does not understand
The bird is squawking at him in bird language too.
swinging things ain't the problem, makes it worse
Feeding them proper food ( not mince or bread ) has been known to stop them swooping .
Its generally the males that swoop as they are trying to show their mate they can protect the nest
When the chicks leave the nest the swooping drops right off and they leave you alone. But waving keys at them or swinging things at them only makes them more aggresive
Don’t feed wildlife. These ******s are not pets
I just wind up and smack tf out of em, they usually don’t bother me afterwards, or move for that matter.
A magpie killed a baby ?
Imagine how much of a power move it would be to grab one in mid air. They'll know to never mess with you if that happened 😭😭
dawg i tried got my hand pecked
feed them somtimes they wont attack u
they will hunt you down for the rest of their lives bro, they won't forget it
they have great memories ans reckonise faces for the next time yoou approach so trying to grab them mid flight , and you dont get them , they will see you are a threat and continue to attack
I made friends with the local Magpie family - give them an occasional treat a biscuit or a salami and they will never attack you. They are fascinating birds and friends for life.
soooo........you're "paying for protection". lol
@@coppulor6500 yeh pretty much 🤣
Spot on
Staring at them while walking backwards fearless is the best way to prevent them going in for another swoop

best solution i have seen is an umbrella
have to maker friends with then
You learn you big berk, trying to intimidate a bird 😂. They learn faces… that’s why you need to look at them. Not in glasses and hats.
walk I different route, your making it worse pissing them off
By you waving things around you become an instant threat, just go about your business and they won’t think your a threat, just throw some food on the ground and you instantly become their best friend
Better yet. Destroy the nest before spring
@@Aftermath-Newswhat does that do
As if all these people coming up with stupid techniques like making friends with them or feeding them😂 I’m not doing anything to their babies so if they try to swoop me and get their beak punched off that’s on them. It’s a pretty good strategy and they don’t swoop after ahaha
I swear mate, I barely have food in my fridge like hell am I going to let a damn bird extort me for resources like some mafioso. We're not even talking an elegant big bird like an eagle or the one from sesame street, a damn magpie?! Nah im alright, weres my rifle.
i have a couple of magpies down my street 2 real assholes .i fed them corn now they are 2 cool dudes.even brang me a stick as a present they are very intelligent and have a great memory so if u try scare them they will remember and F. u. up....
Explain all that to a bird Pom
When I raided to school it was funny watching them hitting my helmet
So, people have pointed this out before but you teach them that you are a good person and not someone to fear they will literally leave you alone. By scaring them like you did in this video you are actually just reinforcing the bad behavior.
Protect your face and stay in close proximity. Offer them something, unsalted nuts and seeds, fruit and cooked unseasoned meat and eventually their behavior will change... not just for the one bird for the whole family as they gather, they will communicate all of the new knowledge including that you aren't a threat to them or their nest.
The more people in the area interreacting with the bird/s in a friendly manner the quicker the whole population will begin to change their behavior. The more birds you are able to interreact with the faster this will happen. The swooping behavior is a learned behavior and its meant to be used on creatures with two front facing eyes... Who has that? well... We do of course. Its a behavior that can be retrained/relearned to benefit both us and the bird. Saving them the energy of protecting their nest/area from a non-threat and keeping our eyes in our eye holes.
To change their behavior, you will need to change your own first.
This is why animal lovers should be thrown inside a jail cell. I am not wasting my food on these local pests. Wacking it with a stick can make it backoff. Or just destroy its nest with a rock before spring.
@@Aftermath-News couldn't have made me shake my head in disgust more then you just did now. I hope you lose both eyes to them...
@@TruFrag well guess what i destroy there nest with a rock so they wont attack me cuz they dont have anything to protect for
U do realise the possibility of being able to hit them or find their nest is quite low right? Hurting 1 of them isn't going to change anything, There are 50 - 100 in a flock if u hurt them the news will spread and u are toast they will come and swoop u in every direction every time they see u lol I won't be surprised if 5-6 attacks u at once u will be screwed lol@@Aftermath-News
'a baby got killed by one of.these'? Really
What would happen if you use a sling shot just a question could that keep them away from attacking you if your scared of them period ??
Ya see I have a lake near my house and I love to walk around it but there's this magpie that sweep people in the smack damn middle of the path so this really helped alot
its funny , I see people getting swooped around where I live all the time , but not me , must be because I talk to them all years round , give them tidbits when I have some , they sit and watch me go on by and even bring a young 1 down to say hallo , like they are saying , not this 1 , he,s fine

Magpies don’t attack you forever but only for six weeks while they have babies in the nest. They are not dangerous and do not aim for your eyes. They do NOT kill babies. Their song is beautiful. These two people are not Australian. Just don’t go near the trees where they live. Walk around the swooping area.

Hell yeah bro same 👊
Let’s all be honest we are only here because of Volk 😂😂
Just feed them. I’ve raised a baby magpie and they are absolute angels😌 they’re playful, affectionate and loving. The only reason these magpies are swooping is because they’re protecting their babies. They’re not bullies, they don’t need to learn manners, you just need to respect the fact that they’re doing what they’re doing to protect their own. Go magpies!
shut the hell up, Im not going to waste my food and energy feeding some damn disease ridden birds, Ill sooner shoot them and their babies if they swoop any of my family members. I can be a territorial arse too.
Hell no. A wack woth a stick can finish the job in 5 seconds.
No way!
@@Aftermath-News shut up bro
Baseball bat
Australian Magpies are a unique genus in the Crow family. They are not closely related to European and American Magpies, which may also defend their nests, but are smaller and much less dangerous than their Australian namesakes. I have been swooped by Mockingbirds here in America, but they can do little harm. Those Australian Magpies on the other hand, with their razor sharp beaks, are something else all together. I understand the gentleman's anger, if I lived there I think I would carry a baseball bat, then have a rear view mirror on a helmet. As soon as one of those fuckers was just about to make contact, I would turn, and then it's batter's up. Swing batter. Then get the hell out before the cops show up. Cheers.
lol
why cant you just shoot the magpies?
They are a protected species and depending upon where you live, penalties can be up to 7 years in jail and a $235,600 fine. Is that a good enough reason?
this is not america hunny lol. They are a native bird and protected species . Poeple here dont walk around with guns in their pockets or strapped to there arm like a shotgun under a long sleeved shirt lol
Is a Glock-19 a better option?
