Jasmine Guy is what you call an actress. She is world's apart from Whitley Marion Gilbert Wayne. What I will always remember about Whitley is how classy she was. It was nice seeing a young black woman in college going after her life. And dressed to the nines while doing it. She represented the big sister I wanted to have.

@myidolgwen359 For 5 out of 6 seasons. Whitley was high maintenance, beautiful but bratty, alot of times annoying, ignorant to the real world valley girl who was very unrelatable to the average black person struggling to survive in college. I love Whitley but alot of the time she NOT CLASSY all the time. She was a high maintenance girl wrapped in a beautiful package that many people couldn't stand.
@@Tampabruh Everything you said is true. That's exactly why the character went through a complete deconstruction by the end of the series. From the 1st season to the 6th Whitley was growing granted it was baby steps at times, but it was growth none the less. Remember the "Apartheid" episode when Kim couldn't take the scholarship from Orange Glow? Everyone was in the auditorium taking about sanctions, boycotts and whatnot. Remember when one of the South African students spoke about his country and Whitley said "Do you know any Black people that live decently, any at all?" The young man proceeded to say that for her it was inconceivable. That was such a defining moment in her character. And there were many others. The little boy she befriended at the youth center, the blatant racism she received at the jewelry store. She was consistently getting information on the world not being as plush and inviting as she thought it was.
@iluvmyboba Yeap don't get me wrong. Whitley WAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE MY FAVORITE CHARACTER but Jasmine Guy hated playing the character at times. They she and Kadeem Harrison was pitched a spin off series but Jasmine Guy didn't want to participate in it! To me Whitley could do no wrong. This show honestly is SLEPTED ON and underappreciated! Nearly every character was unique and brought something insightful and interesting to the show!
The evolution of her character was so expertly done. Definitely one of my favorite characters and shows of all time.
She really is AMAZING and doesn't get enough credit for her work. She should have been flooded with roles.

She really killed it in that role, but that whole audition process and giving them a huge contract to sign in a room without knowing if they got the part, and probably without representation seems really shady. I am glad it worked out for her.

Jasmine always looked older than her age imo. In ADW she was in her early 20s and quite frankly she looked mid 30s to me; she never looked as young as the other student cast members, she looked to be the same age as the teachers. Idky but that mature look on her was always attractive to me, even know with all the lines and wrinkles it lends such a dignified graceful beauty to her face.

It’s normal to get older. She seems perfectly aware that she does not look the same as she did during her “Different World” days. If she had went out and gotten a bunch of ridiculous surgery ppl would have something to say then too. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

I never saw or heard Jasmine Guy as Jasmine Guy until decades after A Different World and I was legitimately confused by everything I heard. She is *nothing* like Whitley Gilbert, and I think that is remarkable for a television actor and character. I took a class many years ago called 'Acting for the Camera' taught by a longtime TV director and he said most actors we see on TV are typecast to play roles who resemble their own personalities and mannerisms because unlike theatre and film, TV series don't allow time for rehearsing and fully realizing characterizations that are very different than actors' own natures, and so it just makes most sense to emphasize real traits and incorporate those into characters' traits. Whitley Gilbert is exaggerated in a lot of ways, appropriate to a sitcom, but she also feels fully realized and developed without interruptions by the real Guy's persona and manner and attitude and inflection. It's really remarkable. I do wish she'd been more present onscreen in the decades that have followed. I can imagine her turning in award-winning film performances in both comedies and dramas.

Back in the 90’s my peers used to make me feel bad about being dark skinned…..now I don’t.
My peers used to insult me while constantly running their hands through my hair saying it was theirs. Their low self esteem definitely was not my fault. My appearance was how I was born. Still looking good years later despite those same peers wishing me harm. With all the hair and skin lightneners purchased these days to mimic the natural appearance of that young girl, you'd hope their attitudes would have improved now that they can pretend to look like anyone they secretly despised for being BORN with light skin and long wavy hair.

@@lemurianchick not that I've ever heard of. Yeah, she slurs alot and I personally think she drinks alot. If you ever watch the I review she did with kadeem and other cast--it was a radio show that was televised--the radio crew brought champagne and she couldn't get to that bottle fast enough and she drank the most and got sloshed. So sad that shes fucking herself up with botox. She wants to forever look like Whitley I guess.

It sounds as though she was pressured to sign a contract. It's not good business to be handed a 2 inch thick contract and not be allowed to take some time w/a lawyer to look it over. The average person can't possibly understand the wording of the detail's in those things. Having said that,it looks like it worked out for her.

To me, Whitley was the black Nellie Olsen from LHOTP. Beautiful, strong as hell, privileged, but in the end, vulnerable. That is the formula for an endearing and enduring character.

Youth is a pretty good deal, but AGE (staying in the land of the living with all of it's challenges) well, that's a beautiful thing. For you age critics, TRY TO KEEP LIVING and if you do, you too will change physically, but if you are not too critical of life, YOU MIGHT EVEN COME TO ENJOY IT and enjoy others too, even as they gracefully change. I looked into the mirror and saw someone I thought I knew. I'm sure it was me, but it was a different me. BUT I'M SURE IT WAS ME
