    Priority need can seem confusing - how do you know if someone's in priority need?
    It is important to say that this is not legal advice - homelessness is a legal issue, you should always seek qualified legal advice if you are affected by homelessness. These videos are simply there to raise awareness of homelessness issues.

    I can’t thank you enough for making these videos the council and police are clearly incompetent in this country and trying to withhold peoples rights they are giving out illegal CONtracts in Durham calling them a license when they are actually a tenancy by definition in law after the police illegally evict people now Durham Council pass you to 6 different people then pass me to a Complaex needs worker who ignored all the clients Compalex needs them tried to force me to give up 12 month temporary contract and force me to sign a 56 day one as I wouldn’t move to a town where my abusers family lived they are all breaking the law ! They didn’t protect my belongings and now all my valuables I’m trying to get back police and council ignore you again!

    Hi I was given a high priority need based on my disabilities and also my mum being put on my form with me she is an older woman older person with medical problems I do understand that if you don’t get approved for priority housing the wait time can be 10 years or longer we’re is priority need could be housed in as little as 3 months good luck everyone 😊

      it also varies massively with whereabouts your applying to - in some areas like London even when you have high medical priority people have to wait years.

    I am going through the situation mentioned where Childrens services are pushing me over to the local council who are trying to push this back to child services. I have a 13 year old son with severe autism and needing an adapted home.

    great video as always, thank you! quick random thought i wanted to share about gatekeeping... simply that the (massive?) amount of money local authorities spend on lawyers to deny people of their right to social housing, could literally be used to build more social housing...
    would be interesting to see council audits and check how much they are spending for this purpose of gatekeeping and how many social homes that could build.

      I can only imagine Christopher - all I can say is try to find a competent professional to help you out - your local CAB may know of solicitors who can get legal aid for homelessness cases - to take on a local authority on your own is too much to expect people to do.

    Hi im pregnant due in December and i have been in a air bnb since july. I have not heard anything from the council or housing officer since july and the air bnb is to expensive for me to afford. Housing benefits and universal credits can’t help me as im a full time student. I need advice please

      It's very difficult for students, I would contact your local MP and councillors to maximise the chance of getting detailed advice from your local housing options service. You could also speak to your college / university as they may have some experience of this situation with other people.

    Thank you for the video. Is pregnancy in itself (without being homeless ) considered a priority need?

    • @homelessnessbestpractice
      @homelessnessbestpractice  2 года назад +3

      Hi Emad, so if you're not homeless or threatened with homelessness pregnancy wouldn't be relevant in terms of making a homelessness application under Part 7, but I'm guessing you're thinking in terms of applying to social housing under what's called Part 6 of the Housing Act with a pregnant member of the household.
      This is harder to answer as each council can create their own rules to a certain extent around how they allocate their social housing stock, but in the areas I know of, pregnancy wouldn't be relevant at that stage and babies don't count towards how many bedrooms you're eligible for until they pass their first birthday.
      But as I say, every area is different so you will need to google 'housing allocation policy' and your local council's name and look through the policy itself. Once you have the policy document just search for the word 'pregnant' and 'pregnancy' to see where it is taken into account.

    Hi Mike. Hope your are well. I spoke with you before about my case. Thanet have accepted prevention duty but have said 3 years in borough before social housing. The d.v bail case they have stated get a injunction BUT renting when disabled is appearing to be impossible , i have to be ground floor or council wont approve anything with stairs so finding with my affordability is impossible. Section 21 ends 2 Aug and it's all driving me loopy , any tips on rents for disabled please as I'm aware of laws of no discrimination but I get no further info as soon as I share my status. Eek thanks Mike x

    Since March 2024 we are in b&b arranged by local council, my father who is 79 with me having many health issues, my 2 children under 10 and my wife. Please guide us what should we do, my housing officer doesn't even reply to my email. I have requested for SAR and they said it will take a month to reply still awaiting.
    Please advise anything, what do you think how much time it will take. I have provided all the medical evidence to the council.

      that's really bad. It's a long shot, but i'm aware of a case at the moment when someone spent their savings due to poor advice from the council - it looks like the council will reimburse a lot of the money. There would be a number of obstacles in the way though for - in the case i'm referring to the poor advice was in writing so the council couldn't deny it, but if the advice to you was just over the phone then you'd struggle to get anywhere with it. There is also the time limitations on making complaints - most councils won't look at complaints more than 12 months old unless you only just found out about the failure. One thing that wouldn't do any harm would be to formally request a copy of all of your records from Shelter and the council to see if there is anything in writing that you could go on, and if there is, you may be able to find an advocate / solicitor who would help you make the claim. But as i say, it would be very difficult to succeed on, and it sounds like you've got a whole new set of stresses for the time being.

      @homelessnessbestpractice Thank you so much for the reply it's been nearly two years now, and I think because I'm currently about to be made homeless again, it would with a toddler it would just add to the stress. Can you please advice me basically I’m a single dad to my 6 years old son as of recent court proceedings started by the social services themselves and I have joined as 2 responded due to which my son was removed from the mother now placed with me and as of last court decisions social services has no longer parental responsibility to my son only I do and during past 3 months we have been placed in temporary placement by them due to me renting a room in a shared accommodation which was deemed unsuitable for my son to be placed me with me there to they gave as a supported housing placement for 3 months now due to the cost of it and having no parental responsibility decided to move as into hotel and for the past 3 months I’ve applied for housing now for homeless applications and being sent back and forth from one council to another then back to social services and ultimately nobody is taking responsibility to house us been advised by shelter to go to tribunal and by social services to find a solicitor who would prove them that duty lies with them and now we’re stuck in hotel with not knowing how to go about it now as it seems I tried everything so far with no luck.

    • @homelessnessbestpractice
      @homelessnessbestpractice  11 месяцев назад

      @@JC-ce8uw Ideally best first step is to find local service that can help you approach your local council, but the first thing you need to ask them is how often they help people to make homelessness applications because some homelessness organisations don't actually help people make homelessness applications. Next step is to email your council's housing department and ask for help with housing and explain your situation. That triggers s.184 of the Housing Act 1996 which is the gateway into the statutory assistance you're eligible for. Trouble is, loads of councils routinely don't follow the law, which is why you need a competent advice service helping you from the start.

    • @JC-ce8uw
      @JC-ce8uw 11 месяцев назад

      @@homelessnessbestpractice in terms of local services please can you give me some examples? As I've tried contacting charities or homelessness organisations like shelter and they just say they're not a frontline service.

    • @homelessnessbestpractice
      @homelessnessbestpractice  11 месяцев назад +1

      @@JC-ce8uw unfortunately it's a lottery as to whether there will be a decent service - if you go to Citizens Advice Bureau they are unlikely to be able to help but they may know some local services that do that kind of thing. If you're experiencing abuse from family then you can approach the IDVA service (Independent Domestic Violence Advisor). Again they may not have access to specialist housing support, but they may be able to point you in the right direction, and there's some other stuff they might be able to help you with as well.

    I believe priority need during pregnancy ONLY applies if you are also homeless aswell as pregnant.

    • @homelessnessbestpractice
      @homelessnessbestpractice  7 месяцев назад

      yes, priority need is a term restricted to the part of the Housing Act 1996 that deals homelessness (Part 7). A similar term is used in the housing register under Part 6, either priority or medical priority, but that's not what this video is referring to.
