You can create your own air pump adjuster with a bit of air line tube, a t-junction and an air valve. The key is to put the t-junction immediately after the pump, one line of the "t" goes into the filter, the other line off the tee goes into the air valve. Add some tubing on the other end of the valve to act as a muffler. You can adjust the air flow to your sponge filter with the valve and instead of creating back pressure that can damage the air pump, it simply bleeds the excess air away through the open tube muffler placed after the valve.
I’ve used mostly nothing but the aquatop sponge filters in my betta tanks. Love them great product and doesn’t cost a lot! Great to see them get recognized let’s me know I’m doing something right with my collection of betta.

Hey - congrats on the new betta! At some point it might be worth while moving him to a larger tank. We usually recommend at least a 2.5 gallon, but a 5 gallon is better. Those tanks can often be bought with a built in filter. There aren’t many filters for a tank that small except small sponge filters with small air pump?

I never take it apart and rinse the part with the gravel or remove the sponge like I do with my large sponge filters. With my large ones I remove the sponge and squeeze it in a bucket of tank water. Hello! I am upgrading my betta fish to a 10 gallon tank and Ive been searching for a filter. I am really interested on the Forza 5-15 filter but I just have a few questions about how you clean them and if they have certain filter cartridges.
I purchased the AquaTop Classic Flow sponge filter for a 3.5 gallon tank. There is not enough space to add an air stone within the bottom container area. My question is can I attach an air stone that is just exposed under the filter and sit it on top of the substrate (gravel)? All of the modifications I've seen have the air stone inside the filter and I just wanted to make sure this was ok.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics First, thank you! So should I just use the sponge filter without an air stone or should I get a different sponge filter to accommodate an air sponge? At the moment, there is too much flow with just the sponge. I am getting a lower powered air pump, but I would still like smaller bubbles. My understanding is it's usually better to have an air stone with bettas to help reduce flow.
i have 15 gallon tank with HOB Dophin h800 filter and eheim 2213 canister filter. currently i have 6 fancy Goldfish and im planning to put 1 betta fish. is it possible to keep them together??. thanks for answer.
I probably wouldn't mix the two because the betta likes water in the upper 70s and the activity of the goldfish would probably stress it out. Also, the goldfish will most likely out-compete it for food.
HELP! My neighbor moved and I inherited their male Betta. It is in a small 1 +/- gallon tank and there is algae in the hang off the back filter and the replace able filter piece is very green. Additionally, there is algae in the rocks at the bottom and on the top of the castle piece. There is also a working heater in the tank. I'd like to rehab this event and feel that starting over with new everything would be the way to go. How do I manage the transition to a new tank and equipment? I successfully had Calico fantails in my pond in PA for 15 years but am not knowledgeable with regard to fish kept in tanks. Many, many thank in advance.
All great questions. If you want to kill the tank up a little that is fine, but you would probably be better off not breaking it completely down. There are beneficial microbes on the surfaces of everything, including the filter. If you break it all down and clean it you may disrupt the bacteria. You might try cleaning off the decorations one week and then changing out the filter media in a couple weeks?

Or im looking at getting a new 3.5 tank right now with the plans of buying an adjustable filter but, not sure how to put on the Forza without keeping a lid off. Im worried about my betta jumping out any recommendations on setups?
I'm not sure if it will work. Usually most tanks have a cut-out on the lid for filters and cords. It's a fairly narrow filter which might lend netter to it fitting the curve.
Good morning, I have two betta one male and female however I can't put them together as I tried once and had to immediately separate them back to 2 tanks. My question is I have a 10 gallon tank and would like for them both to be in one tank but I know I have to divide them. What is the best divider, filter and heater I can use to put them in the same tank but to be divided?
Love the video! But with the AquaTop Sponge filter is it just the sponge filter and the air pump or do I need other stuff for my betta? Sorry I’m very new to fish keeping world..
Hello! I currently have a 5 gallon with a TopFin Bettaflo filter. It's a carbon filter, but I wanted to know- With any of these filters you reviewed, do they require cartridges that need monthly changing? I'm pretty new to the whole betta keeping thing. I would definitely prefer to find a filter thats a little less demanding then buying overpriced cartridges every few weeks. That being said, I also have a planted tank, and I wanted to know if the carbon filter cartridges are harmful to the plants?
The HOB filter looks interesting. I'm wanting to merge two small betta tanks into one 10g with a divider (or possibly space for three) , but would like to ensure that the water flow makes it through the barrier. My thought was to have the HOB power head on one end (for output), but the intake "plumbed" to pull from the other side. Has anyone seen this done before? Interested to hear comments.
What pressure should u have the pump? I’m thinking about getting a betta and I’m a beginner and I don’t wanna rush into anything so I’ve been doing my research for a couple months just to educate myself. So if anyone could give me some tips on, food, temperature, pump pressure, plants, etc. Thanks!
Hi new here, but new to keeping fish. I'm moving later in the year and I'm going to be resetting my 29 gal community tank. I want to get a betta. I'm playing around with the idea of using both a sponge filter and a smaller hang on the back to reduce the flow. It seems to me that I can use like a 10 gal hang filter since the sponge will do more than half the work. How does that sound to you?
Hey Jason. I am a first time betta keeper. My friends granddaughter had it, wasn't doing well. So now I have him in a 20g long. His temp is about 80 degrees and I have the tank half filled with water with an aquarium co op small sponge filter. He is always at the top. Is this due to the 80 degree temp? Due to higher temp causes low oxygen levels? He has tail rot i am trying to fix for him because of his previous owner neglect. Should I put a 2nd sponge filter? Lower the temp or put on a hang on back tidal 30? Will the hang on back work with the lower water level? Or will filling the tank full of more water make it better or worse for him? I value your advice. Thank.you
I don’t think you need another filter. It’s common for many bettas to stay at the top. 80 degrees is very comfortable for a betta do that won’t be an issue.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I must be doing something wrong. I sent you photos of Elmos tank. Maybe I have too many things in his tank. Have 2 floating logs, a few leaves that stick to the glass, and some hideaways for him. What is the secret to keeping a betta happy?
We have a little 6.5 gallon tank that our betta is in, we got him about a week & 1/2 ago, and lately he hasnt been swimming around and being all silly, hes just been floating at the bottom corner not really swimming around and i noticed if i turn off the filter and water in the tank is still he comes right out and starts swimming around again
Maybe the filtration is too powerful for the fish to swim.. or possibly it has swim bladder disease due to overfeeding (peas can help with that also fasting). Make sure have water heater also in the tank sometimes due to cold water they can get constipated plus over good for them to have warm water. Plus don’t forget the water conditioner everytime u change water in that aquarium..
It will usually trap most stuff that gets in the water column, but not anything that falls into the gravel. It's probably the best filter for pulling stuff out of the water though.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics they only 5-6 months old and flow not to powerful its lowered 3/4’s down. weird the betta and guppies all gravitate to it and its a 20 long so weird
For a sponge filter we use some air line tubing from the air pump to the sponge filter. Once the sponge filter is placed in the water we turn the air pump on.
New betta fish owner here! :) What is the best filter for a 5 gallon tank? The filter that came with Vector’s tank is too strong and makes it difficult for him to swim around. Any suggestions? :(
I know next to nothing when it comes to sponge filters. Does size matter? If I wanted to put a few of those tiny little sponge filters in my 210 gallon (because they are easier to hide), in my mind, that wouldn't be big enough. But, I don't know how they work. Maybe it is. What says you?
In that size tank they would probably just be sponge/airstones. In your setup they would probably do a little for mechanical filtration, but mostly serve as backup biological filtration in case your main filters broke. However, you'd probably need something the size of (3) ATI Hydro V's to make that work, and I doubt you want those showing in your tank?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Not particularly, no. I currently have two of the biggest ones Aquarium Co-Op sells in addition to the Aquaclear 110, the two Marineland 350s and the two Marineland C-360 canisters. But they're so intrusive visually speaking. That's why I asked if the small ones might work. I pretty much knew the answer before I asked but, like I said. I am still wet behind the ears when it comes to sponge filters.
You don't really need an adjustable air pump. You can buy an inline flow adjuster that works the same way or if you have multiple betta tanks just get a gang valve for a larger air pump and split the air to all you tanks.
i need help. i bought a Volcano led light an it came w a tube do i need a air pump to make it bubble can any one help me an if i do. watch pump do i need can any send a link to it
@@jamesgreen9372 They are really inexpensive, you will only clean the muck off the sponge part, maybe a little squeeze once a month. I had to weigh mine down with a couple of stones until the sponge was soaked. They are very unobtrusive
My female Betta have 70 ltrs heavy planted tank with 2 hillstream loach & 2 simease algae eater with 1500 ltrs per hour filtration......water is super clean..... And my female Betta loves to play in flow..... I have divided water flow in 4 different directions so there is no very strong water flow.....
Mind kinda like to play with the current and always head to filter to play with it When i try cover with DIY plastic bottle method, my betta attempt to jump on it and enter the filter Had panicked moment there
I ended up getting the forza 5 to 15 for two of my tanks. I like that the flow adjustment actually makes a difference. My tanks are all planted, so i took a dremel to the filter cartridge to remove the carbon section. I recommend this video quite often in the fb group 'betta keepers'..
@@danielsiti6085 Are those Forza 5-15 filters good for a 5.5 gallon Betta tank? I was thinking of getting it but I'[m scared there's going to be too much current.
I would go with the Seachem Tidal 55. You can slow the flow so it is appropriate for the Betta and still have a filter large enough for the tank if you ever switch to different types of fish.
Hey quick question. I have a 3.7 gallon tank with a betta and I was thinking of buying a sponge filter for the tank but I've read that I should also get an air pump. Hello! I am upgrading my betta fish to a 10 gallon tank and Ive been searching for a filter. I am really interested on the Forza 5-15 filter but I just have a few questions about how you clean them and if they have certain filter cartridges.
I like them because they usually come with a little piece of sponge (reuseable) and I add a little filter floss. No specific cartridges to buy.
Hi. What filter u use before upgrading? I assume u had 5 gallon before that 10gallon tank. Was the filter from old tank works great?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics just wandering what is a filter foss ? Thanks
For the mini sponge what would I use to connect it?
Th ere are nano air pumps out there if you have a small tank.
Will the hang on back filter work good on a 3 gallon vertical tank or should I get a sponge filter?
Either one works
Thank you so much!
I probably wouldn't do that only because the water flow would now be coming through the bottom of the filter and not the sponge itself.
Back when I was doing the betta thing I used HMF's mostly.
i have 15 gallon tank with HOB Dophin h800 filter and eheim 2213 canister filter. currently i have 6 fancy Goldfish and im planning to put 1 betta fish. is it possible to keep them together??. thanks for answer.
I probably wouldn't mix the two because the betta likes water in the upper 70s and the activity of the goldfish would probably stress it out. Also, the goldfish will most likely out-compete it for food.
Wow thanks ☯️☺👑
Would these work for a 10 Gallon I have a fluval 30 Hob with turndown valve and still think it's stong
We run them on 10 gallons and they work well.
Quick question..I've been doing my homework for days now..I kept going back to a certain filter but then stupid me realizes it wasn't going to fit the back of it...
But then I came across this. ,,,,,.and I think I'm going to replace my flirtations cause I like how easy this is..
I'm actually ready to order...
But I have a questions
Will I need to replace it often..and if not how often will I have to clean it..also is that all I need
👋 thnx I might grab a few
Can I use a 20 gallon sponge filter with a 20 gallon pump for my 20 gallon beta tank? Please respond
That should work just fine!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Also, how often should I do a water change on it if its just the betta? Or do you think I should put other fish with it?
Cannot see the brand or model on my small screen, if you are going to recommend something then please tell us what it is.
Aquatop Forza 5-15. There is more info about them in the description as well.
Will the Forza 5-15 work on a circular tank with a lid?
Check out Life With Pets. She sells the best tank dividers. One heater shouldn’t be an issue.
Is biological, mechanical and chemical filtration a feature of either the hang on back or sponge filter? Is chemical filtration (carbon) necessary?
We don’t use any chemical filtration. The bio and mechanical is more a function of the type of media used.
I have to change my filter and had to ask which option was the best for my 55 gallon sorority tank... Any advice?.
I’d go Seachem Tidal 55
do you put the air stone in this mini filter like you do for the bigger ones?
No, there isn't enough room to do so, but I have found the bubbles to be of perfect size anyway. :-)
Love the video! But with the AquaTop Sponge filter is it just the sponge filter and the air pump or do I need other stuff for my betta? Sorry I’m very new to fish keeping world..
You just need the sponge filter, pump, and enough air line to connect the sponge filter to the pump!
I don't use carbon in any of my tanks - I just fill the compartment with filter floss. Carbon is generally not harmful to plants.
Does the small air pump need to be like in the middle of a tank to work best and move the oxygen around or placing it in a corner is fine?
Depends on the size of the tank, but if it is less than three feet, putting it in a corner usually works fine.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks!
Wheres the filter cartridge at i need a new one soon and can find it anywhere thats the right size
Is the sponge filter only good for oxygenating the water? Or does it help remove nitrates as well
No filter really helps remove nitrates efficiently. For that it's either water changes and/or lots of plants!
I have a 3 gallon tank for a betta (haven’t gotten the betta yet) would the first filter you showed be alright for that?
Definitely - all the filters shown here would be great for that setup.
My betta is in a 15g tank planted and has a sunsun 5watt hob filter
What pressure should u have the pump? I’m thinking about getting a betta and I’m a beginner and I don’t wanna rush into anything so I’ve been doing my research for a couple months just to educate myself. So if anyone could give me some tips on, food, temperature, pump pressure, plants, etc. Thanks!
Lower pressure is better. If you get one with an adjustable flow you can dial it in for the fish you are keeping.
So I’m getting a sponge filter for my 29 gallon betta tank, but what’s a safe heater, I’m having trouble finding one. Thank you so much lol.
For a 29 gallon take a look at the Eheim heaters. I have had good luck with them.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I’m seeing a lot of bad reviews for this heater, are you sure it’s a good and safe product?
Hi new here, but new to keeping fish. I'm moving later in the year and I'm going to be resetting my 29 gal community tank. I want to get a betta. I'm playing around with the idea of using both a sponge filter and a smaller hang on the back to reduce the flow. It seems to me that I can use like a 10 gal hang filter since the sponge will do more than half the work. How does that sound to you?
That is a possibility. Just makes sure the filter will fit on the back of the tank over the rim.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics ok thank you.
Do u think that small sponge filter alone can work for a 10 gallon tank?
Sure
Does hang on back gets all the fish poop and collects it on the filter media....im planning to have an aquarium
It will usually trap most stuff that gets in the water column, but not anything that falls into the gravel. It's probably the best filter for pulling stuff out of the water though.
why do all my bettas get stuck to my intake? i have an all on one so its overflow but theres a plastic mesh protector in front
If the flow is really strong that can happen. It also tends to happen if the betta is tired or is getting older.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics they only 5-6 months old and flow not to powerful its lowered 3/4’s down. weird the betta and guppies all gravitate to it and its a 20 long so weird
What temperature do you keep you fishroom at?
As I assume you don't heat each individual tank.
I keep the room temp around 80 degrees, which keeps just about all our tanks at 78.
I have a 30 gallon fish tank and i’m planning to add dividers into it but what is a good filter for that size for a budget
How do you connect the sponge to the air filter? Does the air filter need to be plugged in?
For a sponge filter we use some air line tubing from the air pump to the sponge filter. Once the sponge filter is placed in the water we turn the air pump on.
Prime Time Aquatics Thank you so much for the response!
New betta fish owner here! :) What is the best filter for a 5 gallon tank? The filter that came with Vector’s tank is too strong and makes it difficult for him to swim around. Any suggestions? :(
The ones mentioned here are good!
Prime Time Aquatics Okay thank you so much!! :D
did you not even watch the video? it answers that question lol
Ya, it's just usually easier to have an adjustable pump for most people. Especially if they only have one tank.
I currently have the betta bow 1 tank.
If i desperate my tank in half for two bettas can i get away with using one filter or do i have to put 1 on each side
Usually when people do that they put one small sponge filter in each section.
Are there any recommendation for a sponge filter
i need help. i bought a Volcano led light an it came w a tube do i need a air pump to make it bubble can any one help me an if i do. watch pump do i need can any send a link to it
Yes - any small air pump will do. One with an adjustable flow is even better.
How often do you change your filter
Depends on the tank - the guidelines for us is if the floss is dirty brown it gets replaced. The sponge maybe once every couple weeks?
Two questions: A) How hard is it to clean that little sponge filter? B) It looks like the sponge is in two parts. If so, why is that? Thanks, Jim
They are pretty easy. Joanna cleans them fairly quickly. The bottom part can hold additional media, while the top part can do mechanical filtration.
Prime Time Aquatics , Thanks! I will look into those. Your help is appreciated, Jim
Sounds like a nice setup!
With the first filter do I still need to buy a water pump to go with it?
You only need a pump for the small sponge filter.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics what am I suppose to do about snail poop, it just stays at the bottom of the tank so it doesn’t get in the filter?
I just ordered that sponge and pump for my 5 gallon, one betta tank... We'll see. He absolutely hates current. This will be interesting...
Mind kinda like to play with the current and always head to filter to play with it
When i try cover with DIY plastic bottle method, my betta attempt to jump on it and enter the filter
Had panicked moment there
I ended up getting the forza 5 to 15 for two of my tanks.
This cleans the water correct?
They sure do!
I've found low flow means low filtration.
Tie a light knot to adjust air flow
Forza 5/15 best small tank filter imo.
What is the best filter for betta in a 40 gallon tank?
I would go with the Seachem Tidal 55. You can slow the flow so it is appropriate for the Betta and still have a filter large enough for the tank if you ever switch to different types of fish.
Can I just have a sponge filter on a tank
Sure
Is that aluminum foil on the back of your tank at 4:18?
It looks like it right? :-) She used a grayish blue paper on that tank.
I like bay-ta's and bay-ta accessories
:-)
What about for a 1 gallon ?
I would go with the little sponge filter.
Prime Time Aquatics thx but I just got a new 5 gallon tank
Prime Time Aquatics is it fine if they go like a day or 3 without a filter ?
Hey quick question. I have a 3.7 gallon tank with a betta and I was thinking of buying a sponge filter for the tank but I've read that I should also get an air pump. Since the tank is pretty small and I have plants in the tank would I still need to purchase an air pump? If yes, do you recommend any specific air pumps? Thank you! Love your videos :)
You would need an air pump - I'm not sure on the brand, but make sure whatever pump you get has an adjustable air flow.
Before I watch the video I would like to put my two cents in. For me , the best filter for my betta is an airstone powered undergravel filter.
That works too!
