      @@Eben18 we rented a truck for that short trip to the amtrak location nearest to us in California. Renting a truck for a few hours is pretty inexpensive. For our pick-up trip, we actually happened to rent an apartment across the street from amtrack, so we used a handtruck to cart the boxes over a few at a time on our own!

      @@Eben18 You can either hire some one who has a personal truck service that they use to move people's stuff. Sometimes they advertise on craigslist or in the news paper. Or you can hire a moving company in your area who charges by the hour, who will load it up for you and deliver it to amtrak for you. Just go with them to amtrak to pay amtrak. I just moved from south Texas to Tennessee and moved my whole house , garage stuff and workshop tools for less than $900. We rented a uhaul, packed it carefully filled to the brim and drove it ourselves. Gas is much cheaper now so spent only $285 on gas and truck was $600. If your not a minimalist and want to move ALL your stuff in one fell swoop then this is the way to go. You have to work hard packing, loading & unloading but it was worth it. Hopefully our last move!

The last time I moved, I purged, sold, gave away 3/4 of my things, purchased a box truck, loaded it, drove it and when I arrived, had the truck as a storage unit and did not have to "move" my things until I found a place. I cant tell you the amount of times people forget this and screw up their new purchase...The Southwest hack; *DON'T* open new cards if you are buying a home with financing!!! This could easily disqualify you *completely* for your new purchase. You could still qualify, but don't chance it...Check with your loan officer *BEFORE* you run your credit. ;-)

And I asked him what do you mean and he said yeah we won't be doing amtrak shipping anymore at all come September 15th!
      I was like what! I literally just made it. Now I understand why I kept feeling in my spirit to leave before August. Because if I would have left later in August I would have been to close to the deadline or they could have easily changed the cutoff date to August or Earlier in September. Thank God I made it!

  • @natthebratster
    @natthebratster 3 года назад +3

    I won't say why I'm an experienced mover it's a lament not a boast. Don't buy expensive wardrobe boxes. Get bulk large contractor bags from Walmart or Home Depot that have the draw string closure not the ties. Turn them upside down and in the middle/center where the seam is cut a U shaped opening. Take your hanger clothes and pull the bag over the top to the hole you cut and bring hanger hooks thru the hole then drawstring close the bottom.
    You can leave them like this in a vehicle for a local move or fold over and use a much less expensive box for a long move.
    Yes the clothes get wrinkled but they will anyway.
    Use all of your (except your best) kitchen dish bath towels older sheets to pack fragile items instead of paying for expensive bubble wrap or packing paper. Yes you'll need to launder the towels but if you use any kind of rental truck or movers everything gets incredibly dusty and dirty anyway.
    Hope this helps some folks.
    Good luck everyone!

Can pack an entire house into their cubes and they’ll drive it for you across the country and store the cubes until you need them delivered.. Looking to move to NC from CA, any suggestions as to good areas to live out there?

    • @tinamarie2121
      @tinamarie2121 3 года назад

      Depends on what lifestyle you are looking for! Are you more of a fast-paced, city person, or a full-on outdoorsy-type? If you like smaller towns so that you can take advantage of BOTH of those lifestyles and have access to a lot of different types of careers in the job market, there are some lovely smaller towns west of Charlotte that will put you very close to the NC mountains, too! Also, we are only around 4 hours or so from the coast of NC, particularly the Wilmington beach area (a little longer if you want to see the gorgeous Outer Banks, but sooo worth it!). And just below Wilmington is the SC border and Myrtle Beach if you want a beach with more night life and Outlet shopping.
      I've lived in NC my whole life. You'd think that someone who has been in a small town would hate where she lives...but no, I love it. It's a gorgeous little town and there's so much to do around here! As with most places, sure I could say "this is wrong & that is wrong", but to be honest we have more good than that. ❣️

    I'm doing this right now. I'm actually selling all my stuff on the market place too and I own a vegan restaurant so I have everyone come into my restaurant to pick up the items. This is overwhelming at times but I believe will be worth it

      Are you going to have a vegan restaurant when you move? If so where at? So hard to find any Vegan Restaurants

    • @artbygilik
      @artbygilik 4 года назад +2

      @@laurierowe617 no I am not going to open a restaurant again :-( too much money and work. It is very hard to find vegan food where I'm already closing so it's a shame for my community but the pandemic hit the business too hard.. I'm gonna play it out and see what life has in store for me next

    How do you ship your things if you aren't sure what your address is? Or, if you are first landing in something temporary (like an extended stay hotel)?

    • @LeisureLizard
      @LeisureLizard 2 года назад

      Amtrak will hold it at the station for you to pick up.
      Or if you use Uhaul pod container things, they will hold at the facility and you can schedule delivery or go get them.

    How did you ship your vehicles?? Since you flew

    • @frugalhealthyvegan1319
      @frugalhealthyvegan1319  5 лет назад +1

      My husband drove our vehicle to California when we moved there. His brother joined him and they did it as a road trip.
      When we lived in CA, we sold our car because it didn't make sense to own one. If I had to do it over again, know I was only going to live there one year, I would have kept the car at my mom's for that year.
      If I needed to move a car, I might see if I could find someone I trusted to drive it for me for a fee.

      According to their site, it has to be cardboard boxes, no bigger than 3 feet wide/deep/tall and no heavier than 50 lbs each.

    Where is a trusted source I can find sublets?

    • @frugalhealthyvegan1319
      @frugalhealthyvegan1319  5 лет назад

      I found my sublet on craigslist and it worked out well. I don't like that site for finding furniture, but I think they're still the best option for finding a sublet, outside of maybe asking on social media.

    Oct 2020 Amtrak suspended its express shipping. I appreciate u , but when u sell or trash all your furniture, u still have to buy new stuff. What it really corresponds to is, the cost of shipping vs the cost of buying new furniture..
