  • Today we're going to be talking about Undertale, and how I believe it will never be enjoyed the same again.
    This is a video essay type project i've been working on for college, where I discuss one of the most interesting parts of undertale to me. And it's impact on the game and community.

    This video is amazing it showed me alot about Undertale that i didn't realize because when i first played it i had already watched playthroughs of the game and it really shows how much work Toby Fox put in and how good it was for its time, also jokes on you im in the deltarune fandom

    Imagine this is the reason deltarune is advertised as only having one ending. Toby just saw how all his hard work and effort he put into undertale's numerous endings gets policed away by the fandom so he just doesn't bother.

      it could be! especially since the snowgrave route was so much more impactful because we were lead to believe it was only 1 ending. Or it could be the sorta ending thats so set in place despite how much the world changes who knows! but i'm definitely enjoying how open ended it is right now :)) it's nice being in the dark about games

      I heard cool concept. Just like in post pacifist ending, there will be a photo, and all eradicated schoolmates will be crossed. I guess the ending will be obviously in light world, where our choices doesn't matter, for pacifist it's simple - everyone will do a cool photo after a good adventures in Dark world, however, in weird route everyone will just be fine with their problems (Berdly would be just sick from Snowgrave, so when he will cure, he'll back) and they will do the same photo, but this time everyone will be upset. 1 Ending still doesn't means 1 result, since I hope neutral ending variants counts as one ending,.although they are entirely different. We'll see...Toby preparing something...something we will wait for DECADES...

      @@DogeCreationsif you think about it, if Deltarune is really going to have just one ending in chapter 7, and you can already kill off some important caratchers, it means that everyone is going to die at the very ending of the game, unless they get magically resurrected from the dead, in order to always have the same identical ending, no matter your choices

    I remember when I was younger, I was so attached to the characters in the game, with their problems and their world feeling fantastically real to me (which is a really strange combo), that I didn't want anything bad to happen to them. I remember getting so mad whenever somebody killed anything in the game. It wasn't until I grew up a little bit that I began to realize that the point of the game IS the power of choice. It's about making good AND bad choices, and playing how you feel YOU should play. I regret the type of fan I was when I was a teenager. That being said, it was a valuable learning experience for me, as it's made me a lot more introspective about certain hyperfixations that I have at other points in my life, and to be more respectful of other people's opinions of and choices in fictional media, regardless of how I may feel about the media in question.
    I totally agree with your main point. Undertale's worldbuilding is baked into the concept of saving and reloading your game. It is up to the players to make the choices they want to make, not the person who recommended the game to them or the people who may be watching them play online. That is the pure Undertale experience.

      it's understandable!! considering how much the game makes you learn that your actions have such a large impact, and makes you feel bad when you do something terrible to the characters. I totally get how so much people were insistent on "playing the game right" to other people. Especially if it's coming right off the hype from your own playthroughs/experience. And yeah, it was a huge learning experience for me as well! despite the hindsight required in order to get there hfjdhgfd

    you're absolutely right about letting people just experience it. i think for myself part of my fear in not pushing people into pacifist is if they arent as taken with the game, and only do one playthrough. theres a huge swathe of story that gets missed then, and its hard to just let that go. especially when its the most impactful and meaningful part of the game for me. and yet all the same you Are right

    I first played undertale when it was still a demo, so literally maybe less than a hundred people played it at this point. One of the most magical and scariest experiences, was playing it like a regular RPG (not knowing that sparing was a thing), killing toriel, feeling EXTREMELY bad about it, and then reloading to spare her.
    ...
    Only for flowey to CALL ME OUT on RELOADING, guilt tripping me for not sparing everyone else.
    THAT is the magic of experiencing undertale blind. It was an RPG that was incredibly innovative and subverted expectations. Playing it blind is the most optimal way to play. Because there are no expectations and the mysteries and subvertions hit HARD.
    Now that undertale is ridiculously popular, it's a lot harder trying to experience that. Because more likely than not, if you even are somewhat in the know with gaming, you will have been spoilt by what kind of game undertale is.
    It's a real shame. Undertale hits the hardest for any person who is used to usual videogame/RPG expectations (killing mobs, etc). So when you play Undertale, it's an instant whiplash. It plays with your expectations, your emotions, it's super good.

    I'm happy that I still did whatever I wanted while playing this game even if the friend who made me play it kept telling me to do this or that while watching me. Undyne not giving up even when her attacks couldn't be any slower or weaker with "Don't give up" playing in the background. That scene really hit me.

    • @DogeCreations
      @DogeCreations  4 месяца назад

      YEAH! That scene when i saw it for the first time was probably one of the most impactful scenes from the game for me. And that's including the main genocide and pacifist endings. It's such a Raw scene for a game that tends to exaggerate or use the fourth wall for it's main gameplay stuff, that it really caught me off gaurd.

      @@DogeCreations yeah the pacifist ending made me cry. When everyone are protecting you from flowey's attacks while he is holding them, and all the monsters came to help you. All the way to the Asriel fight, I cried the whole time 🥲

    I’m honestly kind of worried that the same thing will happen with deltarune for new players once it’s complete. With existence of snowgrave and pacifist, I’m concerned the potential neutral route will be glossed over, as I find it interesting that a certain character breaking his arm if you attack but don’t use snowgrave could suggest the existence of a neutral route.

    • @DogeCreations
      @DogeCreations  4 месяца назад +2

      yeah.. it's definitely a worry for sure. And even excluding that, just playing the chapters when they release going in blind is difficult enough because of how quick everyone is to publish stuff about it.

    i remember when i first played undertale. i was 12 years old in 6th grade and i heard about it from someone who sat at the same lunch table as me. i killed toriel because i didn’t know how else to get past her and when i told him about that he said “noooo” or something.
    i wonder if i could share this game with an older family member. or something. like my grandmother idk.

    I would give anything to magically forget everything about undertale and play it fresh...
    The only suprise I got was coincidentally the same as you : kill Toriel (accident) and reload.
    But I spoiled myself the entire game because I couldn't play it at the time !
    I managed fortunately to play deltarune chap 2 without spoilers and the feeling was like nothing I had done before.
    To play Undertale the same way will just be an unobtainable dream sadly...

    So I never got to experience this game fresh. I wasn't into playing games back then, more so just out of laziness. I would instead watch people play them. And I actually put off watching anyone play it for a while simply because of how it looked. I first watched Jacksepticeye play Undertale and he had already been made aware of the fact that there were Pacifist and Genocide endings and was actively taking pointers from his viewers throughout the playthrough. So my experience was his experience, through and through. I would eventually play it myself, go through Pacifist, then put the game down and move on. At the time, deeming it my favorite game of all time, later bumped down by Spider-Man and Resident Evil 4 remake.
    But recently, I got back into the game. Rewatched some old playthroughs. And then I found PointCrow. Now, he's hugely against backseating anyway. So even though he streamed playing it, he actively didn't listen to chat trying to tell him what to do. He did his own thing. He got a Neutral ending at LV 11. And he showed me something I had never experienced before. A 100% blind experience. And one that required him to think. Not about how best to win a fight, but whether or not he wanted to fight at all. When he heard Undyne talk about the Snowdrake he had killed and saw the Snowdrake's dad at MTT Resort, he learned just how much what he was doing was effecting things. And he went from not giving a shit about their lives to actively trying to decide if killing Asgore was the right thing to do.
    I always say I wanna replay certain games or rewatch certain movies for the first time, but watching PointCrow made me realize something. I never did experience Undertale. Not the way it was meant to be experienced. Watching that playthrough made me realize just how much I missed out on and how much better the game is than even I originally thought. That combined with just how much I'm still learning about the game to this day has bumped it back up to the top of my favorites list.
    I recently introduced the game to my less recently adopted brother and am encouraging him to go in and just do whatever he feels like. I give him no feedback on whether or not what he's doing is right, I just let him go through and do his thing. The only tips I've given is when he died to Toriel, I told him where he missed some healing items that he could go back for, and once he got to Snowdin and started really trying to understand the Act menu, I helped him understand basically how that works. He's on track for a Neutral run and since he doesn't yet know how to spare bosses, I imagine he'll very likely experience Undyne's death scene.

      @Flowermations 4 месяца назад

      Yeah, I don't get why most of the fandom were so hyped about Sans besides his pretty hard Genocide Boss Battle and his epic Megalovania theme when Papyrus also had the same unknown origins as him, Sans doesn't even make that many appearances in the game, he's basically just like a humorous (pun unintended) depressed side character, meanwhile our boi Flowey/Asriel is right there with the whole bag of trauma and emotional issues lol
