    It's immediately apparent this is the seed Doom 64 bloomed from. Same sound effects, similar atmospheric horror soundtrack, similar lighting. Unless something else tried it before, this is probably the start of spooky Doom.

    • @MondySpartan
      @MondySpartan 4 года назад +40

      And they all have its roots in Jaguar Doom. Sadly, the (original) “spooky Doom” era ended in early 2000s; the GameBoy Advance ports were based on the PC counterparts of Doom and Doom II. Doom 3 however would spiritually continue it.

    • @steve_ire321
      @steve_ire321 3 года назад +44

      Doom was always spooky, though, no matter what version you played back around the time it came out. Doom's artwork was largely inspired by whatever music album covers Romero was listening to at the time, and the same goes for the music. The actual premise, though, was always about horror. The game always came across that way to me once you turned the original music off. This version merely just took what was there and improved it, or gave it the appropriate changes.

    My father got me into this in 94. He was 46 at the time and me 14. Did all the Doom franchise at the time in the 90s (Doom, Doom2, Final Doom, Ultimate Doom & Doom for windows). Nothing better than completing and rotating levels with my father and handing over the controls (WASD, Space, CTRL, Alt, Shift and I think the Zero off keypad was shoot). Completed the game and up the difficulty level. Smashed Doom 1 & 2 on ultra Violence with 100% secrets. Didn't like it when i was left at level start with just a pistol and fully out of ammo. Miss those days, forever in my thoughts dad, and still carrying on the gaming legacy.

When I eventually played the original, or versions like Chocolate Doom, they look and play better than the ps1 version but the metal song MIDI soundtrack doesn't fit it at all. Doom was always a horror game, to me. It was god damn terrifying as a 7 year old. And the music is part of that. The ps1 soundtrack fits much much better, and the sound effects of the enemies and guns are all better since they re-did them all for this port, for CD quality instead of shitty MIDI

    🎮 Comment
    From all console ports of Doom this is my favorite since it is unique in many ways. The original soundtrack was replaced with dark ambient tracks made by Aubrey Hodges. (I reeeaally love these tracks)
    Sectors can now be colored which adds a new atmosphere to many maps. There are also a bunch of exclusive maps including a super secret level called Club Doom. Before I knew about this level I used to listen to the music in a CD player and I was puzzled why the hell a gabber track was on the CD.
    Some enemies were cut from this version like the Archvile. On the other hand many enemy types that came with Doom 2 can now also be found in the Ultimate Doom maps.

    I love PSX Doom. Played it a lot in my childhood, it was, in fact, the game that introduced me to the franchise, much like Resident Evil 4 introduced me to the Resident Evil franchise. Just hearing that start up sound makes me tear up, it has been so long since I've heard it.
    The CD I had was the one with Master Levels, TNT and Plutonia. Too bad I lost my original CD back then when I was moving from my previous house, but I just managed to find a mod that turns PC Doom into PSX Doom, with maps ranging from The Ultimate Doom, Doom 2 and Final Doom (Master Levels, TNT Evilution and Plutonia).
    I remember I was too scared to actually play the entire game without cheat codes, not because it was difficult, but because it was terrifying. The change in music and sound effects compared to the PC version really sold that eerie isolation feeling of a survival horror, even if it was meant to be just as fast paced as the PC badass shooter version. Even after 16 years I'm still afraid of playing through the whole thing nonstop. No wonder this is my favorite version of Doom.

    The ambient horror like atmosphere is totally justified in PS doom1 because doomguy is obviously not familiar with the threat that lurks in phobos and deimos bases and he has lost all his colleagues in this invasion. So the atmosphere filled with despair should have been selected by the game designers for the first ever doom game when it released on PC. Then the rock music used in doom1 should have instead been used in doom 64 instead of the horror atmosphere there because by that time doomguy had already become experienced in the art of demon killing so he must be having fun killing them and avenging his bunny.
