- Before forging my sword, I had to do an apprenticeship as a blacksmith, and make a nail. Here witness my training.

I was a guest of The Cut and Thrust Collective - four blacksmiths who have banded together in a forge that was once known as The Forge of Avalon, in Glastonbury. There I spent most of a week, and there I forged my sword - Arnander - the making of which will be the subject of further videos.
I'm quite pleased with the amount of information I got into this video about how forging is done. It shows you several details of how to use a forge to heat metal, and how to hammer shapes into metal.

not too shabby for a first nail! mine was considerably worse when I first started.
But making a sword after this is a bit like saying: 'That garden shed didn't come out too bad, maybe I should start a gothic cathedral.'

I don't understand, is blacksmithing still a viable job or a hobby?
A job yes, but... it's an artisan trade now rather than a working trade. So you have to keep that in mind. You are no longer making things people need, that work is done better and cheaper by machines, you are doing things that people want, which means marketing yourself and approaching your work like anyone else in a niche luxury market, like a painter, carpenter, tailer, etc. You'll be making stuff for dedicated fans, like Lindey, or people with too much money and not enough sense.

It's pretty normal for firs time metal workers to NOT want to hit the metal too hard (fear of doing something so severe you can't fix it). It's just a mental thing you grow out of pretty quickly. I do a fair amount of Bronze work, with some iron and steel working thrown in. Also, I'm seeing a lot of comments about "tapping the anvil with the hammer to make it bounce back up," and that is absolutely not what you tap the anvil for. If you see a smith (of any type) hitting a piece and then hitting the anvil deliberately before going back to their work it's to keep up their hammering cadence. People hit in patterns and with a rhythm, and if you have to move your piece a lot while hammering it, you don't want to disrupt what your pattern is.
My son is a blacksmith, and when he is teaching (me or others) he uses small strikes of the hammer on the anvil to signal the student when to strike the metal.

It always amazes me how hard blacksmiths can hit with that hammer while making it look effortless.
Sucking at something is the first step towards becoming sorta good at something.

You can understand why people burnt down old buildings to scavenge the old nails for building their next house or barn.
The expense of nails was a big reason why houses were often without them. If you look at a log cabin or house, you'll have a hard time finding the nails.
Why a nail? Everybody knows that you need to forge daggers to level up your blacksmithing...

Yes. It most places they have you forge a coat hook so you can hang your coat on the wall.

A tip I have found incredibly helpful when using a hammer whenever is to swing with your shoulder. Larger muscles mean harder strikes, means less work. I picked this up from my blacksmithing mentor who practices entirely historical methods of blacksmithing, who is sixty something with almost all health defects you can think of and can hit harder than anyone else I know.

Weird to see a friend appear in a Lindybeige video.
When we where renovating the roof ages ago i had the "luck" to steep on a nail like that. The Nail was around 100 years as old as the house was maybe older still extremely sharp and got through my shoe easily. Gave me tetanus of course, thankfully i got to a doctor soon enough so it wasnt a big deal but i still remember it. And it wasn't nearly as neatly formed as yours. It felt like the smith had tried to make half of a dagger with it.
This is easily the best video I have seen of a youtuber visiting a smith and trying their hand at blacksmithing. You are always very interesting and always read up on the subject, so good to see someone care so much about quality content.
As a blacksmith and fan of your channel, I just about watched the ultimate Lindy Beige video 😉

Keep on smashing hot metal please. I'd love to see your in depth analysis on the things I work with daily. It's been so fun diving into history with you. Now we have arrived here; the preservation of a historical craft. Funny how this has survived the industrial revolution. Real handwork can not be replaced by machines.

About time you did a video series on forging and the middle ages.
You can see why iron and in relation blacksmiths were looked on as having magical powers in the past. It is so different from using stone and wood.. well done lloyd you'll have forearms like brisket in no time.

I'm a beginner blacksmith, with no other smith to guide me. The possibilities are endless and forges are easy to make. I fancy myself in ornamental ironwork. It gladens me that you are taken the initiative to do what fascinates you, forge on brother.

Lloyd is such a good apprentice. He repeats the explanation to make sure he got the information right. And then just goes for it!
Now I know how to make a nail - excellent!! But, if it's not too much trouble, could you now make videos on how to make a hammer, a forge, and possibly all that other business you were using? That'd be great, thanks!

This is why I hate watching "forging scenes" in movies, especially if it's just one person making the "legendary sword" complete with polishing, fittings, scabbard, and ornamentation.
A couple of years of ago I took a 3 day course on knifemaking and over the course of the three days, all of us taking the course we each were able to make 2 successfully completed knives with simple handles.
What most people don't realize is that with forging and crafting a lot of items, it wasn't just one person, but a a fairly large number. In the case of a sword and this goes for Eastern swords such as the katana as well, it could be worked on by over 20+ people. A smith would work the metal and do most of the forging and then apprentices would do some of the grinding and polishing. Besides that other work had to be done by completely different craftsmen. Another team or group would work on the scabbard, and then you needed even more people if you wanted it to be a fancier sword with ornamentation, engravings, inlays, and other fancy things. All told you can have 20 to 30 people working over the course of several months to make a high quality sword.

I'm not sure how long I've been subscribed, it must be years. Lindybeige's content has been wonderful, each and every upload. It's always interesting, and I always learn something new, but Lindybeige has something the vast majority of people seem to lack. It's a spark of enthusiasm and genuine joy for what he does. The way he speaks and communicates, down to body language, seems so warm and friendly, humble and honest.
I hope he knows he has fans that love him. I want him to know, some of that positive "energy" (for lack of a better word) rubs off on his viewers. I was feeling pretty down about a lot of things before watching this video and I realized that Lindybeige is a go-to when I'm feeling bad.
Lindybeige, Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a genuinely good person and sharing it with us. You are very valuable to a great many people and we are happy to have you in our lives in some small way.

Also better than the first time I forged anything. I did my heating in a yard fire and wound up with a big ol' crack because I couldn't get a good forging temperature. You are blessed to have access to a proper forge and a skilled teacher.
nice work! I remember doing that in my year 10 highschool, it's not as straight forward as one might think. I know it really builds you upper body working iron and steel. metal working in general is fun to learn. using a lathe, mill, and the various cutting and welding methods is a fascinating field, and in practice it's seems as much a skill as an art. you might be interested in learning to work with bronze also, as it is such an important material in world history.

My first blacksmiths project was a set of horse shoeing nails, for a farrier. Then a horseshoe... Hopeless. Great fun.

Watching Lindybeige process the praise and compliment he received for his nail is very amusing to me. How very English of him XD
It's amazing how classic blacksmiths (even modern ones) have obvious "blacksmith arms" with one being thicker and more muscly than the other.
As a carpenter I get that way to an extent. Given that I am right side dominant my right arm/shoulder tend to be more defined. This is not to say that my left arm gets neglected, for some odd reason I can hold and carry heavier objects for longer with my left hand/arm.

Yes, but I will admit it is not pretty. I really don't have the hand-eye coordination nor muscle memory for the left side.... yet.
I have always been fascinated by smithing, the tools and techniques and the things a good smith can create.

i am a recreational blacksmith since i was 15 (im 18 when writing the comment) and i was impressed with how much you lured on your first day. cant wait to see you continue luning such a amazing skill.
After a couple of sessions, you will turn into Lindy "greyish and stinking sulfur". Dedicated clothes are a must have for blacksmithing.
All my kit was filthy when I got home. My camera smelled of forge for ages.
Yup, I keep my forge outfit sealed in a plastic bag and wear it once a week. The stop to the grocery store is always embarassing smellwise.

I got a weekend training session a few years back for my birthday, and am doing another in Feb. :D
I got my training quite cheaply from the local agricultural college (you can sometimes get subsidies as well).
Cannot recommend enough.
