  • What's a trail name? How do you get one? What are some examples? What if you don't like your trail name? What's my trail name?
    As a 2016 PCT thru-hiker I answer these questions.

Trail names are simpler than first names. Too many similar first names to talk with other hikers, trail angels and city merchants. It's easier asking or telling stories about the unique trail name than it is to use someone's first name; e.g. "Tom". Just how many Tom's might be on the trail? - "Saltick" PCT 2005

After driving through the night and slamming coffee and monsters we started. I puked (ralphed) my guts up.

They called me Dirty Tomato, Ol' DT for ruining a dinner on a two week trip back in 2011. First rule I learned-- NEVER drop the food. Dirt isn't good for the diet, but lo and behold..... ;)

The leg going into Hot Spring NC. First time on the AT. Got through the first climb, earned the name Ralph (you can guess why)

Trail names happen organically. Your friends WILL name you. Anyone that tries to name themselves is just pathetically lame.

Either start walking a lot slower or a lot faster so you start bumping in to entirely new people.

Nope, other people don't get to pick your trail name for you, you get to pick your own trail name. It can deff be inspired by things that happen, but you always know the person picks the trial name you don't just start calling people names that is not nice.

It could definitely be uncomfortable if people start calling you by a trail name you don’t like. And I’m sure people do pick their own. But in my experience it’s more often given to someone by other hikers, at least that was the case when I hiked the PCT in 2016.

I guess if hiking is new to you, you take a special name, wear a special hat, and be hiking cool in general. Having hiked a number of trails on several continents over several decades, I still go by what my parents called me when I was born. But then, I don't do hikes where you stay every 3rd night in a hostel, or where you are passing people every hour, or where the whole trail smells like burning weed, either.

tom jackson personally im not big on the trail names. if a nick name comes up organically so be it. but many hikers rely on them to differentiate all the emilys and mikes hiking a trail in one summer.
