    I am reminded again of my time in culinary training, a chef once told me "You can always add more, but you can never take any away." In reference to adding flavour to a soup, but I think it applies equally to miniature painting. Thin layers, patience, and a plan are all key if you really want to make something special. Sounds sort of obvious, but it's worth saying.
    Loved this one fellas, I'm in the middle of painting a kitbashed Nurgle Knight Abominant which is fused to a tank, and particularly the discussion on contrast paints and washes really made me rethink my next steps.
    I look forward to every episode. Thanks for sharing!

    Social media has never been part of my hobby or hobbying. The closest I get is looking at painting videos and the odd painting challenge someone puts up.

      I enjoy watching RUclips or twitch hobby while hobbbying, and I enjoy talking to other hobbyists on discord. But I absolutely think social media can push you to set incorrect expectations and comparisons.

    So with the discussion on washes, I actually use Coelia Greenshade as a glaze wash. I think it down 1:1 with medium, then use it as a wash on my Space Marines chapter to slightly alter their base colour

    Model tunnel-vision is definitely a thing. If I've been hyper-focused on a mini for hours, I find that I spot my mistakes after I step away for half an hour or so and come back with fresh eyes

      I’ve started keeping a notebook and writing down what I need to do to my models in the second half. So if I’m towards the end of a Space Marine, im noting: face, gun casing highlights, highlight gold trim, clean up hands, etc…. Whatever I see I write and generally that list keeps me focused and I add to that list as I find new things on the model to touch up towards the end.

      @@TangoNoob I should probably do that tbh I always end up with some random unpainted bit BC I didn't paint it when I had the paint I was intending to use on the palette

    90% of those issues with washes can be solved by using oils. Also painting light to dark is a core concept. Applies to weathering as well.
    Can easily go darker

    Highlighting black: I really like adding blue to the highlights and green/purple to the shading or edges facing down. Gives it a good feel of reflecting the sky/ground.

    Tamiya extra thin (or Mr Hobby extra thin) are awesome as plastic glue. They can also be used to make sprue goo, by melting sprues in them. This again is a great way to fill gaps.

    • @gibondeluxe
      @gibondeluxe Месяц назад

      The extra thin is also excellent for pushing the sprue goo into the right places, and smoothing the squeeze out. Also, great for final mould line clean up, after scraping with a knife.

    The way I see it any colour acrylic, enamel,oil paint can be made into a wash, that's how I started again, already had various acrylic paint from building airfix but a lot of them were gloss so I bought a primary colour set of Vallejo model air to get me started with miniature painting again and also teach me how to use an airbrush

    Tip for getting rid of dust from minis: use those Blowers used by photographer for blowing off lint from lenses. Might not dust off everything but is the least abrasive method.

    A bit off topic, but I need to thank you. A couple of episodes ago Joe mentioned turning someone on to Hatebreed and you all concurred that it was a noble cause. Hearing that I thought that I might be turned on to them as well. I checked them out ... liked them ... a lot and today I experienced them live for the first time and what an experience it was. So thank you! All of you, for that service :).

    I mean, the speed thing is true, but keeps coming back to your objective. So whilst sympathetic to George, there are people that want to put nice models on the table, and play a game, rather than getting perfect models out, for the joy of painting in itself.
    One of the things that came up here earlier was you can always go back to a model. So doing neat, sharp, clean makes sense to me, and then coming back and refining depending on what your looking to do with the model.

    I replaced my Easter Cup water holder with a jam jar. After each painting project, I clean my paint pallet (Dry) when starting a new project I undercoat the pallet the same colour as them mini.

    Learning to paint without needing to wash, or rather having washes applied in specific use cases, was one of the most important and difficult bits to learn (with still room for improvement).

    • @sinisterplank3113
      @sinisterplank3113 Месяц назад +1

      @Gorbachoph I think you'd get done faster by going lighter on washes as the guys talk about. Cleaning up after a wash takes a lot of time. Tabletop models where you do a midtone basecoat through a can, block out detail, and use thinned contrast paints and a sharp brush to only flood the deepest recesses and cracks.

    Something Tommie Soule has in his "art of" book is this idea of using as few high quality brush strokes as possible, and I think that really helps with not overworking the paint

    • @DaronSchmit
      @DaronSchmit Месяц назад

      Another Tommie Soule-ism is to "prep" the paint by kind of wet blending a bit of water into the paint and taking paint from the ideal dilution for the work you're doing

    I find I destroy my brushes under size 1 and they lose their tip after 1-2 uses, but for some reason my size 2 lasts for ages... am I doing something wrong with brush care?

    • @Gorbachoph
      @Gorbachoph Месяц назад +1

      The small brushes should be used for layering ONLY. You should only be doing controlled strokes using the belly of the brush. Even base coating a mini with a small brush can destroy the tip. You will inevitably need to "poke" the brush into small areas during a base coat.

    do you find as well known professional painter that also has (or is part of) a professional painting company, your doubling down on pressure with regards to social media, and that your having to keep up with everyone else or there's the fear of being lost because you haven't posted for a day, especially when another brand posts something really good, kind of your own worst enemy, there's not only the validation but also the pressure of achieving that like count... its a mental health minefield

      personally i do a lot research/browsing and either try to work out how they've done a technique, or I'll watch a you tube vid and cherry pick something i like and try it on future project, but I'll admit i rarely experiment outside of the paints i have because its an accumulative cost issue, and i often worry about wasting money, but i will say i do try a base of rhinox, but then they'll be like a tree of possibly from the other colours i own, whether it be a brown, cream or red tone, but then it will also depend on what I'm painting because a holster on a fist, may not work on another chapter base colour scheme
