I read that this existed but have only just found it. Wonderful and made so
visually too with Carlos Kleiber seen to be conducting. I love Der Rosenkavalier,
and the Wiener Philharmoniker but to see the superb Carlos K is the icing on
the cake! Thank you so much for uploading.

At 21'35" the Signature of the Vienna Philharmonic on this Opera. This is done by them ONLY and Kleiber is happy about the result. Actually there is also another little point in the great final scene when Ochs is leaving, the third trombone plays an old Austrian tune in counterpoint, almost unudible but very funny. These are the everlasting marks the Wiener left on their favourite opera. But the UUUUUUUUUHHHHMMMMMMMM under Annina's cadenza is the most famous of them all.

Was it not written in the score? What was the difference with anywhere else?

I don't think it was released because of the mishaps that happened by the end of Act 2, with Kleiber's famous "suicide" gesture

Vienna orchestra is the best for this specific opera, they are actual masters of the waltz and this piece has a lot of that style. Those orchestral rubatos are incredible (one of the hardests thing to achieve with any orchestra).

A superb production on all levels: the cast was visual and vocal perfection, excepting Ochs, who might have been a bit more of the lecherous buffoon he was. Octavian was handsome as a boy, and pretty as a woman, and the Marschallin regal. It never does this opera any service to try to take it out of its proper period, and make it contemporary. The stage set here was excellent. Kleiber's conducting is that of an absolute master, perfect in every detail. The only sad note: for me, at least, the sound was unfortunately badly transferred. I could not hear the voices on stage, and many of the orchestral witticisms seem to have been lost in the orchestra pit.

Sadly, this recording is out of sync visually and acoustically. Whoever has decided this, has chosen to synchronize the conductor's motions with the sound, but not the players (watch eg. the violin bows). So this recording provides a WRONG impression for students of conducting.
In fact, in reality, Kleiber with his conducting gestures is much more ahead the sound, and this would be, what students of conducting would have to learn, but cannot by watching that video here.
