I worked in auto repair. Whenever I hear something about refrigeration and Japanese products, I think of the 1985 and 1986 Nissan Maxima and the 1997-2001 Honda CRV, two cars prone to having the A/C compressor fail and then destroy the condenser with junk from the failed compressor.
Another common problem in cars is that the Schrader valve where the A/C hose meets can fail and leak refrigerant in seconds. If you are lucky, you can thread a new Schrader valve on the existing components. If you are not, you might have to buy a new refrigerant hose which can cost anywhere between $150 and $350 depending on which car it is in.
In auto repair, there is typically one machine for A/C which is about the size of a rolling tool cart. It has a vacuum pump, refrigerant reservoir, computer, and scale all in one unit. These repair shops often don't maintain these machines properly and that often means refrigerant blowing out of a failed gasket and means you might lose the repair job to another repair shop. Those shops typically don't maintain other equipment and hundreds of automotive lifts are death traps.
However, learning to repair automotive air conditioners doesn't require much time to learn and the jobs aren't difficult to do. I live in Florida, and the demand for A/C guys exceeds the supply. I know the situation is similar in other hot parts of the USA, because I have many family members who live in Texas and pay a high price for automotive A/C repairs.

This is the best how to video on changing the gaskets and so important. Being in maintenance I don't do AC everyday so it's easy to forget the little things.

In a pinch, flip gasket over to get you through till you can replace them. If you can pull it without breaking it that is.

Good idea to buy new test/charge hoses every year because they can leak. If you’re using test/charge hoses for vacuum and you can’t pull a decent deep vacuum or it keeps breaking on you, then the hoses themselves are one possible reason for this. Better to use a vacuum manifold and the heavier black rubber vacuum hoses instead. Even then you may have to change the o-rings in the fittings from time to time.

    Question:
Is it possible to use flexible rubber hoses in a mini split system instead of copper hoses? I want to build a portable mini split air conditioner that can be used to cool any room. The system would have the compressor sitting outside and the indoor wall unit mounted on a portable stand. The hoses from the compressor to the wall unit would have to be flexible rubber instead of copper pipe and be about 20 feet long. The compressor itself will have a receptacle for electricity to be plugged in to power the system. The idea is to make the system portable and to be able to use it in any room.
What I am not sure of is whether the flexible rubber refrigerant hoses will hold the charge for an indefinite time without the refrigerant leaking out.

  • @toddbishop7052

Did you ever figure out why you needed to use a 5/16 gasket on another hose? Was it maybe from memory on another hose you could not locate at the time for the video? I would like to know because it would help me in considering non-standardized gaskets being a possibility. Like, it will always be 1/4 gasket for model/maker this, this, and that..., and 5/16 for that, this, and that etc.

Thanks for the videos! You made reference to Japanese brands being inferior but I'll bet you meant to say Chinese. Back when I was a kid (60's-70's) Japanese products had a bad reputation. Today in general they are up there with the best. Though Chinese products in general are cheap and unreliable there is a small but growing segment of Chinese manufacturers that are producing some of the highest quality products available. Unfortunately a lot of high quality American made products are mostly assembled from high quality Chinese parts or raw materials.
