This song was for the retuning Vietnam Veterans who came back with terrible PTSD...all the madness, anger, horror, insomnia, guilt, are all captured in the progression changes. Tempo. Then listen to the lyrics....it changes everything you think you understand about the song. "Lay your weary head to rest. Don't you cry no more."

Trivia: I grew up in Topeka, Kansas. The rock group Kansas used to play at some of our dances/proms at Topeka West High School. Phil Ehart, the drummer, and I had the same girl friend in high school. Used to go over to Rich Williams' house and hang out in high school Rich is the lead guitarist. Both are very talented musicians and their success enabled them to live a nice life in Atlanta. Kerry Livgren is the only member who still makes his home in the Topeka area (Shawnee County). I was lucky enough to leave Kansas by being accepted at the University of Southern California film school in LA and I'm still producing and directing movies, but I haven' seen Rich since high school. I did run into Phil by happenstance while we were both vacationing on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina in the mid 80's. Their songs are timeless and happy that you appreciate them on behalf of your generation.

This is the studio album version synched (poorly) to playing footage. Keyboardist John Elefante is shown wailing on the congas but you don't hear that whatsoever on the recording. Same for the tambourine. He was also given no credits for any percussion work on the album, only drummer Phil Ehart was. Great, great song with an inspiratioal message none the less. Kansas was an awesome band. I was 18 when Leftoverture was released in 76 and have heard this song hundreds of time since. Still loving it as much as the first time I listened it. Excellent to see young bloods today rediscovering the musical treasures we were so fortunate to enjoy back in the day. Keep on rockin y'all

Speaking of all of the different instruments this band brings, the vocalist with the tamborine was a classically-trained violinist. This is one of the few songs they recorded where his violin isn't included in the mix. Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks Colorado(God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way with roughly $1 a gallon for gas on bikes. Hell yeah.😎😎
I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it.
    I still have this LP./Album.
"Point of Know Return" and "Dust in the Wind" are two other awesome songs from that era 45 years ago.
They're still played on classic rock radio.
    "Surely Heaven waits for you"😇😇😇😇😇😇😇

Uh oh; be careful with this Kansas thing; if you go down this rabbit hole you may never come back; Kansas, YES, Genesis ... Prog Rock can become an obsession ... take it from an old fart.

per geography and Rock bands mainstream, we had Boston, Kansas (Carry on was their best song - they had a few other good ones too- (as did Boston), and America - which IMO was the best Geographic Band. America has more excellent songs than the others (oh I forgot the other geograghic band - Chicago).................all of then had classics, but jsut in IMO - American overall were more consistent offering excellence.
all 70's era - all offered their best early on (so early 70's) - have you checked out "America"???????????? you should, they were excellent - like Supertramp (in the early days) - sadly both turned pop and lost what they had to offer prior.
so per both Supertramp and America (do you know about America????????? - if not you should!!!!!!! they were a piller of "Rock" in the early 70's) they fell to pop and lost their spark, but we still have their earlier spark/talent on CD/etc to enjoy.
.........."America" is famous for their Sister Golden Hair, Dont cross the River, A horse with no Name, Ventura Highway (and more - basically 7-9 big hits on the radio in the early 70's - like Supertramp) - my personal fav is Donkey Jaw - which was not a big hit on the radio, but like Supertramp, America's "B-sides" (lesser know - no hits - on the same albums, were excellent even if never made it on the "radio" - IMO/2-cents).
ya. check out America.........................and if you like them, you will like the equally "big" (early - 1970s), Crosby Steels and Nash (and sometime Young(Neil Young)) - CSN@Y are up with the top of the tops of late 60's early 70 rock!!!!!!!!! check out their "So Far" album.
    2-cents.

This song is actually declaring the religion of self. But using some type of biblical referencing. Good tune but Lucifer was the worship leader of heaven.
