    He’s undoubtably in the wrong here. He crossed boundaries and probably scared tf out of Betsy. Yet i still emphasize with Travis, his brain is so scrambled by what happened in his past that he genuinely believes he did nothing wrong, he’s so deluded and detached from reality that he can’t comprehend how he could possibly be wrong. Mental health is a bitch, take care of yourselves and your loved ones, it’s only gotten worse since then.

      This is exactly it, *Joker* was a modern spin of this movie with its main character struggling with society, rejection, fitting in, frustrations, denial, etc.
      Take the name, the title of the city, the name of his accused father and a few minor aspects away and it's got no claim to being part of the Batman universe BUT did do well as a Taxi Driver type movie with its star putting in a blinding performance.

    Fascinating insights about Travis' psychosis - he isn't able to see and empathize with what matters to other people and relate from their point of view, and then becomes angry when he doesn't get what he wants. These are hallmarks of psychosis.

She was trying to be nice about it. She even took his first call. But he kept pushing and pushing expecting a different response. And eventually be shows up to her workplace in a threatening manner to yell at her but SHE'S in the wrong?? I love this movie and i love Travis but his actions here aren't justified.

    • @xtntxex
      @xtntxex Год назад +56

      It just goes to show you why many of these guys making these comments can’t ever get more then one date from a woman (assuming they get that chance at all). Even when I watched this film as a teenager I knew better then to take a nice girl out to a porno on a first date and this film certainly didn’t make me think that was okay. It just boggles my mind that there are a lot of young men who think that Betsy is in the wrong and Travis is completely justified. I think they miss the point that Travis isn’t a hero or even an anti-hero. He’s a deeply disturbed individual who wants to think he’s the hero.
      I love these type of films with deeply flawed protagonists but hate the fact that often times some people will take identifying with these characters a little too far.

      What if Travis was a gentleman before Vietnam but it didn't work out and he got rejected... so what does any man do when he gets his heart broken; they go to war... then after the Vietnam War he tried to pick up where he left off but the conflict left him more damage than before and he couldn't follow the normal social cues so any activity that he thought was acceptable was wrong. It's not his fault in my opinion.

Sure, he was different, but that was the novelty of his social ineptitude and gaucheness, but the date made her realise that that was who he was, not some charming quirk. I love how the arc of this subplot is that Travis realizes that the Betsy he's madly in love with is an idolized creation he's made to satisfy both his ego and his loneliness. She's not all perfect and all loving in the real world. She's not his creation, she's a human being who he disrespected. Dealing with the fact he's not in control of her like he is in his fantasies devastates him. Travis is NOT a 'good person', nor is he misunderstood. He's a creepy guy. His potential for salvation comes from the fact that deep down, he has a human heart, unlike Sport or 'The Ol' Bastard'. Travis hurt 'the right people' in the eye of the city. Even Betsy contemplated giving him another chance in light of his vigilante glory. What no-one ever finds out is that Travis just wanted to hurt 'someone', regardless of who they were by this point and found a moral loophole to do so. If anything, the horror of the movie is that Travis slipped through the cracks to the point the upstate beauty queen he took to a porno theater was second guessing herself.
