  • In the first build video of this series, we begin the construction of what will be a 1950's style classic mahogany wood runabout. We start with a building form and construct the frames using paper plans obtained by Glen L Marine.
    Over the past year, this wood power boat build project has stretched our limits on woodworking skills, but we are so excited to have taken on this project and are learning so much. My Son and his interest in woodworking was enough for me to finally justify taking on this massive project.
    Be sure to subscribe, so that you can follow along on this project as we add regular videos detailing the process of building the boat.

    Well out of all the boat builders you got one of the nicest cats. That's gonna be a great boat too.

      He is a great cat, he just showed up at the house as a kitten and was skinny and covered in fleas! I think he appreciates having a home! Thanks for watching our build!

    My new favorite RUclips channel, I really love the memories you are building with your kids, they will cherish this boat even long after you.
    Thank you for sharing your life and skills.

      We can't wait to see it finished but I also have to remember to enjoy the process and the memories we are creating. Thanks so much for your comment, for watching and for that reminder!

    Wow, my dad and I bult a Glen-L 17 sailboat in our garage when I was a teen in the 1970's. This brings back memories. You'll have a lot of fun in years to come.

      That's great to hear! It's a lot of work but still fun and hope to see the payoff when we can take off through the water (and hopefully not sink!)

    This bring back some good memories. I did a Glen-L Outrage 5 yrs ago. A 16’ runabout. So far, everything is identical. Sadly, I did mine by myself. It was a retirement project. I wish both my dad and father-in-law could have been here to help. Can’t wait to see the next video.

      Congrats on your build, it's a huge and sometimes overwhelming project without a doubt. I had planned on waiting until retirement but when my Son said he wanted to do it as well, it kicked it into high gear! Now we feel the pressure of trying to get it done by the next boating season! But so much fun!

      @@fultonfinewoodworksI wish I could send pics. The Outrage was not a deep boat. You actually sat almost on the floor. It was definitely a fun build.

    I've always wanted to build a wooden boat. My family had a few when I was a kid. So glad you and Sedge were talking about it on the Pod as I missed the release so excited to see how it all turns out. Hopefully the snow will be gone soon and you'll get her finished up for the summer.

      I have as long as I remember as well, also a plane but not sure that one will happen because I don't know how to fly it... Thanks so much for watching and we also hope to get it ready by summer, we are currently killing it with progress. The hard freeze, snow and ice shutdowns have been good for us! Glad we had the materials on hand!

    I bought the same boat plans this past October. Been kinda sitting on my hands thinking about the commitment it’s going to take. Your videos came across my feed at the right time.

      When you break it down into small tasks, it's not too overwhelming. Also I feel like we make more progress on it when we work on it for short sessions almost daily vs. one day a weekend! Hope the videos help we plan on publishing episode 4 this weekend and continuing the series until it is completed

    A boat builder can never have enough clamps. Even getting some from friends and neighbors! Ohh, and estimating how long things will take,, double it! And,,,, when you think 80% done you still have 50% more to do!!

    Hi, sir I was amazed watching your video with your kind assistant son the whole clip and now I'm inspired to build a wooden boat. Can I ask a favor a blueprint of a boat frame if you don't mind and I appreciate for that. Thank you

    • @fultonfinewoodworks
      @fultonfinewoodworks  12 дней назад

      Hi thanks for watching the blueprints for the boat are available on the Glen L website under the model Malahini

    Whether it starts on the lofting floor, or with paper patterns, a high level of measuring accuracy is required in the beginning. As the project progresses, you'll discover that a given measurement becomes less important, and that the part needs to fit the boat, becomes paramount.
    Have fun!

    • @fultonfinewoodworks
      @fultonfinewoodworks  23 дня назад

      Totally agree, my favorite thing about getting the boat flipped is I feel like we no longer need to refer to measurements on the plans. It's our own boat now and the dimension and details can be what they are and what we want. Thanks!

    Great videos, I am also doing a Malahini build, but not as far along as you guys. Your videos are a lot of help. One question, do I see your Chine block upside down around 19:00 ? Maybe I have mine inverted ?

    • @fultonfinewoodworks
      @fultonfinewoodworks  22 дня назад +1

      Yes it was I completely forgot about it we had to saw the epoxy off with a multi tool and knock it off with a hammer to reverse it! That is a confusing part for sure! Good luck with your build!

    Boat building is 1/4 carpentry, 1/4 cabinet making, and 1/2 sculpture.

    I notice that you have the interior transom board installed prior to finishing the frame or flipping the boat. How did you support the transom at this point ? I have to think the support at the back of the building jig was probably only engaged to the transom frame by 1/4” or so ? I was planning to install the interior transom board after flipping the boat, but of course, I would like to have my final mahogany layer on outside of transom and fibreglassed before flipping. A bit of an issue, as I don’t want the carriage bolts etc visible on the outer layer of the transom. Any suggestions ?

    • @fultonfinewoodworks
      @fultonfinewoodworks  7 дней назад +1

      I have two 3/4 layers for my transom, the first was placed on the form and then chine and shear die into it, the ply layer goes over and was flush trimmed with the back. I then through bolted to he transom knee and then added a second layer and flushed it to the sides so the bolts are hidden. The advantage of doing this before the flip is you can fair it out with the bottom and sides and keep the right angles. You will see on the flip episode first thing I did was trim up excess on the top of transom because it was easier to get to after the flip.
