      @@Travelwelders I just replaced the whole unit. Scrap yard wanted 700 for a used one and i got one from AutoZone for 750 refurbished with exchange. Took an hour top to install. Had to have realigned and the sensor zeroed but works perfect. Thanks anyway for reply back

      Just found out there is a recall on them, so if it happens again make a claim and get a free one and a rental while you wait

    There is a specific direction for that bearings to go in the housing i just figured that out

  • @Mulchavelli
    @Mulchavelli 5 месяцев назад +1

    Are the ball bearings on the left side or on the right side of the rack and pinion? Because I can take one or the other off and replace the belt, but I don’t wanna take the wrong side off.

    • @Travelwelders
      @Travelwelders  5 месяцев назад

      You have to take the larger side of that housing off and pull the little pulley or whatever out of the housing in order to fish the new belt on there. It was kinda a pain but you’ll get it

    You're right, I have looked for the past two weeks for videos relating to 2018 silverado rack n pinion, and this is the only one i have come across, but I just need to replace the bushings in my and trying to find out if I can do that while it is on the vehicle or not??

  • @mark9696

    Hey brother, how can i get more info on the recall? A website or something if you have one, please. Mine may be more than just the bushings.

      I just googled the phone number for recalls concerning Chevrolets and called the number. I actually found out from dales junk yard, a local junk yard I was trying to buy the rack n pinion from, he looked it up for me and confirmed there is indeed a recall on my truck for the rack n pinion etc.. I called them and got a claim number, they were talking to long to go through with it and I needed my truck back like today, so I bought one from auto zone it was a remanufacture and I installed it and then went and got an alignment from the local Mavis tire company in town and has them reset the steering angle sensor 👌🏼

      The dealership will say it’s the whole rack and pinion that’s bad, that’s their way of going around the recall.

    How did you keep the bearings from falling out

    • @Travelwelders
      @Travelwelders  7 месяцев назад +1

      I didn’t, they fell out, I cleaned them with brake cleaner, regreased them and then reinstalled. However if you have a 2014 to 2018 I just found out there recalling them. So make a claim brother, it’s bs we have to deal with this with a brand new truck anyhow

      Where can i get info at about the recall? @@Travelwelders

  • @TouchMe82

    I'm just starting this but I think my motor bearings are bad also maybe the reason my belt tore. The motor shaft isn't 100% smooth when turning by hand

      Yessir 👌🏼

    • @TouchMe82
      @TouchMe82 Месяц назад

      @Travelwelders so I got it put together i found that putting the bearing housing on the shaft and having some threads exposed and pouring the bearing bbs in and turning it back and forth work them down pretty easy

      Unfortunately i accidentally broke one of the motor mounting bolts off and now I gotta get that tiny thing out

  • @ForsakenXennial
    @ForsakenXennial 7 месяцев назад

    Thanks! I pulled my motor and the belt was broken. I had hoped there was a way to replace it without removing the rack. But if i have to remove the rack it i might as well replace the whole thing.
    Did you need to recalibrate the steering angle sensor? Does your steering return to center without the need for calibration?

    • @Travelwelders
      @Travelwelders  7 месяцев назад +2

      Yes Sir, unfortunately I learned the hard way. After I took the entire rack and pinion apart and replace the belt etc, it was a nightmare. I put everything back together and got it working again with only replacing the belt. However it crackled and popped and screeched and it went out again 2 days into driving it. 🤦‍♂️ so I bought a remanufactured rack and pinion from auto one for 950 dollars. I sent in the core which kept me from paying an additional 400 dollars. I made the mistake of not taking my toe rod ends off the old unit also so I had to buy 2 new ones for another 150 dollars. Put it all in and it works great now. I have to take it to the dealer still to get the steering angle sensor calibrated this Friday. They want you to have to bring things to them now so you can’t fix your own vehicle. It’s a crying shame brother. Hope this helped

      @@Travelwelders Sorry to hear it. If it's any consolation you just saved me time and money. Without your video I would have done the same as you.

      Ditto mines in the air now with the same issue but because of what I now know with the work you have done mine is a slipping belt with my big 37s it’s trying to turn . A new rack it is 😅 dang really wanted a miracle fix . Lmk how much they charged to reprogram it

    • @ForsakenXennial
      @ForsakenXennial 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@PensacolaHvac Paid the dealer 150 for alignment and calibration.
      I drove to the dealer after replacing the rack myself without issue, no codes, no warning.
      I learned that these electric power assist racks will damage when the steering wheel is fully turned, to either side, for longer than 15 seconds.
      Something to keep in mind.

      @@Travelwelders what brand rack did you get from AutoZone? I've been trying to locate a new or reman unit, whether GM or ACDelco, but that's proving to be difficult to say the least. Conflicting info from parts vendors, dealer saying both new and reman are backordered with no ETA, etc. May have to go aftermarket reman at this point. Thanks
