Touring Budapest + Sailing Away on AmaMagna!!

  • The AmaMagna is docked right in the middle of Budapest and I can see the Citadel from our balcony! In the morning we are touring the Buda side of the city. The bus is waiting outside for us to take the short drive over to Castle Hill. From here we follow our guide on a walking tour through Dózsa György Square and through the city’s Castle District. We are invited to marvel at the fairytale turrets of Fisherman’s Bastion, gazing upon the breathtaking panorama of Budapest below. This has been voted one of the top ten views in all of Europe! Next to the Bastion is the Medieval Matthias Church, which has been standing atop Castle Hill since the 11th century where it was once used as the Coronation site for Hungarian kings. The church is renowned for its striking tower and colorful mosaic roof. In our free time after the tour, I found a local grocery store and bought some local Hungarian snacks… like paprika chips!
    Lunch at Central Market Hall
Just a short 9 minute walk from the ship, we went to the Central Market Hall for lunch. I LOVE local city markets and visit them every chance I get! And this was one of the best I have ever seen! This massive building was established in 1897. The bottom floor is filled with local vendors selling spices like paprika, meats, fruits, vegetables and so much more!! And the top floor is filled with street food vendors, restaurants and soooo many souvenirs! Basically anything you can thing of with Budapest on it or associated with the city you will find here. But also beautiful handcrafted works. There are 1200 booths in all… pretty impressive!
But what to eat??? Well, the Langos was so good yesterday, let’s get another one! And this maker kept piling on the toppings until I had two cheeses, sour cream, fresh paprika peppers, paprika paste, a pile of arugula and fresh cut salami… I could barely fold it in half to eat it! But is was delicious! And for dessert? A cinnamon & sugar chimney cake filled with Nutella… yes please! I also left the market with beef salami and pork salami to take home, plus a few souvenirs.
    Pest City Tour
After lunch we have another tour, this time on the Pest side. We will have the opportunity to discover the history and landmarks of the city such as the colossal Hungarian Parliament Building (which is the third largest in the world), a symbol of the city that is spectacularly illuminated each night. We also visit Hero’s Square with it’s iconic Millennium Monument. The most poignant stop is a visit to the ‘Shoes on the Danube Bank’ memorial, commemorating the lives of Jewish Hungarians who perished during World War II.
Did you know that Buda & Pest were two different cities? They were combined about 150 years ago to become the capital of Hungary.
Back onboard, we are now setting sail North on the Danube into our next country. What a view from the upper deck of the ship as we sail out of the city!

You are wise about what information to present. The picture you paint of the locations you visit is detailed without being tedious, vivid without being trite. I'd bet a nickel you inspire others to travel.

That is a GREAT area to tour. The 'castle' wasWAY overdue for renovation both externally and internally. My cousin worked at the National Library up there and yes, the decor inside was very 1970s and communist style. The Istvan Palota was a theater for dance productions, but theymoved to the new modern National theater. I run hot, as well andthis is MY FAVORITE time of year to go back 'home' to visit the family.

I was wondering the same, remembering the questions we were asked by the immigration officers, that situation was quite intimidating. They even had a board with pictures of all kinds of food that was not allowed to bring into the USA. That might have been different for us Europeans, apparently it was no issue bringing the sausages back to the US in the checked bag (see her comment a bit further down).
