Traveling to Budapest + Hungarian Food Tour!!

  • I (Alisa) am doing something I have never done before… traveling outside of the USA without Jason. I will be taking a river cruise on the Danube with AmaWaterways from Budapest to Vilshofen, with stops in Bratislava, Vienna, Krems, Spitz, Linz and Passau.
But first, I have to get to Budapest! This is three flights for me from Alexandria, LA (AEX) to Atlanta (ATL), then an overnight flight to Amsterdam (AMS) and after a 3 hour layover, the final flight to Budapest (BUD). It is a looong travel day! Overall the flights go rather smoothly, but I was surprised by how small the seats were on the overnight flight! I didn’t even have enough room to cut my food in my dinner! It was with Delta on an Airbus 350… if you can avoid this plane, do it! On the bright side, I was able to get Stroopwafels in Amsterdam!!
Once we arrived in Budapest (my friend Sarah and I), we check into our hotel and head towards the river for a local Hungarian dinner of potato stew… and then a night time ride on the river for an Unlimited Prosecco Tour. I have always said that the world is more magical at night, when it is all lit up! And seeing Budapest from the river is the best way to see it! The Parliament building stands out, but so many more landmarks! Everywhere you look is breathtaking! And not just the buildings on land, but the bridges as well. Each bridge has it’s own style and feel to it… and, of course, they are illuminated too.

The next day, it’s time to eat! The best way to learn a new culture is through the food and an organized tour with a guide who not only know the food, but the city! A walking food tour will give you so much more than something to eat! You will learn the history and special locations of the city as you walk from one stop to another.
Stop one is Dose Coffee for strudel and coffee. We could choose any type of coffee, tea or hot chocolate we want (hot chocolate for me) and both apple and poppy seed strudel. Both were so good, but the poppy seed was a delightful surprise! It was so much better than it sounded and had a sweet chocolate taste to it.
Stop two is Retro Langos for ‘Hungarian pizza’. This dish really isn’t pizza… it is fried bread with sour cream, lots of garlic and a local Hungarian cheese. It doesn’t sound tasty but oh my gosh it is!!! So surprisingly good! But be prepared to taste garlic for many more hours!
Stop three is for goulash at Mokka Cukka Wine Bar… and since it is a wine bar, we also chose from three local wines for a tasting. Here, our tour guide also gave us a shot of Palinka… a local fruit spirit that is very strong… think moonshine!!!! The goulash was delicious and was even better once I added the paprika and garlic paste… yum!!!
Stop four is Rokfort Restaurant for potato and sausage casserole. This may have been my favorite dish! The potatoes were so buttery, the sausage was spicy and there were so many more elements including boiled egg, cheese, garlic and a sauce that I am not sure what all was in it… it was yummy! And I was so full I didn’t think I would be able to eat again all day! This was an amazing tour!!

Gulyás (goulash) was that person who guarded the herd (cattle) in plains for days or weaks all alone only with with dogs (cattle herd in hungarian is gulya). Gulyás made this meal in cauldron under the sky above open fire so the name of the meal come from here. The whole name is "gulyás leves" goulash soup means the soup made by gulyás.
Glad you were here to visit this little country. I hope next time you can come to visit with your partner together and not just the Capitol but the countryside as well.

Love that you are in Budapest! My grandmother was born there. It was my desire to visit one day and in 2019 we went to Budapest on a Danube River cruise on Viking. It was absolutely the best vacation ever! The stew looked amazing! I brought home the best smoked Paprika from Budapest.

I got your link due to cruising. My family is still in Hungary. Glad you enjoyed Bp. You were still in tourist/expat zones where you stayed, bc $15 a plate for dinner for regular citizens there is pretty high. But, you were inall more restored areas of the city. Lots to see there, and Hungarian food is the best, especially bread, paprika and homemade plum palinka. You had some of my favorite foods of layered potatoes, gulyas soup and the paprika potatoes, and my two desserts of Somloi galuska(the cakes) and the poppyseed bread pudding. Have fun!

We loved this video!! Hungarian paprika is "sweet" compared to its US counterpart that is often smoked. In your store or market look for the Szeged brand of Hungarian paprika. Its one, if not the only, sold in the states and it was a staple in my Hungarian grandma's kitchen.

I've had Palinka from Romania, so basically the same, made from grapes. Oh MAN that is sneak up on you and bite you in butt "moonshine" U.S. "moonshine" ain't got NOTHING on that. My daughters ex fiancee was born in Romania. The one thing she did get out of that relationship was traveling to Romania, Hungry, the black sea in that area and seeing a "music festival". Those memories she will Never forget. That is NOT a drink for the faint of heart. It's STILL dangerous at ANY level.
