  • Here is the second and final part of the Datsun documentary of Paul Newman contesting the 1978 SCCA Runoffs at Road Atlanta. This time, Newman tackles the C/Production sports car race, and its a ripper! Lots of action, and unpredictability. Watch it and enjoy!

    I got to watch Paul Newman come up at Lime Rock year after year. He was one of the smoothest drivers ever. Steady and smooth.

    I remember seeing Paul mid 90's at ( I think it was Watkins Glen) in his camping area. I worked for a crew in the IMSA firehawk series. I think at that time Paul was racing an RX7 ?. He was very low key as a famous person and you could tell he loved everything about racing, just like the rest of us.Those 24 hour races working in the pits bring back awesome memories.

    I watched Newman win two races, in a row, at a SCCA National race at Summit Point in the early 70's. The first race he took the checkers first in his Triumph TR6, then the next race same thing, in his Datsun 510. I still see his 510 from time to time at Historic and Vintage races, still in his racing colors, gray and black with the PLN over the drivers door. 🏁🏁🏁

    Newman was a bit like Lee Marvin who said he only did the movies so he go to Australia every year fishing on the Great Barrier Reef .. Maybe Paul did movies so he could go racing.

    Newman's first SCCA Championship was scored at the wheel of a privately entered Triumph TR-250 (later redesignated by Triumph as a TR-6)

    I was Frank Leary's crewchief. Incidentally, Casey Mollett who finished third was using Frank's spare engine.

    The production classes are a real dogfight, I ran a E/P RX7 in 2000/01. I bought a 125 shifter kart to get more seat time and the bang for the buck favored the kart so I sold the Mazda. Shifters are a whole nother world. I was lucky enough to do some track days with my neighbor and occasional workout partner Helio Castroneves, great times.

    In the beginning of Nissan racing these cars champion spark plugs did head work develop and cam specs ,a guy named Art Early was responsible for that research. As a young teenager I would go with my parents over to his house as they played cards on Saturday night. He would show me his go fast streetcars that he was building for his son . After this Nissan work was all developed, Nissan took full control and did their own manufacturer ing of all the future racing parts for Paul Newman.

      Exactly David!! They (whoever "they" are) took a great track and chickened it down. I have only raced on the old track and coming off the back "straight" at full tilt and negotiating the turn under the bridge was a great challenge. Unfortunately the driver demographics have changed and there is pressure to make tracks "safe" which to me changes the essence of the sport. They could of at least just made a bypass and left the old configuration in tact like they did with the kink at Road America. But I guess time moves on.

      I agree . I raced bikes there in the 80’s and it was a scary track and fun at the same time. On 1 lap I went through “gravity cavity” fine but got wide under the bridge and ran up the bank to the left. I kept it upright and kept going.
