Umarex Origin 22 Air Rifle PCP Handpump & Chronograph Gun Review

- How many pumps does it take to air up the Umarex Origin 22 PCP Air Rifle with an HPA handpump? Which airgun pellet is best for the Origin .22 and what is the muzzle energy of the Origin using a chronograph. In this Umarex air gun review, JB demonstrates how many pumps it takes. Just 13 pumps will allow you to get one full-power shot, but with just 15 pumps you'll be up to 1500 psi. He shows that it takes just 118 pumps to fill the Origin .22 caliber from Umarex all the way up.
Look up the Origin online here: www.umarexusa....
In the second part of this airgun video, three pellets are put over the chronograph in an indoor shooting range. A JSB pellet, a Polymag, and an H&N. The chrony reading and weight of the better performing air gun pellet, the JSB 18.13 grain, equate to a great small to a smaller-mid-size game hunting air rifle. An airgun that could be deemed suitable for real air gun hunting.
Because of the readily available resource of air, The Umarex Origin .22 should also be considered as part of your long term survival gear. Prepping to survive with airguns can be advantageous for numerous reasons including the report or lack of noise, no need for gun powder, the ability to cast your own lead pellets if need be. Plus with a little ingenuity, you can find other uses for the hand pump that comes with the Umarex Origin.

Very interesting. Firstly I am very impressed with the rifle. It suited the JSB which is no surprise as the softer lead seals very well in most barrels. I was amazed with the pump as I was always led to believe they where much harder work and would take a few hundred pumps to get up to 200 bar on a sub 12flb rifle. I use a 7ltr bottle but would seriously think about getting a pump for my BSA Ultra MMC that is set at 10.8 flb in .22. I could actually do with the cardio :)
He was only slightly winded. Not too bad. Watched a guy do 250 pumps once... ya... not me.

Boy am I glad I bought a Umarex Air Compressor! I am 77 and a disabled veteran, could never pull 120 pumps on a manual pump. Great video, thanks..
I've already decided to buy this as my first PCP.
Either gonna buy it from Air Gun Depot or Umarex directly.
It's a great entry level gun to get my feet wet.
Thanks for this review!
You're welcome and thank you for the support.
What we need is a pcp hand pump that is half as much work to pump or a smaller air cylinder on rifle like 50 cc or so company are not putting enough effort to making hand pumps any better .people will continue to buy hand pumps having no idea how hard they are to pump .thank you for showing how hard It is to pump up a pcp air gun I know you were more tired then they showed on camera . It is not an impossible task but someone needs to make hand pump better .when I'm done pumping I don't even want to shoot anymore .if you look online anywhere you will have a hard time finding any videos where people such as your self are pumping up pcp air guns start to finish because it will detour people from buy them .when some one buys a pcp hand pump they THINK IT WILL BE LIKE PUMPING UP A BICYCLE TIRE BUT IT IS MORE LIKE PUMPIN UP A TRACTOR TIRE NOT FUN AT ALL .I HOPE UMREX WILL BE THE COMPANY TO TAKE PCP HAND PUMPS TO THE LEVEL THAT NEEDS TO BE At. Maybe you could make the pcp hand pump cylinder bigger in diameter or make the pump tube longer to create more leverage on the downward stroke or make the pump Handle more ergonomic if with longer and different Handle variations. Those are some of my ideas on how to make a pcp hand pump more like what it should be a pleasure to use and not a punishment. I myself look forward to seeing if umarex Is up for the challenge . We would all like to own a pcp hand pump such as this .thank you for you're time.
Actually, it was not as difficult with that particular rifle as your text leads one to believe. Yes, JB was a little winded after a little over 5 minutes of steady but methodical pumping, but not as if he had jogged a block. Small sweat, but not major. He took about a 15 minute break before heading to the range. We have worked on some pumping tech. It is more difficult that one might think to solve. Lengthening the tube would be a problem for those under 6'2" of height. Thanks for the suggestions. Passing them along.
doofus, this is exactly what you claim you so desperately need. it pumps up way faster than other pumps and you'll likely never pump it up from empty to full, except maybe out of the box if it ships empty. literally this is the innovation you're whining about not existing
I came across the origin for the first time in Academy Sports, I am quite intrigued by this pcp. I've always wanted one but couldn't get into the world of pcp because of pricing and that I didn't want to be disappointed with the performance of it. I like to small game hunt and target plink but shyed away from the pellet rifle realm after I had bad experience with a gamo rifle that I had over 100 bucks in. This seems to fit my needs but will continue to research it before I pull the trigger on one

I'm liking the look of that rifle more every time i see it.
It has a certain kind of appeal. At first you're like, seen it, but upon another look, and especially if you shoulder it, you'd like, "I kinda like this." 😉
I just bought this kit. Was very excited to get a pcp with and pump. The rifle is actually nice looking and the trigger was good. It didnt pump up to 2500 psi the first time, before blowing off steam. The second time it didnt even pump up to 2100 psi. Then it leaked everything out. The pump didnt work from the start. I did everything the manual said. I have a friend who has a pump, and thats when I found out the rifle didnt hold air and the pump it came with didnt work. Its a shame, cause the rifle is nice looking and feels solid. Sending it back. Wondering if I should try again. The people who have ones that work seem to love them.
Your company is exceptional , good quality , nice designs and a both co2 / pcp , awesome . I like your military replica ( the boy in me ) and I save up for this new model , my first umarex and first pcp .
Thank you very much!
If they didn't zoom out I'd ask who the pump stunt double was... lol
ROTFL! That woulda been nice.
Such of a great affordable bundle of great quality for your money. All in one. This rifle came to us by umarex to cover all shooters need. Perfect for new people getting introduce into a PCP world👍👌
Thanks for the vote!
I own FX rifles and Texan big bores costing many times the msrp of this rifle.
Evenso, I'm very impressed with how far we've come among entry lever pcp rifles. They perform unlike entry level.. Very cool..
Usually, I need to scan thru many videos to find all the answers I'm looking for when researching a rifle, but this video was comprehensive in answering them all..
Gonna pick this one up to play with..
Thanks for the post..
JSBs are SOOOOOOOOOO NICE
Just ordered one today can't wait for it to be processed an shipped. Ive always wanted to buy a pcp air rifle, finnaly gonna get one. You don't see many videos of these on youtube. This rifle is a joy to shoot. Side lever. 10-rounds. Simple hand pump does the job to fill it. Saw where Shooter1721 put some FX 18s through it with great accuracy!
We know you enjoyed it. 😄
I think you’re confused. That was another airgun the air venturi avenger. That air rifle is way more powerful thats why he used slugs in it. They look the same though.

Adam, my Seneca Aspen PCP has my great Benjamin Prowler sitting there collecting dust. Now I call single shot airguns muskets. The side lever actions are great.

@Kyle O do you like it?
7: 30, we could have learned the velocities thru the pressure range if the air chamber was left to declining, when we had already learned the velocities thru the higher psi. And the best performance is sometimes in the middle pressure range.
Yep. A whole other video. Check out the Umarex Origin Owners page on Facebook if you happen to use that platform: facebook.com/umarexoriginownerspage
And the clear winner is as Gomer Pyle would say surprise surprise surprise jsb 18.13s !!
Could tune down the velocity adjustment for a lighter pellet. But why. 😉 Thanks for tuning in.
Does the cocking lever have to cocked to fill the tank ?
Yes
Very impressive rifle ... and shooter.
Constructive criticism: Show the "Origen" as you shoot.
Thanks for the suggestion. Appreciate it.
So this is really exercise equipment but with the added perk that you can go in your back yards afterwards and kill shit with it......outstanding!
That's one way to look at it. Light cardio mostly? Not bad though.
@@UmarexAir BTW are there any dealers on the East Coast where one could be picked up?
Just for a moment there (when you reached for it), I thought you were going to remove the filler probe, without bleeding the air.
Overtime, how long can the rifle stay pressurized? Say I pump it up one weekend for hunting small game but don't use it, will it be good till the following weekend pressurized?
Yes. It should maintain its pressure. Should it not, we recommend you call customer service 479-646-4210 ext.7
Very well explained
Glad it was helpful!
so I've heard these hand pumps are infamous for failing within weeks of use even when folks are careful. How long is the warranty good for on the pump?
If hand pumps are used properly (give them breaks so as not to overheat) and maintained as per manual, then they will last. The hand pump has a 1-year warranty. The Godfather of Airguns wrote this in one of his blogs, "How long will a hand pump last?
I own three hand pumps and none of them has ever given me a moment's trouble. The oldest is about 11 years old, and the newest is five years old. I use a pump more often than many airgunners because of my writing. The modern hand pump is a wonder of technology. It works fine when used as intended, but it will not tolerate a lot of abuse. If you are a careful person who wants to enjoy shooting PCPs on your own schedule, I believe there should be a hand pump in your future."
I have hand pumps well over 5 years old and never an issue. It's pumped a lot of guns.
You gotta pump slow like he did , and they come with extra orings for when you abused it . Dont leave it outside in a freezing car and use it like that , keep it inside
@@UmarexAir I added a few drops of silicone oil under pump handle and a light coat of silicone grease and oil on pump rod the day I got it . Lol
What kind of maintenance is required for the gun and pump
love your videos! That being said, I was wondering when you reload the weapon. Sometimes when I pull back to reload mine, it doesn't lock in place. doesn't make the clicking sound, and it becomes hard as I pull it back, which is different from how it was when I first had it. Is there a way to fix it? Thanks!
It sounds like there may be a slight disconnect between the bolt arm and the spring due to the connection being bent. This can cause the pellet rifle to not fully sear upon pulling the cocking lever back. We do not recommend attempting to make any repairs to this rifle yourself. Please give us a call at 479-646-4210 ext. 507 to speak with one of our gun techs and set up a repair case.
@@UmarexAir ok thank you
Was the hammer spring adjusted on this rifle before shooting?
What's the best price bro
How is the tunability of the rifle? Would like the rifle to be shooting at a lower fps. Either that or will there be a .177 option coming?
There's an adjustment at the rear of the receiver so you can tune it down a good deal and up some from factory setting. No .177. Not enough demand.
@@UmarexAir the ability to get down around the 12ftlb would be nice.
No one wants a 177?!?!?! What?!?!
Good evening, could you tell me if the umarex octane elite 5.5 and the umarex gaunlet 5.5 have the same power in terms of impact energy, they have the same cages because I am about to buy one and I do not know why I would like the most powerful
If you have a high pressure air source we would lean to the Gauntlet. Or the new Origin.
I just bought an Air Venturi G9 pump and a Notos air rifle. What did you say @5:48? "Press your ____[?] of the gun..."
"Pressure stayed in the gun."
I need to workout more and get in better shape if I ever want to be able to do that many pumps.😳
That makes a few of us. LOL.
How do these rifles do with say a 22 slug with 23 grains -30 grains?
I guess they don't use foot pumps due to the short stroke, but that would probably take less effort, even if a lot more time.
We thought so too.
What scope are you using for that rifle in this video?
He said the extreme spread was pretty good but won't give us it lol.. it had an extreme spread of like 20/21 fps..that's not really good..but for the price it's not bad
Thanks for pointing that out.
Does it hurt to "dry fire" these PCP guns?
There are no videos showing how to insert magazine and cycle shots. I just purchased this rifle tonight and have followed the instructions in the manual only to find the bolt will not move forward with magazines loaded beyond frustrated 😵
Give us a call so we can figure out how best to help! 479-646-4210 ext.7. Our hours are Mon-Fri 8am to 5pm Central Time. Great catch on the lack of video for this specific rifle. It operates just like the Umarex Gauntlet and Origin. If the magazine was loaded correctly, the flat edge of the mag slides into the breech area with the clear plastic rotating piece facing the shooter.
I bought Elite X2, bought Vevor air pump. Trying to fill gun with 4,000 psi when I get to 1,000psi air comes out hose where its connected to pump, try to add more air and again the same. Anyone can give me some advise as to whats going on?
Can the air javelin kill a deer
I’m extremely new to pcp guns. So heres my question, why can’t I use a portable tire compressor to fill the gun?
They don't have enough psi to fill airguns, most regular air compressors top out around 150 psi and most airguns run on 3000 psi or more.
Does the gun need to be cocked as the instructions say. A friend of mine said it should be uncocked.
It must be cocked to fill it.
How long can you leave this gun with pressure in the tank? or does the time vary on the amount of pressure?
You can keep your PCP airguns filled, it doesn't hurt at all.
Once at 3k to 1900 the fps is very consistent
I want to buy this same gun, would I have to wait till it's completely out of air to start filling it up again?
No, it's actually easier and faster if it's not completely empty.
What happens if i load 2 pellets by accident? Does it shoot both or doesnt shoot at all?
It will typically shoot both if there's still plenty of air pressure. Shoot into a safe direction with a proper backstop.
I just received my origin .22 today and it's my first pcp gun. The barrel and shroud have up and down play within the barrel band. Is this normal in a pcp? This would be completely unacceptable in a powder burner.
There may be a little bit of movement which should cause no issue. If it is excessive movement, please check the screw on the barrel band for tightness or call our gun techs: 479-646-4210 ext.7
What's the best pellet for this rifle in terms of velocity and stopping power?
Any suggestions?
Of course! Ours likes the JSB 18.13 grain. Dial the velocity up.
Try those JSB .217 slugs at 25gr or the HN .218 slugs from 21-27 grain. Buy a variety pack of HN and find what's best.
Slower fps but way more stopping power that a Diablo shape pellet.
I purchased this gun today loaded up the magazines inserted a magazine into the breach but the side lever will not push forward what is going on
We encourage you to call us so we can help... if your magazine is loaded correctly, there should be a pellet in the ready position. If there is a solid surface instead and not a pellet, then the bolt will not go forward. We can assist by phone.
the polymag shorts ? will the regular polymags fit ? one thing i learned LONG ago ,the longer ,heavier ammo are most times more accurate ....i shoot the h&n HORNETS with no problem and all sorts of ammo ,these clips are pretty good at assorted ammo ! speaking of hornet ,try them better accuracy .i noticed accuracy wasnt as good with the polymag look a like,,, the GAMO redfire ! @@UmarexAir Update !!! Just got my long awaited Origin , I’m super stoked !
How many shots per fill will a person get?
You lose about 500psi per 10 shots.
Can you please sell this gun also without the pump ?
Perhaps down the road. That's being discussed. The pump can be used with other airguns. Good to have a back-up.
Why don,t you focus the camera on the chronograph so we can see the speeds
Thanks for the suggestion.
Still loving mine. The jsb Diabolo 18.13 def shoots the tightest groups. It does not like some of the HN pellets I've tried between 15-17gr. The crow magnums at 18.21gr shoot ok groups. Surprisingly the crosman premier HP's at 14.3gr shoot only slightly larger groups than the 18.13gr diabolos. Love the soft lead skirts of the jsbs but man I wish they could figure out a way to ship them without 1/4 of the skirts getting deformed. Find I have to hand pick through my jsb tins and make two different piles. Lol
Been noticing that too, the skirts. Didn't do any selection during this test.
@@UmarexAir just got some HN Baracuda 21.14gr today. Impeccable at 25yards with the Origin. Two magazines tested so far and I thought diabolos shot tight groups. Daaaang
Does your barrel and shroud move up and down within the barrel band on yours? It does on mine and I'm not sure if this normal (my first pcp), on a powder gun it would be completely unacceptable.
@@wmwm2194 shroud moves, yes, barrel doesn't. I made a set of short baffles and placed it in the empty space between the end of the barrel and shroud.
@@dca7222 my barrel is definitely moving along with the shroud. I wonder if I received a defect

We have not test that particular aspect, we do encourage you to follow this thread: hardairmagazine.com/reviews/umarex-origin-its-the-best-first-pcp-air-rifle/
Why would you want to do that? Defeats the purpose of a PCP
I must have a defective hand pump that came with my rifle, won’t let you pump past 2900 psi and than you literally have to do a hand stand to get the pump to go back down (not joking). Tried taking the pump apart to install re build kit and they got that bottom ring wrenched on so tight there’s no way you are getting it to unscrew so that kit is useless. Love the rifle not impressed with the pump it came with. Hopefully I can get another one and see if it actually pumps to 3625 like advertised.

Why do they always advertise velocities that they never achieve when they put it on the chronograph in the videos? It just seems like deceptive advertising instead of just true honesty and transparency. It was no where near 1025fps.
The older airgun companies always use a very lightweight pellet to achieve a fast velocity. We have to compete with that. Regardless, an air rifle barrel is no different from a firearm barrel in that it's going to like a certain round in terms of accuracy.
Because it is advertised with alloy pellets.
Not powerful enough (for a PCP gun). My calculation shows 24 - 25 fpe (on average, depending on a specific pellet). Such a BIG gun, operating at a pressure as high as this should yield 30 fpe, a minimum.
Your calculations are correct so you wouldn't want to hunt small game any larger than a raccoon at fairly close range and with proper shot placement.
@@UmarexAir Yeah, but some other reviewers tested the gun and found 40+ fpe (cal. 22) and a few fpe more in cal. 25.
