I've always wondered why this episode had such different designs, it really weirded me out as a kid, like "Did I step into a different dimension or something?!?"
It's likely that this episode was the original pilot that was used get the series to syndication. Also the costumes that Lothar is wearing matches the original action figure.

I remember a few cartoons in the 80's that in the middle of the season showed the pilot episode like that Inspector Gadget episode when he had a moustache.
I'm glad some of the earlier comments explain why the character designs have all changed. I was wondering if a second animation studio had taken over or something.
Jedda looks really good in that character design in this episode.
Yeah, but I’m not a fan of Ming’s design in this one.
I really don’t care for her personality she’s much more acerbic then the previous character, it’s like an entire personality change.

In the original comic strip he wasn't necessarily based in Africa, just a generic "jungle". In the 1996 movie he was based in India.

Funny that Toei accidentally used a few pilot designs for the characters then the finalised ones in this episode, whoops! :D

@@trevorbrown_artist That is why. For what ever reason, Toei used the pilot designs of the characters and not the finalised designs. It may be possible that this was the first episode that they animated, before the designs were changed.
Jeda looked a bit more modern than usual, I always wonder how Ming sees everything important happening on the earth lol:)

these are some of the names I had for the ideas of defender of the Earth the movie. only two positions left is LJ son of lothar and mandrax young friend so any ideas for actors to fill these roles?

I vote for Jaden Smith for LJ since LJ’s specialty is his martial arts and well Jaden was pretty kick ass in Karate Kid. As for Kshin, I don’t know… Ian Chen?
