- Death, Detroit’s First Punk Rock Band recorded, “Keep On Knocking” and “Politicians In My Eyes in 1975, released it in 1976. The songs got two airplay’s on a local cutting edge radio station. Clive Davis, then president of Columbia Records wanted to sign the guys, but he asked them to change their name, they said no. Now 40 years later that record is worth thousands of dollars. I met the guys over the weekend and they were real cool. They were glad to be back in their hometown of Detroit. They have a documentary movie, “A Band Called Death.”

"but the wait's been too long" has an aggravatingly more impactful meaning when they're playing the song 40 years later
Jesus, that bass is INSANE
Awesome that these guys are still rocking
This song would be difficult to play fast live. It’s really long and full of ongoing 16th notes
Only the two. Rip to the brother that started it.
@@mattyraddy5913 I'm trying to learn it now. So far ahead of their time. Really a great song.
@@mattyraddy5913 the hi hat pattern is very fast and you need a technique to do it I could only imagine playing it live
In out current situation here in 2020 this song is surprisingly relevant
Nothing changes I guess
Indeed
It always will be.
2022 called. And it said "THOSE TWO FACED FUCKERS! PROTECT IT MY ASS!"
I can personally vouch for how difficult the 16th note hi-hat pattern in this song is at the original tempo, and the unisons that Dannis plays throughout the bridge are also really freaking taxing. I kinda like that the reggae stuff Bobby and Dannis have been playing together shows through a little here. A little slower tempo, but a really nice groove. And the bass and drums are so freaking LOCKED IN. Must be so cool to make up a kickass rhythm section with your brother.
RIP David Hackney. You truly were ahead of your time. As someone who's been suicidal, and whose father died severely mentally ill, missing and homeless, your concept around death really hits home. I get it completely. The whole father/son/brother thing, as well as the idea that we really should work at understanding and facing death, as it's a part of life for all of us.
Your music lives on, man; and through your amazing brothers, no less!!
Yes, I just wrote that to a dead man, and I don't care. Maybe some random people will see it and be inspired to keep living somehow. Or just to keep going and doing the things that are important to them, because you never know who might appreciate it and what it might mean to them. That's the beauty of this story.
I've been a multi genre drummer for 27 years. It's definitely a "give me a sec" afterwards beat.
No one is ever truly dead.
its a bit exhausting, but not difficult as in "hard to learn". i'd rather have the original tempo with the drummer doing a few different things when it gets too exhausting (maybe some hi hat triplets (are they called triplets?) or double handed hi heat playing for a few beats), instead of almost half the tempo. and if you have the right technique, it shouldnt even be exhausting. the right techique for stuff like that is the thing thats actually difficult (to learn)
The original is definitely a be on top of your game tempo.
YES! Love that bassline. The outro always makes me tear up.
Our favorite Death song. That machine gun 1,2,3, shout is indeed punk! Samuel L. Jackson on lead guitars! LOL!
just put the playback speed to 1.25 and you'll get the classic experience
Airwrekc, lol that made me laugh because of how true your statement is and that a lot of us probably didn't think to do that....the only part that sounds offf is the chorus section.
lolllllll
Detroit is the best music city in America. Mo town, to bands like death, to the most unique techno scene in the country and years before it caught on. Detroit and New Orleans king and queen
This shit is dope!! It was dope in the 70’s and it’s dope now and forever. A song for all ages!
arguably the first punk band. no flames please. yeah! they're still going man! sound good!
I don't know why people keep pushing that they were the first punk band when MC5 and the Stooges were before them. Death is great though
Detroit has always been ahead of the times. Even though kraftwerk is clearly the major electronica pioneer, but detroit modified it to idm that caught fire round the world
@@RobotReg en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_proto-punk_bands
M.C 5, Stooges, and death are all listed as proto-punk. They werent punk bec the culture didnt exist at a level for it to be more than garage rock style. I mean The Pogues arent exactly what you think of when hearing punk, but shane macgowan and spider stacey are punk rock as fuck. Especially Shane
@@TheFamousMockingbird I mean Shane was in a punk band before the Pogues
Los saicos is the first punk rock band man
Their history is crazy, I first of Death at a punk listening party. These guys were way ahead of the curve.
Death is awsome and I'm glad that finally got there due
"Politicians are like diapers. They need to be changed often and for the same reason." - Mark Twain
Waking up in a bad mood? Put this track on a few times -- you can walk out of your house ready to take on the world!
It’s wild how fast this song is for the time period. 16th note high hats in 2/4. Fucking crazy
album's older than i am and holds up better!
The documentary on these brothers is one of the best ones I've ever seen. Got me really emotional. This song is epic. Long live Death!
Great band !!!
Superb guitar solo and bass/drums backing to go with it
These guys are still ahead of their time.
Great song from a great band.
OMG I Love DEATH!!!! I would have TOTALLY Rocked Out to Death back in the day if they were given a chance to be!!!
Yoo I was not expecting the screams. Fit perfectly
Ain’t no party like a Detroit party
This is my first DEATH and I wanna do it Again!! This is EPIC PUNKROCK!
this is one of the best things I've ever heard in my life and I only got to know it in 2023.
Bad Ass band Death original guitarist( David )that named the band was heaven sent just genius Punk out forever you guys also Bobby and Dannis !!
I just found out if you put the playback speed on 1.25x, it's very close to the tempo of the album. Give it a try. Just about dead on.
Best comment
Damn, that Worked!
They are amazing even live.come to tampa we will show u how the crowd should be.
This band gives me so much hope for the future
The first show of the tour was in Somerville, Ma., not sure why. I was there and it was sick. Check out the Black Pumas’ cover of this song
I just found out abuot them today!!! What a sad life I lived so far. I'm so happy!
Awesome... Greatings from Germany.
Love this band
Never underestimate the power of Death!
Just like Agent Orange, putting out a Darkness and Original version.

I came here after hearing the Black Pumas sing this song. I like it!
I remember wwww W4.
Viva Death!
I can’t see them touring with FishBone & Rage Against The Machines!
Put at 1.25x. Sounds like the original
Touches of Joy Division - Shadowplay in the bass
Is that where Dee Dee Ramone got the 1234 count in....
WOW WTF IS THIS RIPPING
Bow Down....
L. Kravitz all over again. Yeah, I know he was after them.
No diss but they ain't the first punk band from Detroit mc5 is good song tho
Man, they got so cheated.
The Brits stole punk from us and sold it back to us.
Check Los Saicos, Punk was born in south América
Where punk rock started is irrelevant, punk has always been a mindset first and foremost and started in england
There's this other guy from Detroit named iggy that recorded his first punk album 1969 so...just sayin
K
Lol iggy was also the dad in Pete and Pete
Actually it was The Stooges, not just Iggy solo.
You can tell so many bands ripped off these guys. Red hot chili peppers comes to mind
white dude saying this
it wasn't just cause of the name
Not fast enough.
Too slow - but that usually happens to these old bands
Certainly a bit slower than the record, but it still sounds great. Same message and soul.
It needs to sound nastier but that’s what age does to ya.
Exactly. It's probably mostly due to the drummer I'd guess. Those 16th notes on the hi hate are pretty quick on the album version. Might be tricky for an older wrist to play em. Still sounded great.
@@SubaruWRXspdManual Agreed. The bass line needs the tempo but think, these guys are likely 65-70 years old. Not their fault at all, age does a number on you. Lucky enough we can get to see them play at all.
@@wackjob7 yeah aging really is a bitch on the joints, imagine how great it would be to watch them play in their prime though
By 7:20 the bass line has morphed into "NEW DAWN FADES" by Joy Division. Not only was DEATH a proto-punk band before punk. It also was a PROTO-POST-PUNK BAND BEFORE PUNK!!!!
Not their best performance
