I see engineering as a way to make the world better using my set of skills and the money part is actually a secondary necessity to do more good. In the end I hope that I lived a meaningful life rather than chasing money.

Some of these companies got or still get a bad rep for enviromental abuse, but to them I say Kuznets curve. Let us continue diving down this rabbit hole, we have come a far way to help our environment, though we still got a ways to go.

hey Jake my goal is to become a Software Engineer and then eventually a Software Architect, I live in the Bay Area so there are plenty of jobs. But I am having trouble choosing a major, I am a senior in hs rn so I still have a little time to decide, but it’s between Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Sci. I noticed that you said to not do Software Engineering as a major but my school, SJSU, does have an ABET accredited Software Engineering program, if that changes anything? Also it might be hard to switch to CompSci since it’s impacted. So my question was if you think it’s worth trying to switch majors to SE or CS or just stick with my declared major which is CompE? (I could switch to SE a lot easier since CE and SE are within the same college, unlike CS)
Engineering can't make you crazy rich in the global sense Only stuff that pool in people or any forms of money can do that. The only way an engineer can be rich *purely through engineering* is by relative measures of being rich (3rd world country guy working for 1st world country) However an engineer can get his feet into business side (or really anything that pools in people or money) and make big bucks and become actually rich in global sense but note that you have to get into something else (which is not engineering) to be able to scale to that! Not dissing on anything but this is actually what happens❤ [Note: my definition of rich in global sense is having a few million bucks in USD bare minimum]
Should I take computer engineering or industrial engineering? I believe that industrial engineering will suit me really good since after I earn money, and gain good experience from work field, I'll start my own business/company, that's my goal.

He had no formal engineering education, so he went out and bought books and took courses to teach himself. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chuck Norris are self-taught actors. I am a self-taught typist. And now there is a business executive who became a self-taught engineer.
Wait, is that even a question ???? Best CEOs in the world are Engineers. France, Italy, Switzerland, and Belgium have Grande Ecoles schools that trains leaders from these engineering schools, and more reliably than business schools. Big corporations need smart people, not people who just want to balance finances. Creativity, optimization, thinking outside the box, risk strategy, and problem solving are the work of Engineers, even more so if they have advanced degrees or coupled with other training
Just finished my general electives .. will now start my EE In December. I’ll have my associates this coming summer 2023 and bachelors in fall 2024. I’ve started to apply for internships and appreciation ships as electric engineer in my area. Very excited

Hey thanks so much for being a fan :) Which clubs you spend time with depends on what you want to do afterwards. Find engineering clubs that pertain to your engineering future. Here are some examples: rocket team, solar power car, steel bridge, concrete canoe, robotics team, engineers without borders, etc. These are also engineering organizations and societies like: ASCE, ASME, IEEE for a few examples. And there are a tonnnnn of engineering organizations in varying niches, so you can join all those. At a career fair in my junior year, I saw a table where their 'who we hire' portion said, 'only mechanical engineers' which made me approach the booth initially, but when I saw the company I became confused. The were a real estate company. I asked the man what they did and he said, 'Oh we buy and sell high end real estate, mostly office buildings.' even more confused I asked, 'So...you have ME's help you with... sizing of...' I was thinking that if they had us helping with construction that _might_ make sense and, it isn't _unheard_ of for mechanical engineers to do that sort of thing, but civil and construction engineers, not to mention architects are typically more suited for it. He cuts me off, "Oh no, we don't do _any_ construction. We buy and sell offices, nothing else." Now the guy is grinning at my obvious confusion and just waiting for the question he knows is coming. I oblige him, "Then...why do you want mechanical engineers?" His grin widens and he said, 'You guys are problem solvers. Problem solves who are multidisciplinary and that translates into more than just tech and machines. You learn to solve problems in unique ways that the rest of us don't think of, that makes you valuable in any industry. We hire students as sales reps in this internship I'm offering. There will be opportunities and, I'll straight up tell you, if we like you _at all_ you'll very likely be offered a management position after you graduate. Engineers make great managers. Also, our CEO is a mechanical engineer, and about half of our board of directs are as well, several of them started with our company at the very internship I'm currently offering." I suppose I can see their logic, I don't know about engineers making great managers, I think we're just as suited to that role as anyone else, but I can see where they're coming from. I did not apply because...well I went to school for engineering *to become an engineer.* That job would probably become high paying if the agent was telling the truth but, a well paying job you don't love eventually just become a job you don't love. Keep that in mind people, a high paying crappy job is only worth it in the short term.

Idk man, a management position that early on in your career would make for a killer resume for future (hopefully more engineering related) jobs as you'll most likely end up managing other engineers anyway.
First off congrats for getting in and you should be proud of yourself. That is not an easy feat to pull off. It all depends on what you want. If you want to do robotics and autonomous systems then go for it. UC Berkeley is definitely worth it for sure.

Can you do one on electronic systems engineering technology? I got accepted into the program. And it is abet accredited. But someone told me that you can only be a technician with it. And I don’t know if that’s true or not.

Am I also going to be able to get into Machine Learning Engineering or Robotics & Automation Engineering with an Computer Engineering or Systems Engineering degree (Master) combined with further coding experience with hardware from side projects?
Hey thanks for the comment. Machine design is one of the 3 avenues within mechanical engineering. So if you like physical part design, go in this route. You will work with solid works and CAD and can be a product design engineer, manufacturing engineer, etc.
I think physics thinking can get you there. Theoretical minds are powerful. Elon and the youngest self made billionaire, Austin Russell, are physics people. If you look at the CEOs of many companies, they are run by engineers. If you peel away more layers, you will find they are mostly electrical engineers. They have this physics theoretical thinking that makes them smarter than even the average engineer. So yes. I think physics thinking can be great for CEOs. I do not think you should study physics though. Do EE.
There is almost no hireablilty without graduate school, so I cannot understand why study physics vs EE. Unless you are 100% sure you want your PhD for research or to be a professor, and what 17 year old senior in high school can say that? Physics is a pointless degree to me

Thank you ! The Louis Vuitton CEO is a civil engineer and Carlos Slim, the billionaire is a civil as well. Most of the founders are electrical engineers because they can code, they know technology, and they have advanced theoretical thinking unlike even a lot of other engineers. Plus, you're thinking of big F500 and technology companies. There are plenty of civil founders in the civil space. I think you should choose the major that is the best for you in general. Not one that can "help you become an entrepreneur". There are plenty of entrepreneurs in all majors that go on to found companies. Being an entrepreneur is about building a solution to a problem through a product or service. You need to be involved with an industry long enough to identify this issue and be interested in it enough to build something to fix the problem. Does that make sense? Hey cool question. You can’t really work two or any job at the same time. That’s fundamentally impossible. You can however work a job where you are accumulating multiple lanes of experience at the same time, like biomedical engineering for example. You’re not really a doctor, and you’re not really a scientist fully. But you may work with research and studies and design parts that a doctor may use. Does that help?

Wow, Jake thanks, I've been reading my favourite mags including Forbes, MIT Technology Review and the newspapers the Washington Post. So that I can learn what engineers are. My question is: Do these CEO's refer to themselves and the public as CEOs or Pr. Engineers?
Nice! Well they are firstly a CEO but their engineering element never really goes away :) they will always be both once they achieve CEO. All engineers are proud of their engineeringness forever, but few make it to CEO, thanks!

Can you tell me your insights on machine design mechanical engineering career please?
Hey thanks for the comment. Machine design is one of the 3 avenues within mechanical engineering. So if you like physical part design, go in this route. You will work with solid works and CAD and can be a product design engineer, manufacturing engineer, etc.
Do you think that physicist can make for great CEOs? I'm genuinely curious about what you think of this.
I think physics thinking can get you there. Theoretical minds are powerful. Elon and the youngest self made billionaire, Austin Russell, are physics people.
If you look at the CEOs of many companies, they are run by engineers. If you peel away more layers, you will find they are mostly electrical engineers. They have this physics theoretical thinking that makes them smarter than even the average engineer. So yes. I think physics thinking can be great for CEOs.
I do not think you should study physics though. Do EE.

There is almost no hireablilty without graduate school, so I cannot understand why study physics vs EE. Unless you are 100% sure you want your PhD for research or to be a professor, and what 17 year old senior in high school can say that? Physics is a pointless degree to me

I am always inspired by your videos that how engineers could be CEOs and leaders in our society as it is one of my dreams. As a civil engineering student, it sometimes makes me doubt since there are hardly civil engineers ceos in reputated big companies. Now I have a chance to apply any majors that I like again, and I want to know your opinions since you are my fav youtuber. Can I also be one of the leaders you have mentioned in the vid with the degree of civil engineering ?

Thank you ! The Louis Vuitton CEO is a civil engineer and Carlos Slim, the billionaire is a civil as well. Most of the founders are electrical engineers because they can code, they know technology, and they have advanced theoretical thinking unlike even a lot of other engineers. Plus, you're thinking of big F500 and technology companies. There are plenty of civil founders in the civil space.
I think you should choose the major that is the best for you in general. Not one that can "help you become an entrepreneur". There are plenty of entrepreneurs in all majors that go on to found companies. Being an entrepreneur is about building a solution to a problem through a product or service. You need to be involved with an industry long enough to identify this issue and be interested in it enough to build something to fix the problem.

Yeh it totally makes sense. Guess I will stick with my civil dream and be a problem solver. It sometimes just makes me unsure when everyone talks abt computer science and technology stuff. Maybe I could use those stuff in civil engineering rt.

Hey cool question. You can’t really work two or any job at the same time. That’s fundamentally impossible. You can however work a job where you are accumulating multiple lanes of experience at the same time, like biomedical engineering for example. You’re not really a doctor, and you’re not really a scientist fully. But you may work with research and studies and design parts that a doctor may use. Does that help?
