This is a great doc for a great film! You really get an intimate portrait of McQueen and get to know his bitter-sweet son Chad. McQueen as a true artist never negotiated his vision and time proved his critics wrong. "Racing is life anything that happens before or after is just waiting." Le Mans wan intimate portrait of what it "feels" like to be a real car driver, it's a true visual poem to motor racing and the best example of the combination of visual storytelling and the visceral experience of the racing. Critics complained that there was no story or script but I guarantee you if they had anymore of a story or dialog it would have ruined this film. This was experimental filmmaking at it's best and it a tribute to the racers of that time. Le Mans was one of those rare perfect films where every line, every shot, every edit is exactly where it should be. No amount of words are waisted and every bit of dialog is succinct and to the point. No superfluous story, no pointless plot, no unnecessary scenes. If Truffaut or Godard made a racing movie it would have been like Le Mans. For race car drivers and racing fans this is the greatest racing films ever made and that is the ultimate endorsement.
Steve McQueen passed away 44 years ago today. This documentary did a good job of showcasing a point in his life where everything was fractured around him but he was still determined to see his vision through. RIP Steve McQueen and Chad McQueen who passed away on the 11th of September
Having now watched this documentary I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone who likes motor racing. For those who know the original film will know there is a dedication to David Piper in the credits, "for his sacrifice". The sacrifice was his right leg when the 917 he was driving stepped out at racing speeds on the approach to the original Maison Blanc. The photos of what was left of the car are appalling. Essentially Piper was left belted into the drivers seat which was attached to the frame that supported the engine - everything else was gone totally.
Does anyone know where exactly the 2nd scene in the original movie was shot? The one where Delaney drives his 911 down a narrow road surrounded by trees.
I have never understood why some people hate LE MANS (the film). I find it fascinating...and it's one of the best photographed films ever made. It might be McQueen's most personal film ever.
I d really like to see this because I race bikes, and never knew Steve was big dirt bike racer he loved it and he was also big on sport cars,u don't go to Le Mans if ur not because it way over there and not much glamour outside of Europe...I know he drive the PORSCHE 917 luv to know excactly what races he did run,I heard from Bruce Brown that he was doing his movie on Le Mon....but that's it...oh yeah Bruce's movie was this small picture about bikes called ON ANY SUNDAY...I missed winning my first road race of my career by about 6 feet, and won 50 bucks and got the video ON ANY SUNDAY...and that was where I learn about MCQUEENS RACING side work and hobby....pretty neat Malcom, pretty neat...hah hah
In the good old days you would ask people:"Who is a sex symbol?"And they would say,Steve McQueen,Paul Newman,Robert Redford. Now, you ask the women the same question and most of the times will chose boys, not men.Babyfaces.With very little masculinity in them.
+Justin That is exactly my point, homeless man.I'm 32.I am not a "grandpa".I am not an "old man",or an old fart" or whatever.Quite possibly,i am younger than you..Yet,todays sex symbols are manboys and babyfaces.I find that a bit disturbing.
+Justin "Faggots".."Faggot".Yet i am not a racist. You know, one of those people that belong on the lowest levels of the food chain..There is a great comfort in that thought. And a small piece of advice, since you're so young, you actually don't know any better. If you want to insult someone in the future,be a little more creative with your limited imagination.Be original.Don't repeat the same humiliating words the greastest majority uses.It actually backfires and it makes you look ridiculous and..lacking intellectually.
+Justin Did my argument work?It surely did.Because i do not see you trying any harder than that. One might say you're not trying at all! So,please stop exposing yourself. And tell me,what would be the point of participating in a convertation if you do not wish to do so?And i assure you,you didn't "ass blast me",don't flatter yourself! If you did i would, for example, report you to youtube for harassment and bullying,an action that would inevitably lead to closing down your chanel.Of course, that would be somewhat pointless, since you can always create a new one,but i would take comfort in the idea that i made you spent your time to do so and renew your contacts..oh,wait.You failed there too..You would piss me off though,if you actually followed my advice and present an intellectual challenge during this convertation,i mean if you were actually a challenge. But guess what.Kids use those insults,so back we go to my "you're immature" comment. So,why don't you try any harder.M8.
+bharvey2010 Look,he is not a "dickbag".He is a racist, sexist, pittyful and bittered hobo,i mean nobody really likes him, since he has no subscribers, right? On the other hand,we have some people who appreciate our company and since he does not,he is somewhat..bitchy and spiteful. It's undestandable,really...So,pay attention on the details.Precision.You must have precision on your insults!
Not the point. Steve was first a filmmaker and he created the best racing film ever made! He was a good racer and had nothing to prove. What he gave us, what he left behind is a cinematic masterpiece that truly gives the viewer what's like to be in the race.
Fun thing about Steve and dirt bikes its cool that he enjoyed it because if u ever been racing in the rain or the mud u gotta luv it to do it u end up wearing the dirt and that not something u could talk some rich or famous guy into the dirt part be like jello wrestling,in chocolate jello...JK....THANKS
'Ford vs Ferrari' is awful in comparison. Combine comedy with a thriller and there's no thrill no more. Add to that feeble and useless scenes that detract from the main plot (eg fighting with Shelby and his wife driving like crazy to get an answer from him). Mr McQueen's 'Le Mans' and Mr Frankenheimer's 'Grand Prix' both 'racing films' instead of a bit of this and a bit of that.
Rest in peace Dad, thanks for taking me to see this when I was seven in 1971.
Love, Euan X.
Almost 50 years later and this movie was way ahead of its time , arguably best movie McQueen ever made ....
This is a great doc for a great film!

I've watched it at least 2 dozen times and always catch a nuance I had not before. I'll watch it every year until the DVD wears through.
Steve McQueen : el HOMBRE. No hay otro igual ni lo habrá.Estilo, seducción , elegancia y carisma. Todo en una persona 👏👏💯💯❤️❤️

btw Steve McQueen NEVER raced in Le Mans
+Vanila Kung Correct. Insurance company that insured the film said 'no'. It gutted him to have to sit it out.
+Vanila Kung The only period actor to do it, was paul newman... and nowadays patrick depsey...
+Vanila Kung So they say...

Yepp - lots or rumours about him swapping seat with the drivers.

Against all advice he refused to add a STORY to it..!. Its men go fast, the end.... Not a big enough audience for that...no matter how well made.!
