    Gary, sounds like my fluid was just low. The transmission has slipped on take-off one time a few days ago since adding a little over 1/2 quart 3 weeks ago. This was a definite improvement. At that point, I checked the level in neutral after a 20 minute drive and the fluid level was in the middle of the hot mark. I added a little more fluid and am waiting to see if that cures it 100%. I didn't realize that fluid level was so critical on these transmissions. It was never below the safe area on the dipstick. I appreciate possibly the $5 fix, and your obvious expert knowledge and understanding of the subject.

    Thank you. I've been looking for two days for that info. I took my valvebody off. Cleaned everything up. That's when I discovered those two bolts. I wasn't sure enough about their location to reinstall the valve body. Have a good one. Got to get to work.

    Hi, Gary! First of all thanks for so good and helpful video! I have a problem with 4r75e transmission. I bought a 2007 F150 recently and it has no 4th gear. No fault code after driving 15 miles. I dropped the pan oil was very brown and was smelling burned. Also there was a small chops. The servo drive snap ring was in place and not damaged. Then I’ve checked valve body. There was nothing wrong all the valves was moving easy. I bought another transmission and before to put it in the car I inspected the new valve body. It was near perfect condition as well as transmission parts which I could observe. So I replaced transmission and I’ve got same exact issue no 4th gear. Everything looks and feels the same. 1st gear up to 2000rpm then shifts to 2nd drops rpm and after reaching 1800-2000rpm shifts to 3rd without dropping rpm then stays in 3rd about couple seconds and then shifts to 4th and revs rpm like on neutral. With OD off runs on 3rd gear. Can go 50mph with 2500rpm. Fluid temp 65-69C. So it drives and feels the same as old one. On my 2005 expedition transmission shifts different. 1st up to 2000 then shifts to 2nd and drop rpm then after 2000rpm shifts to 3rd and drop rpm then after 2000rpm shifts to 4th and drop rpm then at about 45mph and 2000rpm overdrive engages and it drop rpm again to about 1200rpm. Can it be a wiring or a PCM problem or it’s that’s another bad transmission. If it’s electric problem why I don’t get fault code? What kind of tests I can do to find out what’s wrong. I can perform pressure test but I don’t know which port to test and what kind of readings I should see. Any advice will be highly appreciated. Thank you a lot!

      Gary Ferraro yes and I just did a test drive. Here is the video that shows live data ruclips.net/video/GsSHupgLB_4/видео.html and that one ruclips.net/video/Bh-PwPK5-lg/видео.html shows gear command test. In both cases there is no rpm drop after 3rd gear was engaged and neutral condition after shifting to 4th gear. That video shows old transmission and valve body ruclips.net/video/T4Tullj4n_k/видео.html Fluid looks bad and this is after 5qt fluid change. 2-3 accumulator plate doesn’t holds inside of housing. Plate has big dent but no cracks.

As I mentioned I purchased this truck new it has only 34k miles and when I initially drained the pan the pan was not dirty at all. But the e-clip had broken and part of it fell in the valve body not letting it shift into 4th. Again Thanks

    Excellent video, I have a 1997 5.0 Explorer with a 4R70W. It shifted fine unit I went and played all weekend in the sand, 4k cookies and all. Now as soon as you let off the throttle when it is up to operating temp it downshifts to 3rd harshly at any speed from 4th. Cold the thing shifts and operates like a champ. Also when its operating temp if I leave OD off when in 3rd it will jerk harshly like its grabbing the OD band and then lets go and will stay in 3rd with no other issues, until it downshifts and goes back into 3rd. If OD is on it shifts to 4th normally and doesn't act up until I let off of the throttle. I dropped the pan and it was clean, I was expecting to find debris from the torque converter due to my high rpm playing. I was wondering if you have seen this, Thanks for any advice.

    It also slips into neutral if taking a hard corner at 25-30 mph. It will not engage into drive again until I either slow down to 15mph or manually shift to 2nd. It also is slow to engage drive (5-7) seconds from park. Reverse works immediately without issue every time. Thanks Again.

    Gary, not sure if you'll see this. I've got the OD into neutral issue, but also it will not engage drive until I've revved it to about 3K rpms. I've pulled the valve body for a rebuild, plus changing sensors. The OD servo snap rings are fine. Everything looks good and normal. Just wondering if the sensors, and/or valves could cause that not late RPMs to engage drive problem? With OD off, it shifts great and drives fine, even at highway speeds.

    Great video Gary. Question: I have a 05 5.4 with 4R75E. I have lost drive and OD. Doesn't shift out of 2nd when in drive with OD switched off. Let off the gas pedal and the tach free falls to 1k. I pulled the pan and valve body. No metal in the pan. Fluid was good. Snap rings and clips seem to be intact. I expected to find a broken clip and blockage. Could shifting solenoids cause this. No codes were thrown.

    Great video Gary. The 4R70W in my 2000 expedition shifts beautifully under normal driving conditions. At highway speeds while in OD, however, if I try to pass with wide open throttle the transmission flares badly, (i guess when downshifting to 3rd). Does that sound like a problem with the pressure regulator valve or solenoid regulator valve?

    • @GaryFerraro

    Gary, thanks for the informative video. I have this 4R70W in my 2001 F150. I have this exact neutral condition that occurs on take-off and I am planning to remove the valve body to check and replace everything you recommend. I obviously don't own this hone or bore tool for the solenoid regulator valve. This tool is very expensive! For a guy like me, what do you recommend? Replace the valve body? Hello, just want to make sure there are no codes present? and fluid level is full? does this happen all the time or only under heavy acceleration?

    • @iliketowatchthis
      @iliketowatchthis 8 лет назад

      +Gary Ferraro this problem occurs intermittently. If I stay in the accelerator it hits the gear hard like a neutral drop. Fluid level is full and doesn't smell burnt. Hard acceleration or normal does not make a difference, and fluid/vehicle temperature doesn't matter. I will say that I cannot trace back where the fluid was ever changed and it has 160k. I would estimate this neutral like condition to occur 5-10% of the time. I feel it happen, I just let off the gas so it doesn't cause damage, then try again and it will grab. 0-5mph is the speeds where it will slip, Initial accelerate from a stop or initial accelerate after making a slow speed turn

    • @iliketowatchthis

      +Gary Ferraro no codes present on my code reader, although I have a generic one. I am more experienced on Chevys. Do I need a special code reader to read transmission codes on a ford or would tranny codes show up on a regular $100 scanner that you can buy from the parts store?

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  8 лет назад

      Hello, Its very possible the solenoid reg valve is stuck, but accelerating after a turn could be a low fluid condition, this is what i would like for you to do first, when the car is stone cold(sit overnite) pull the stick out (dont start the car) and make sure its 2 1/2 inches above the full mark, if it is then its full.

    Great video. Got me to thinking I may have a valve body problem vice a internal transmission problem. Maybe you could give me a hint of the best approach to determining the correct path to take.
    I was driving my 2004 F150 4X4, with a 4R70W trans, at about 60mph, I went to kick it down to accelerate and the transmission seemed to slip. This raised my concerns as I had just completed a 1500 mile trip. Upon checking the fluid level, found it to be approximately 1.5 quarts low, added the needed fluid. However, it seemed sluggish at take off.
    Later that evening, after the truck had set and the weather had gotten cold, it didn't want to move. There didn't seem to be any lock up. I was able to limp the truck home, got a CEL and trans error.
    Went out today, pulled the codes: P0506 and P0720. Noticed that I seemed to have reverse, but very little torque in forward gear. Upon putting truck in drive, the CEL ignited and got trans error again.
    Decided to drop pan to see if there was filings or anything in pan. Fully expecting to find a bunch of stuff in old and pan, was surprised to find the pan and oil relatively clean.
    Kind of at a point of not knowing where to from here. Feeling I may have missed some tests I should have done prior to getting this far, but don't want to put it all back together, only to tear it down again for no good reason.
    Is there anything I should look for while I have the pan off? Would a stuck solenoid or pressure lose within the throttle body cause this issue?
    Thanks in advance. Going out to make some "uneducated" checks. :)

    • @haroldmanweiler4654
      @haroldmanweiler4654 7 лет назад

      An added note here: I just remembered, while adding fluid I noticed that when I went from "R" to "D" to ensure the torque converter was full of oil and engaging; it would lockup solid in "R" while "D" didn't to the same. I could hear the normal click of slack being taken up, when going into "R", but not "D".

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  7 лет назад

      Harold,
      if you have good reverse but no forward or very little forward, there is an issue with the forward. Either the drum is cracked or the clutches are worn and possible the seal for the forward piston is torn. If you have good reverse but bad forward, it cant be a pump, filter or pressure regulator problem. What happened to your trans is fairly common, i see alot of that. Gary

    • @haroldmanweiler4654
      @haroldmanweiler4654 7 лет назад

      Thanks Gary. I started chasing the P0720 code, Output Speed Sensor. Which on this model is located in the pumpkin of the axle. Believing that maybe it was causing the trans to go into limp mode, which may account for the sluggish forward. I am having a hard time convincing myself that it is a trans problem, without there being more debris in the pan.
      Going to put it all back together, tomorrow, and replace the OSS. If that works, it will be better than replacing the trans.
      Is there a good way to prove it is a trans problem and not a sensor issue? I have ohmed out the shift and TC solenoids and rigid wiring harness; they all checked good.
      Trying to find a definitive answer, without just replacing parts to replace parts.
      Thanks again.

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  7 лет назад

      Harold,
      If your working with a 4R70W trans, the output speed sensor is on the left side of the trans in the rear of the case. The sensor in the diff may be the rear ABS sensor. Look left side behind the linkage.

    • @haroldmanweiler4654
      @haroldmanweiler4654 7 лет назад

      Yes, you are correct; no surprise there. I checked the sensor and it read 415 ohms. Wires going to the PCM checked good, .5 ohms each. They are not shorted together. So, again..... where to now. Either the code was bad, PCM bad, or output shaft not turning correctly. Going back together with it all and see if the same code and symptoms return. May have to take it to a shop with the cool tools to have it tested. Any suggestions, would be appreciated. Thanks for all your help so far.

I'm under the impression the Overdrive Servo pin is starting to wear out. Kind like it's up shifting then back down after it warms up. You think the Sonnax Sure Cure Kit would fit it. As I know you can use an old shift roller to lock the band in place while you change it in the vehicle. Then install a Spiral ring to make sure the dreaded snap ring doesn't mess the transmission core up...
    And any other things to change while in there.
    Thank You

      Hello, usually when that pin bore wears, after driving it may neutralize in 4th, Question, did you happen to look at a scanner to make sure its not a lock-up issue? If it is in fact a shift to 4th then you would have to look at the band(direct clutch comes on in 3rd and stays on for 4th) I would probably change out the piston and use the sonnax pin(the one with the o-ring. I honestly never used a sure cure on a 4R70W yet.

    Hello Mr. Ferraro, Jorge here again. I'm personally cleaning the valve body valve by valve. I did run into a head scratcher and called it a day. On many online illustrations there is one valve that is numbered, (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16). 13 and 16 are lock clips. I seem to have forgotten where # 13 goes. I'm not sure if if goes shoved on top of the spring. Or if is is shoved in between # 12 and # 14? Thank you for your videos and thank you for responding.

    I does not move in manual low either. I'm sure the transmission is 4R75W. One more thing, I misspoke about the year...it's a 2000. Not much different, but it may help with diagnosis Doc Gary.

    • @GaryFerraro

      ok, so something with the foward drum, if this happened all of a sudden, possible something broke or stripped or the clutch pack is worndown or torn lip seal. Its a 4R70w if it has 14 pan bolts

    • @holgerjunge6172
      @holgerjunge6172 8 лет назад

      +Gary Ferraro yeah, I was worried it was something inside it. I don't know if this narrows it down a bit...I let it sit in drive for a few minutes and it did engage once an pull forward with no slipping. I then put it in reverse and back in drive and then nothing again. What a bummer.

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  8 лет назад

      May narrow it down just to the foward clutch drum, common for the clutches to wear out and have too much clearance in the clutch pack, as a result tearing the lip seal.

    Hi Gary, I have a 2004 Crown Vic police interceptor with a 4R70W. It has 153200 miles. It shifts fine and has only one problem. When the engine and trans are hot there is a 3-4 second engagement delay when shifting into drive from neutral or reverse. When it finally shifts into drive (after the delay), it engages fine with no slipping. So I think the forward clutch is OK. Once in drive, it shifts fine through all gears. There is never any delay shifting into reverse. It seems like something is sticking in the valve body. Any thoughts? Thanks.

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  6 лет назад

      Could be the solenoid regulator valve located next to the manual valve. If this valve sticks or drags in the bore it will cause the trans to neutralize on takeoff then be ok.

    Hello Gary, great video. I'm hoping you could give me some advise. I pulled and rebuilt my 5.4 2002 f150 engine. Now, after I put the engine back in, my transmission only goes forward when shifted in neutral and reverse and all drives. It did go in reverse a couple times as I backed it out of the shop, but now no reverse. I checked my linkage and seems good. I didn't adjust anything while I did the engine. The fluid level was good. I am going to pull out the valve body and repeat what I watched in your video. Would a valve being stuck cause this? The transmission did run fine before the overhaul. Thank you for your time. Dallas.

      I haven't overhauled the valve body yet. After I got my engine in and running, my parking brake wouldn't release easily. So I backed up a few feet and drove forward while trying to pop the parking brake free. After two times I only had forward in all positions. I manually shifted the tranny and the same result. This is my first time getting into a transmission, though I do have a good amount of mechanical background.

    What else could it be? 2003 F150. I have the 3-4 neutral condition. Firstly I can't check codes at this time. The C clip is fine. The E clip is fine. The valve moves freely. The fluid is about the worst I have seen for color and grime. 1-2, and 2-3 are solid and sure. O/D switched off keeps it from happening. 198k miles.

      Valvebody wise, double check the 3-4 shift valve, the foward clutch gets released in 4th and if that shift valve is hanging up, it could prevent the application of the foward clutch, if that is good, then there is an issue with the foward clutch itself. If you have good reverse, this tells me that the pump, pressure regulator valve and filter are ok.

    Gary Ferraro, (Or Anyone else who can help also?) I'm hoping you can help me with my 1998 Ford Explorer 5L AWD that has the 4r70w? I bought it a couple years back and had no problems with the transmission for the first year, in-fact, I would pull 2 quarts of fluid out the pipe and refill with 2 fresh Merc V's every 3 months. About 1 year ago I started getting vibrational semi-hard shifting into 4 gear (overdrive) -- a friend told me to try Lucas transmission fix, so I did and it helped for a few months and gradually came back -- now it seems to be migrating into 3rd gear especially if I'm going really easy on the gas during shifting -- I was going to just pull the pan and change the filter and pan fluid and hope for the best? Should I do what you did here or try my thing first? The truck has 200k on it but, the 302 gt is still super strong -- I love this truck ! It's an occasional problem shift -- it doesn't do it every-time.

      Sounds like you have a converter chatter. If caught in time changing the transmission fluid and filter may fix it, if not a new converter may have to be installed. when you say vibration, does it feel like your going over rough road or maybe railroad tracks?

      Sounds like a pressure loss, there are 2 elements that apply in reverse, the reverse input clutch and the low/reverse band. the low reverse band is applied in manual low, so if you have engine breaking in manual one then the band would be ok and the clutch is your problem, if no engine breaking problem with the band.

    • @jaybird19754
      @jaybird19754 7 лет назад

      I changed the fluid and filter hoping this would help fix it, but to now avail. What you suggested would require a teardown of the transmission right. I'm thinking it could be the reverse clutch, most cases the band would be broken and letting it go in reverse at all, so maybe it's the clutch. Thank you for the information you provided, hopefully I can get this fixed soon.

    What causes 3rd Gear shudder on these? I have owned 2 Mark VIII's and 2 Grand Marquis and all of them have Shudder issues mainly with 3rd gear. The Grand Marquis being the worst . I bought the one with 52,000 miles and when cold it had terrible shudder , but only when cold. At times it acted like, felt like and sounded like you were going over railroad tracks !! No kidding.. The Mark VIII's its minor but gets worse depending on the Hill and weight in the car. When fully loaded with adults, it can be bad climbing a hill !! I never have this problem with my older Fords, or any other cars for that matter. Only the Ford with this AEOD transmission... So.. What is the problem and the cure? A Ford guy down the street is telling me Valve Body... Is this true? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.. :)

      @GaryFerraro  7 лет назад

      What your feeling is a TCC shudder, this is very common on these units, first thing to do is service the trans, get new fluid and a filter in there. If it still continues, you may have to change the torque converter. Gary

    • @grabir01
      @grabir01 7 лет назад

      Wizard Transmissions Denver , Adam rebuilt it for me almost 3 years ago. Cost 3500. I bought the car used and it ate 2nd gear. Adam replaced the sprag clutch with a ratchet version and told me he would bring the rest of the transmission up current. Ever since it was finished, it had some shudder. Slight, but had some . The check engine light would come on during shudder. Light acceleration climbing a hill it would shudder and make the check engine light come on. Adam says it is a engine misfire. I told him the car never did that before. Had new wire set and plugs installed and not sure what else he did, but it improved but never totally went away. At least the check engine light does not come on any more. Each year I take the car back to him to keep his 3 year warranty valid, and each time the shudder is worse until he does his service. I am guessing he is putting in new fluid which almost eliminates the problem for a while. It concerns me that the torque converter is the problem. Is there a best torque converter? After market? would a shift kit installed in the valve body eliminate the problem?

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  7 лет назад

      The fact that he does a service and it gets better, says to me the converter is chattering. Not really anything special on these converters. Does he build them himself or does he buy them from his parts supplier? It sounds like the clutch in the converter at this point is no good.

    • @grabir01
      @grabir01 7 лет назад

      I will have to check and verify.. Thanks... Also.. Since the shudder only occurs at low rpm under light acceleration pulling a hill 3 and 4 th gears only, is there a way to change Shift points for 3 and 4th ? If I can get the shift points rpm higher, this should fix or mask the problem. It seems that 3 gear engagement rpm is super low just idling along it will shift into 3rd.

    • @alb12345672
      @alb12345672 7 лет назад

      What year is your Grand Marquis??? That is important to know. There were Flashes some years to change the lockup strategy. Make sure you touch the brake gently and confirm it is not drivability related. Touching the brake instantly unlocks the TCC. My 96 Explorer had a bad plug, it felt almost as bad as the TCC shudder(the problem happens mostly during that RPM range because it really loads the engine). There can be other base engines concerns as well, EGR, MAF ,etc. A good scan tool can rule it out. Your Marquis could have a leaking intake manifold, letting coolant into a plug well and misfiring. Just FYI.
      Beyond that Ford Transmissions are designed to so the torque converter clutch slips a few RPM(fuel economy, NVH reasons). A good scan tool can actually show you precisely how much. This also creates more heat and actually depletes the friction modifiers. It is critical that you have the correct fluid. Friction modifiers in the fluid allow the clutch to grab and release without sticking. No different than licking fingers to turn pages. Do a complete flush with a certified Mercon V fluid. You could probably drain the torque converter thru the bolt, if not pump it out thru the cooler 2 qts at a time. If this does not help, research a product called "Dr. Tranny Instant Shudder Fix." My 95 Tbird with 250K on the original trans has no shudder with this product, and I drive it very hard. Places told me the torque converter was trashed, but after a bottle (many many years ago, no problems since). Also, a Trans cooler is a very good idea, it was actually part of a Ford TSB from the mid 90s. They would install one if you lived in southern states. Remember the friction modifiers are destroyed by heat!

      Does the sonnax kit address the solenoid regulator valve? Wheels straight no problem? Any codes?

      Yes, the sonnax kit included a new regulator valve and OD servo pin with orings. Clutch does not slip when wheels are straight, only turned. Seems to only occur when vehicle is at temp; does not seem to occur when cold. No check engine lights.

      It says removing the accumulator springs and drilling holes in the seperator plate, This will shift very firm in my opinion.
      Have you looked into a Transgo shift kit?
