Here's a little anecdote about the alternate for this episode: You know Ed Toutant? Of course you do, he's one the winners of the show. What's lesser known other than that he appeared on the January 2000 premiere is that he was actually slated to appear in this episode. However he was pushed as an alternate, as the producers let Neil Sullivan (that guy you saw with Regis) to be in the Fastest Finger, because of the aforementioned that Neil was supposed to appear in an August 1999 episode. Had Neil Sullivan not ran for public office, Ed would've appeared in the November 1999 premiere, and who knows how he would've done. He might've bombed out early, or he could've won the million. Probably for the best we may not know.
But it did change quite a few things. On the old ATGS forums, I believe they were talking about the phone game having only qualifying 9 people as opposed to 10, to get Ed into the January 2000 premiere of the show. Another thing is that by the time this happened, they got rid of alternates at that point because no one wanted to be one. Hence why you see 9 person Fastest Fingers or a very rare 8 person fastest finger because instead getting someone to replace whoever dropped out, they'll leave it empty cause who would want to be one? Not me or you I hope.
