Ethel Waters, when she was singing with Diana Ross was like a sweet and affectionate Aunt. So dear, so gracious. And then Miss Waters gave such a tremendous and heart-wrenching performance of "Suppertime." She makes the old adage "They don't make them like that anymore" very true indeed.

Diana always sings well with others; trademark of a good singer. She blends so well with Ms. Waters’s nice voice for she is listening to her, before she responds. I even noticed that when she was humming with her mouth open, her volume got louder & Ms. Waters gently tap her arm. Diana quickly adjusts & hums with a closed mouth & lowers her voice. That’s harmony, reverence, & control. Whoever she sings with, the song & performance is usu. a hit for she isn’t trying to compete vs. complement.

Ah to have seen the great Ethel Waters live on stage in the twenties and thirties at the height of her career. Even here in her golden years with dimming voice she is a a dramatic vessel nonpareil.

Any other Black R&B singers would have tried to out-sing and yell over Ms. Waters. Whomever she sings with, the song & performance is usually a hit for she isn’t trying to compete, but. complement them. The ol' lady appreciated that at the end too.

Diana Ross was a devotee and student of the great African-American artists from her childhood on. She studied what they did and how they did it, she learned from and she gained an invaluable knowledge of them and their art. When she was filming "Lady Sings the Blues" she said if she died it wouldn't be her own life which passed before her eyes but Billie Holiday's.

Thank You So Much for posting this. Listening to Ms Waters sing Berlin's 'Suppertime' was a great risk, when it was initially performed and cut out of every theatre south of Baltimore. Most unfortunately, sadly...the song is as apropos today as it was when it was written. People still being lynched/murdered for being simply who they are and still wive's, mother's, parents, children, singing the same sentiments sung here in this song and feeling the same grief. So much for social progress in USA!

But she did, when she was on Broadway. Hollywood would have been impossible at the time, and is still difficult, but Broadway embraced her, especially (and you can see the film with her in it, playing the same role), in "A Member of the Wedding", with Julie Harris. When she opens those arms and embraces Harris, you can just feel the love. Also, on film, 'Cabin in the Sky' which she did with Lena Horne as the 'bad girl' making famous the classic, 'Taking a Chance on Love.' She made a difference.

I meant crazy as in fox. Your grandmother's account matches exactly what I have read.
Legendary George Wein ( founder of Newport Jazz & Folk Fests) wrote about her awful attitude; yet he wanted the best opportunies for her in her later years because he had such huge respect for her talent. He thinks her legacy is totally underated because of all the folks she p'd off. Listen to her duet w. DR (without watchin) and her musical lines are killer even if the voice is weakened.

This is so appropriate... its not a secret now that Ethel Waters was a lesbian... which u unfortunately had to keep secret way back then. Both have very fine controlled singing voices
