    Had to replace my starter today… To make things easier for the “drive-way mechanic”:with just a jack: put the body as high as you can on jack stands and make sure that the wheels and axel are hanging free off the ground..This gives you much more space to access the starter! Absolute pain in the a.. to wiggle it out when the wheels touch the ground as the upper control arm is in the way. DON’T remove the arm! You will need to realign the axel if you do that! Use a few ratchet extensions and a joint socket to loosen the 15 mm screws, they are a pain to reach otherwise. After that, easy peasy, just loosen the power cable and connector and slide the starter forward and it drops right out.. Get your nose dirty and good luck!

    First and foremost thank you for taking the time and putting aside the time and effort in making your informational videos. This happens to be the second time I was able to address an issue with my vehicle/jeep and the way you broke down every stage to diagnose the issue. So thank you and yes the troubleshooting I did worked on my vehicle and I was able to go from the ignition to relay from relay to starter. By bypassing the relay and direct/connect 30/85 I was able to pinpoint where I had the problem and handle it smoothly. Have a blessed day and thank you. Sincerely, Octabio

    Your tip that it is possible by just moving the brake hose is helpful. I was under it last night wondering how it was coming out without dropping the exhaust, thanks for that info. Jumping the relay with key in run position and it not working (proving it is a bad starter) could be clearer, but thanks for sharing.

I tested the starter with the wire and it started when the two wires were together, but when i tried to start the jeep inside with the key it wouldn't start.. Do you think my best bet would be to change the neutral safety switch? Appreciate your help!

      Just put a screwdriver on the terminals on the starter and if it starts into the mistral safety switch. If not it’s a bad starter

    I see this is an old post. I was wondering how you ruled out the neutral safety switch as part of the problem.Sorry if I missed this detail in the video. Also if you remove the control arm makes it easier to remove starter. Sometimes the control arm bolts are not easy to get off either.

    Ok I have a couple questions for anyone if the relay was bad would the best way to check it be a normal fuse checker or is there another way and the other question is it if it doesn’t start it’s the starter or if it does start sorry I got a little confused there I’m looking at a 2002 jeep grand Cherokee on Facebook messenger and they said they think it might be the starter but they aren’t sure?

      I got under my Jeep today and that’s all I heard;
      just one big click from the solenoid. Luckily, when I bought my GC from a private owner they included a few spare parts, the starter being one of them.
      Now I’m wondering if they didn’t swap it because they concluded it was the neutral safety switch in the tranny?
      I’ll bypass the relay and go from there I suppose. Hopefully my optimism works magic. Thanks again for the video OP. Stay humble brotha ✌️

    Thanks for the video .. it was very helpful. My Jeep starts fine using your bypass of the relay trick. I’m having the same issue u we’re having because mine is intermittent as well. I may just carry two wires around for the time being whenever I need to drive my Jeep. I’ve dropped the valve body in the past because I had to change the solenoid assembly in the transmission. I hope I don’t have to do that again. I’m going to try messing with the shifter as well. Do u think shifting the transmission in to 4 low could be related? We just had a huge snow storm in Colorado and I had to use 4 low a few times.

    So i did this wire diagnostic test and i touched them together about 5 times and i got nothing but a click . I touch them together a 6th time and the starter fired up . Does this sound like a starter issue ? O'reilleys said supposedly my starter is good

    • @AmericanMadeClassics
      @AmericanMadeClassics  Год назад +1

      This sounds like a classic starter solenoid issue, which is what my problem was with mine. The solenoids go “flakey” or “intermittent.” Very common issue with a solenoid. Getting a new starter will solve your problem, as the solenoid is attached to the starter as a unit.

  • @SIRAJ-1618

    So I did you mentioned in this video but nothing happens. Does that mean it’s a bad starter? When I connected the wire it didn’t start.

    • @AmericanMadeClassics
      @AmericanMadeClassics  4 года назад

      If you can hear the relay “energize” (a click sound), then that means the power is going through the relay to the starter...and therefore the starter should work. If you don’t hear the relay click, then the relay is at fault or you did not put the wires in the correct pins.

    • @SIRAJ-1618
      @SIRAJ-1618 4 года назад

      American Made Classics once I put the wires in there and connected the other end .. after the spark you could tell the power is going through. There were clicking sound coming as well but the car did not start. Does that mean I need to replace the starter?

  • @douglaschonto9845
    @douglaschonto9845 Год назад

    At some point in your video, you crank it by touching those two wires together, something you’re calling ‘bypass.’ From that point how do you switch off engine; with the key or you have to re-touch the wires again..?
    Like when you start the engine with the key, you can always switch it off again with the key. But when you start engine with those two bypass wires, how do you turn the engine off???

    • @Mark-wz1yt
      @Mark-wz1yt Год назад +2

      It'd be the same way you normally shut it off. The 2 wires are just bypassing the neutral safety switch, starter relay, pcm, etc. It's only telling the starter solenoid to give the starter the beans while the wires are touching. If the key isn't in or is on off position then the 2 wires will only crank the vehicle and it won't start since the ignition/fuel pump won't be on. If the key's in the run position and you touch the 2 wires together, it can start and you'd just turn the key off to stop it afterwards.

    • @AmericanMadeClassics
      @AmericanMadeClassics  2 года назад +3

      You have a valid argument, but let me elaborate. Because it was the Solenoid that was bad in my situation. Technically, there are actually Two "Relays" in this circuit. The Relay in the Power Distribution Center (Fuse Box), and the Solenoid on the Starter (Which is essentially an oversized Relay). In my situation, the Solenoid was acting Intermittent...which is VERY common amongst Starter Problems in general. So to your argument that I may have only needed to replace the Relay is indeed Valid when troubleshooting...BUT, when Starter Solenoids are on the way out, they usually are "Flakey" or Intermittent and work "Some of the Time." The new Starter (which includes a brand new Solenoid attached to it) solved my issue...and has been working 100% correctly in the 2 years since I replaced it and made this Video.

      Sounds like your Positive battery terminal isn’t tight enough. Your cables could also be in rough shape as well, with enough resistance to not allow the proper current through them anymore. I would start over from scratch with brand new cables. You can go to the battery section at any auto parts store and buy premade lengths of cables. You would need a cable that goes from the battery to the Power Distribution Center (PDC), and then a cable from the PDC to the Starter, re-use the stock alternator cable that normally attaches to the PDC. So instead of 2 cables coming out of the positive battery post, the 2 cables would come out of the PDC instead. And of course get a new negative cable as well. I did this exact same repair on my Dad’s GC a couple months ago. Solved ALL starting issues for him. If you’re not comfortable doing the cable repair, a trusty mechanic should be able to assist. Hope this helps
