- In search of a way to get more people into outdoor swimming, I gathered a few friends to try out the Finnish sauna tradition of steam, cool, repeat at The Saltwater Sauna on Sandbanks Beach. Some are outdoor swimmers, some aren't but we took to it with gusto! We sizzled, chatted, glowed and swam in the sea. What a fantastic experience! #bluemind #wellbeing #outdoorswimming
I booked a 65-minute session www.thesaltwat... so we could have a chance to relax and get the whole experience. Thank you to Kristy, Cloe, Beth and Ade for joining me.

See you in the water soon.
Looks like great craic!
There's nothing better than a sauna with direct access to the sea or a lake. I've been to saunas frequently since my childhood and I've always loved getting really hot and then walk out into the cold air, breathe and then cool down with cold water or snow. But the one time I had the opportunity to cool down by sea swimming was the best by far. And that is a lovely little sauna with a superb view through the window: it would look like a painting, if people weren't moving.
What struck me as odd though, is that you were all wearing swim wear in the sauna. Where I'm from you go in naked or wrapped in a towel (hamam towels are probably best). The heat in the sauna ruins the fabric of swim suits in the long run. You should also be careful with watches for the same reason.
The rules on this sauna are that swimwear is required. That os fairly normal in the UK. I can see that the heat would affect the fabric and watches too. My gopro certainly didn't like it in there - it overheated and switched off, came back to life after cooling off though! I really enjoyed hte experience and I'll be looking out for other opportunities in the future.
@@EverydayAthleteRach Yes, go for it. You really feel so much better all round, if go regularly. I really need to start doing that again.
This looks like you all had so much fun 😀 I look forward to smimming there one day.
Bright as a button! Love it. Id love to try this next time im in a cold climate.
You should! It was fantastic!
I was given a voucher for this for Christmas. I'm going to wait for warmer water just in case.
That present-giver must really love you. It's a super experience!
@@EverydayAthleteRach My daughter gave it to me, and we both went on the 11th of may. Your're 100% right, it is a fantastic experience, and we both felt uplifted!
I have even given a voucher to another member of my family, so I have an excuse to go again.
@@Split10uk ah! That’s the way to do it!
Bright as a button--fantastic!
As always Rachel you are an inspiration - five of us are off to Lyme Regis for a similar experience - I noticed there is also a beach sauna in Oxwich on The Gower Peninsula - a Blue Tonic Special!
Hi Julia, I spotted there's one at Lyme. Rather fancy a trip there sometime. Have a super time!
That looked fun and it was fascinating to see your faces and also your post script at the end. I can't think of anywhere near Leicester which offers an outdoor sauna (no sea here either!!!)
You might find something on here www.wildsaunas.info/
I think Castle Ashby might be building one 🤞
Well done! Really enjoyed that!
Morning Rachel. What a great experience. I've been using a sauna at least 5 days a week for years and I've never felt better. Great content.
If I lived near one like this, I'd do similar!
Wow! That looked amazing and just up the road from me- didn’t know it was there!! Loved the view from the sauna window. Great video 👍
It’s a cracker of a place. You should check it out!
That coastal area looks very beautiful ❤️❤️❤️! Great love and respect from a solo mountain hiker friend from the Hindu Kush Mountains Lower Chitral District of Pakistan!
Hey Sana ur Rehman Shahmir great to hear from you, I hope the weather is treating you well on you hikes!
There is one at Studland too
What is it called? Might make a habit of it!
Hi Rachel how are you? That looks like fun and a good laugh. Were you all totally barefoot due to it being a 'regular' beach or because with booties you wouldn't have felt the full effects of sauna than beach? It's a shame really Ade's shorts matched one of the other lady's cossies as I loved how you were otherwise all wearing a different colour cossie. Symbolic to me of how the best teams/clubs are those where everyone is their own individual with a common interest or aim! You all seem so close knit which warmed my heart this Vs Day ♥️
You had to be barefoot inside the sauna and there was a bucket to was off the sand so barefoot seemed to make sense. They are my good friends it was great fun!
🔥 🥶 🥵 🥶 🔥 🥶
Exactly!
Ooh, love it. I was thinking the sauna heat would make the sea mega cold (I do sea swim all year round) but it doesn't seem like it. I'm close by so might have to try it.
Give it a go. It was a fantastic experience and feeling!
It looks amazing although it might be nicer closer to the sea? The window is an added bonus and it doesn’t seem that expensive? I’m assuming it was £75 between you all and not each? 😂
It was £75 total to hire it for 65 minutes and up to 8 people can go in.
@@EverydayAthleteRach that’s pretty good value for the experience 👍
WoW… this looks like such a treat!! I’ve done saunas before, but they usually leave me feeling dizzy and a bit drained. I think the fluctuating temperatures of 🔥& 🧊 would feel amazing. I also thought that the view of the beach from inside the sauna was very aesthetically pleasing, and I think it would make me feel quite relaxed. This would definitely be something I would frequently do with my friends if I had the opportunity to do so. Thanks for sharing this great experience with us Rachel. Ⓜary❄
I think we are all agreed that we'd like to do it again. In fact, over the next few weeks I'm travelling a lot for work, so I'm going to see if I can uncover a few more wild saunas with swim spots 🌶🍙🏊
@@EverydayAthleteRach Safe travels to you, Rachel, and may you find more wild saunas along the way. Ⓜary🔥🧊
That's amazing, thanks for putting this up, this is something I've been wanting to do for ever now I know where I can go! If you read what doesn't kill you, or breath by James nester they will tell you all about how the exchange helps and also the 2 min rule in cold water and how after that the endorphins kick in and its not so hard... love this 🥶💙💙👍👍🙏🙏
Exchange = exhale 😆
I’ll check those out. I’ve read Chill the cold water swim cure by Mark Harper which is what peaked my interest. Go give it a go!
Wow! That was fantastic!! Where is this Rachel? I have done saunas and ice cold plunge pools in a spa before but not a plunge in the sea! You looked rejuvenated on Monday morning!!
It was brilliant! A great activity with friends too. It was The Saltwater Sauna in Sandbanks, Poole.
Random Q - do you ever bump into Harry and Sandra (Redknapp) down there in your travels?
No, but I do know which house is their’s! Happy Valentines Day Dave 😀
How many times did you heat up and then dip in the sea? And how long was did the whole experience last?
We had the 65 min session. We heated up and dunked 4 times I think.
@@EverydayAthleteRach - oh perfect! I’d love to do that, I’m sure it’s got heaps of health benefits!
