Hats are my passion. Never leave home without one. When people do remark upon them, they usually say how much they like them, but do not have the courage to wear one themselves. The trick is to put it on your head, stand up straight, and purposely stride ahead. This technique works well with any head dress. Be it a trilby, fedora or 14 inch basque beret. A fine video Ash.
My grandfather wore trilby's and when he passed away I inherited his, ive been wearing them basically everyday for the last few years and it's a great joy as it is a hat that fits even informal outfits and just helps me to present and express myself through my style. I have gotten many compliments from people around me and it surprises me since I am 16, that quite many friends and classmates appreciate hats so I definitely agree that the trilby has a place in the modern era of styles.
I’ve got 3 trilbys and I think they are just great, pity more men don’t wear them, much more stylish than a baseball cap especially when you dress up a bit. Great video Ash
My mother is Welsh, and she had a great uncle in the Valleys that was an eccentric. He'd announce his presence by throwing his hat through the doorway of the house and he used to say he knew he was welcome if it wasn't thrown back out at him. I always pictured that hat as a trilby in my mind's eye, though it was probably a flat cap
I prefer a hat with a wider brim so I wear fedoras mostly and of course my Akubra in high summer. I do have a black Christie's trilby for formal occasions. I guess my current winter headwear is eccentric, I am wearing a Swedish military ski cap, but it is very warm and practical in this weather as it has pull down ear flaps. Nobody ever comments on it, they are too interested in my walking cane with it's deer antlers.
I can see why a trilby would be a good hat for a modestly sized individual, but I prefer a Fedora. I like the larger brim as it keeps the sun out of my eyes, but to each his own! Thank you for posting this!
I dropped on a brown Lincoln Bennett trilby last year for£24 on ebay. I was lucky, it was in excellent condition and fits perfectly. I managed to date it to the mid sixties by the sales ticket from a mens wear shop in Bexleyheath.
I always wear a trilby in winter, paired with a nice leather jacket. People stop and compliment where ever I go. I reserve the more outlandish styles for Camden town where they are nothing out of the ordinary. .
With a Barbour jacket a wonderful hat to accompany it is the Barbour waxed hat. It is a fadora design in the same color as the jacket with a plaid liner that also matches. I have one and love it.
My favourite hat is my khaki military fedora, similar or probably the same as the troops at Galipoli. It's about 100 yrs old, but still looks and feels great. Sadly, whilst driving with it on around 40 yrs ago, it flew off, got run-over by a lorry, and the original head-ribbon was ruined. Other than that, perfect. Only thing, as an archaeologist, people always bring up the "Indiana Jones" comparison etc. Just like to say, have owned this hat for over 45 yrs, so well before bloody Indiana Jones (he obviously copied me!). My second fave is a 1950's beaver fur trilby which i got online from an antique store in Chicago. This is my go-to standard wear. Toodle pip!
Regarding cold ears: I bought earwarmers from Ali Express for € 5. One in brown herringbone and one in grey herringbone. Young guys complimented me on my stylish "headphones" 😂
Knit caps, aka "Watchman" caps, add some rugged, nautical dash, --but it's lost when people in the U.S. call them "beanies." ;-) Thanks Ash; and good job underlining the difference between the trilby and fedora!
I've bought hats that look good in the mirror but when I see pictures of myself... not so much. I think the key when hat shopping is to have someone with you whose opinion you can count on, preferably of the opposite sex, with the inducement of a good lunch or dinner afterward.
I bit the bullet last year and bought a Trilby - and now I have 2 ! (my first was black but I find it a bit stark & formal - the second one is a vintage German sage green, and I am keeping lookout for a brownish one) The green one has seen a lot of use this winter, once I overcame any self-consciousness. Sadly, where I live I'm more likely to see people in slippers & pyjamas than I am a man wearing a (proper) hat.
Excellent video! I have invested in a couple wool fedora hats and I have enjoyed wearing them in the colder weather. I think I will now invest in a trilby as you make excellent points in regards to the trilby’s acceptance in the modern era.
Have you ever considered a "hat etiquette" guide? As you probably know there is much more to wearing a hat than just putting it on your head. When to don a hat, to doff a hat, and to tip one. What to do when sporting one in front of a lady you know or just passing a lady in the street. Then there is the possible confusion of what building`s you can wear one in, and what ones where you should remove it. We then need to consider the correct way to remove a hat and how to hold it. All these need to be borne in mind to avoid possible embarrassment. Maybe this is one of the reasons hats have fallen out of favour over the years, and that life has become to hectic to worry about such things. Personally I prefer a Fedora as a Trilby reminds me of Arthur Daley or Mickey Pearce from Fools and Horses.
Thanks I been wondering which hat should I use the most and why, this advice helps. I can see each hat has its place, time and occassion however the Trilby is the main dress hat for the gentleman as you explained
I have the family copy of George De Maurier's Trilby, which I have read through twice, struggling with the French excerpts, of course. Well worth a read, depicting 1850s Paris couture.
I have all hats except a top hat. Depending on the situation and outfit I chose my hat accordingly. But yes I find myself mostly wearing a trilby beside a flat cap of course.
I regularly wear a trilby for function, as it keeps my head warm and if it should start to drizzle, dry. One can feel a bit self-conscious when adding something new to one’s style, but it quickly wears off as you acquire confidence and appreciate the practical benefits. Great video and discussion Ash.
Well said, Sir. The Trilby is perfect. Aside from being Bond's titfer of choice, I also associate it with jazz musicians; the Blues Brothers and with the ska scene: Suggs. Jerry Dammers and Pauline Black MBE always looked sharp as a needle in their trilbies. I always keep at least one of them in my collection.
I started wearing a trilby recently made of a stiff straw in three different colors. I wear it with a light patterned t-shirt, straight cut jeans, necklace, and a nice watch. I’ve gotten more compliments on my wardrobe now than any other time in my life. I used to wear baseball caps all the time, and decided to try the trilby. Pretty much going to continue this look from this point on.
Love the video and I own many hats I wanted to also comment on your suit in this video. I love the color and style of the plaid suit. What is the exact colors of your suit ? Color of your necktie? And pocket square? Thank you for your answers Christopher Reed Akron Ohio USA
I have several hats, but only one that might be considered a trilby, as I am just not sure what differentiates a trilby from a fedora as far as crown height and brim length (now there is a topic). This hat I have had for close to twenty years and was bought to go with a trench coat I bought at the same time.
Thanks for the review. I've been debating getting a hat, but I wasn't sure where to start. I do love fedoras though. Maybe I'll invest in both, and see which one I can pull off.
I would love to see a walking tour of your town, especially the town centre and high street. I own many Tilley hats but they are not dressy. Currently playing with a green wool hat between a Trilby and Fedora as it has a wide brim but rolled up edge what can be put down in the front. Interesting that you have a paper hat; I picked one up from the dollar store but put it aside for a while so it doesn't shought dollar store, but it is rather nice for paper as it looks more like a straw weave.
I have 3 Tilly hats and love them for outdoor activity (essential for a man with no hair on the head). I usually opt for a paper material hat for the summer months in a classic fedora/trilby style/ Hard to beat for the price.
Just added a beautiful dark gray vintage trilby and it looks identical to pictures of Frank Sinatra in the early 60s (if a bit more rumpled 😂) and while I do actually prefer larger fedoras there is something very pleasant about occasionally having a more understated hat on. The only downside to me is that you sacrifice sun protection because of the narrowness of the brim.
Hi Ash, another great post and I really appreciate for content. In general I’m sporting several different hats but Trilby is one of my favourites……cheers and best regards from Sweden
I’ve always liked Trilby’s but never felt able to pull off the look. They are the type of headwear that requires you to pair it with a suit. Edit: You look just like your dad!
I never realized that "follicle challenged" men had that problem in the rain. I can imagine that that's a very irritating feeling. I would definitely wear some form of head wear in such weather.
Isn't the only difference between the trilby and fedora is around the brim, being longer and able to be snapped? I have always found the trilby brim being a little short for the size of my head.
Same here, I am 6.3 ft (1.92 metres) and my headsize is 7 3/8 (60) and I find the Fedora more becoming for someone my size. The Trilby alway seems too small.
Likewise, I find the wider brim of the fedora more practical, although recently I stopped needing to travel so far for work so use my bicycle much more - fedora doesn't go well on a bike. Sadly my fedora went missing some time ago and since I've not been cutting about town quite so much since covid started, I've not yet replaced it.
Unfortunately, I live in a small farming village in the middle of Michigan, USA. The only hats seen here are the baseball hats that all farmers wear and the stocking hat for the bitter cold and snow of winter. I am the only person who actually wears a flat cap and that happens when wearing my Barbour Beaufort. Don't know what would happen if I wore a Trilby in such a situation as a village board meeting.
Yet another brilliant and very informative video, sir. Many thanks for that! Your videos do have an impact on my live. Especially the video "Military Influence in Men's Style" struck a particular chord !!! Sadly in my country (Belgium) absolutely nobody wears a hat. The ones who do are considered eccentric. Luckily I am off that age that I don't care anymore what others think ("5 Positives to the Ageing Process for Chaps"). All time favorite books? Reading list for 2022? And what about a little competition? First price ... a lunch/dinner at the shack? Whith your famous chicken soup? 🙂
I enjoy wearing both Trilby and Fedora. Not a hard fast rule only what my tendencies are to do I wear Fedora the way Indiana Jones popularized with leather bomber jackets or Denim jackets or sport coats. As a side note I also make use of flat caps in some instances. For dresser looks like full suit or blazers I ware the Trilby. Frank Sinatra certainly made iconic use of trilby's with suits and blazers. Again these are tendencies. I do enjoy mixing it up time to time.
Thank you for putting together this video on the trilby hat. I have three myself. One for summer and two for fall and winter. Can you suggest a trilby material that is more rain resistant without feeling plastic?
I generally opt for felt in the trilby for most occasions and even a bit of rain is OK. Although, perhaps a hide option may be better for sustained rainfall.
Rabbit hair hats are not always bad for the rabbit! I have a pet rabbit bred to have long hair, so I started looking at hats to find something to do with the extra hair I take off.
Excuse me, sir, I have a supposedly woolen trilby hat that I have been gifted today and it has a small stain of wax on it. Are you equipped with any knowledge of how could I carefully remove a wax stain?
Being an above average height fellow at 6ft5, the trilby for me looks like a boys hat. I very much prefer the fedora in my case cause of my stature it works better for me. Just like a 40mm watch. A 36mm looks too small on my wrist
I have to agree, when one has such commanding height (what a great privilege by the way!), you do have to scale up your accessories to match your stature. I think a fedora is a great hat for such a situation!
The Trilby is the quintessential british hat and my favourite. Maybe you can enlighten the audience why the Trilby is usually worn a number too small ?! I have to disagree on the woolen cap ! The imagery connected with it, is that of the Commando. I prefer the classic, old school, cap comforter in khaki wool. You wouldn´t want to have a stroll on St.James´ Street in it, sure enough, but for a walk in the woods, daily chores, hunting (when not being part of a hunting party), stylish enough.
I think all men today should aspire to start dressing like how men back in the 1920s used to. Even the children back then had more class and style than what we have today. At some point you got to hang up the ballcap - you're not 12 any more.
Uh oh someone better tell my Grandfather he is now 12 apparently, since ballcaps are the only hat he wears. Hes got a rack full of them in their homes entryway. Probably enough to wear a different one everyday of the month.

Greetings from Boston! Absolutely we do wear Trilby and Fedoras here!
In the colder months I wear a cossack artic fox fur hat does the job and is tried and tested against the elements
Tweed trilby is often overlooked as an easy to wear option.
I prefer a Fedora myself with a English 50's style flat cap for ease of use
After your list of menswear items last year I went out and grabbed a trilby, and now it's part of me.
My mother is Welsh, and she had a great uncle in the Valleys that was an eccentric. I completely agree Ash, I own 4, 2 for winter and 2 for summer. A good point about a Barbour style coat though it just doesn’t work
Great content! Im a hat person don't leave home without one, from pork pie to cowboy hat, I much prefer fur felt hats than wool. Thanks for the video!
